The sheathing tape is really only meant to seal air gaps in a static (non-moving) environment protected under house siding. Gorilla Tape is the way to go if you’re making something that will experience dynamic forces, such as a stuff sack. I know I’m late to the party, but this is excellent. Thank you!!

Thanks for this info! I'm just getting ready to make a Tyvek bivy, but I'll now be making some bags and pack liners too.

Have you considered going over the seams with a rubber roller? Some adhesives require a lot of force + time to properly whet onto the surface. Also, at 8:27, you don't need to cut the side---just fold it all the way around. Last point: this is some heavy ass construction. For light and ultralight applications, stitching might be better. More involved process than using tape, though. Nice backpack, too. Thanks for sharing.

The roller is a good idea, but the tape is fairly sticky when it comes in contact with the tyvek. For weight i wish i could use a lighter tape though. Stitching is better, but more work. In the past i've made a kite and backpack with tyvek - combination of sewing and packaging tape. Cool. I am thinking of making a bivy bag as part of a bedroll since Tyvek is breathable.

I'd suggest washing the tyvek in a washing machine first (without soap). It won't lose its water resistance or strength, but it will no longer be really loud and crinkly. It'll be soft and cottony. You can also make tarps and tents and backpacks out of it!

I've heard about washing it. Seems like a good idea. And i did make a backpack out of Tyvek back in 2012: davewirth.blogspot.com/2012/12/tyvek-backpack.html

Very helpful information! For a good while I have been thinking that tyvek would make an excellent material for a backpacking tent, waterproof, breathable, lightweight. I understand that it is noisy but have heard if you launder it a few times it softens it and makes it less crinkly and quieter. Have you ever tried to make one?

Made a backpack. Still have it. Works great. Although i used a different type of tyvek, more of a softer cloth, not as noisy as the traditional plastic stuff: davewirth.blogspot.com/2012/12/tyvek-backpack.html

they make those hazmat suits out of it and they're no louder than a tent

Any updates? I'm here looking for ways to use up some offcuts I'm anticipating. I have a DD aframe mesh tent white I want to add some kind of tarp/tent out of ultralight tyvek... it's for a hiking/backpacking tent. So any ideas you may have would be welcome.

Ain't tyvek great? Made alot of stuff sacks with it over the years, never thought about doing it with duct tape. Just a suggestion. If you don't have one already, pick up a old sewing machine and try making one with that. It'll give you more options (ie: tool rolls) They can be had for 0 to $50 for an old cast iron Singer. Dan

But wouldn’t you still need to tape the stitching since the tyvek has been perforated?

Thank you for this video. I have a question : I am wondering if this Tyvek you picked is good if I print an image on it.

If you go to Tyvek website you will fine information on printing on tyvek.

Shouldn’t waterproof Tyvek logo go on outside of bag?
@DaveWirth3 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but i'm not sure if it matters? I just know that tyvek is not necessarily waterproof, but breathable. (letting moisture on the wood side of the house outward)

think a person could cover their ultalight wings with tyvek like the Aerolite 103

I have no idea about air plane wings. So i don't want to even say Maybe. This reminds me of a Car Talk episode where a guy didn't want to buy an expensive airplane engine, so he called the guys to see if a Volvo engine was reliable to use insted. www.npr.org/2022/08/01/1115013366/-2262-really-low-cost-air-travel
