How to make a V-Tail for RC Planes (experimental Airlines Style)
I hoped you learned and made my version of a V-Tail for your EA Style Planes for FPV or regular flying. I guess the technique will also work well with hotwire-cut fuselages or EPP Builds.
Stay tuned for more to come!

*NOTE* Apologies for not mentioning a different ''mark to mark'' measurement for your V-Tail template at 12:15 The basic math for calculating the measurement for your cut: sin(45) * fuselage width in inches Or you could calculate: 0.707 * fuselage width in inches For a 3'' fuselage width, your measurement will be: sin(45) * 3 = 2.121'' For a 2.5'' fuselage width, your measurement will be: (sin45) * 2.5 = 1.767'' For a 2'' fuselage width, your measurement will be: sin(45) * 2 = 1.414''

Nathan, this was a great great video! I've been flying rc planes for about 12 years and I've never built or flown a v tail plane. I think it's about time I try it. I really like the look of your yellow and black v tail pusher plane. I'm going to follow your videos and I'm going to build one. Thanks for these awesome videos!!!!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. The cost of foam planes used to be a cheaper alternative to balsa, now even it is getting up there in price. My next FPV airframe will be made using your foam board techniques.

Fantastic models, they look great and they look like they fly great, going to build one for myself. Generally how far back are the wings located from the nose of the fuselage and what is the basic length of the fuselage. Great Job, you've got inspired. Keep Going.
@AeroStuffFPV

Thanks! The wings are located at the CoG (Center of Gravity). If all the components are loaded in the fuselage and I balance it on my hand, I’ll eventually find a balancing point somewhere on the fuselage. That is where I’ll mount my wing. (Basic fuselage length is 950mm to 1100mm)

I'm designing a 1600mm wing span V tail RC plane and I also concluded that the length of the stabilizer should be around 300mm based on some basic wind tunnel testing I performed at home. Interesting stuff mate.

@@AeroStuffFPV I made a some scale models with a rough CG where the actual plane would have it. I then pinned the models from the 1/4 chord line (allowing free pitch and yaw rotation). Then I observed the stability in the wind tunnel (air speed of 10 to 15 m/s). A large tail would be too heavy and provide too much downward force making flight unstable. A small tail would not provide enough correcting force and the model would pitch down. I have a video of this experiment, I'll post it on my YT channel later (I don't have any videos on YT yet).

@@AeroStuffFPV I must add, I'm not an expert, my wind tunnel is very basic (home made) but it allows me to do some fun experiments. Great videos mate. Cheers from Australia.

Thanks so much for the great upload. It's a very informative and well made video! I'm not sure I understand the maths in your comment, is that to determine 110° angle of the v-tail? Do you have a link to v-tail aerodynamics or general 'rules of thumb?' Thanks again - keep them coming! :)
@AeroStuffFPV
@AeroStuffFPV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The math (sin45) is used to determine the 45° angle per side (all adding up to a 90° diagonally). I don’t use any complicated maths to make the V-Tails. It’s just the template technique, reïnforcement and servo (ruddervators) imput

Hi. Really nice plane and instruction! I would like to build one but got some question. What is the distance between main wing LE to v-tail LE?
@AeroStuffFPV
@AeroStuffFPV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks! It was determined by the CG. (I loaded up everything on the plane before mounting the wing-joining-rods and found the CG at 50% of the fuselage tube (1m fuselage length) I dont have the black-red-white model anymore, but now you know how I did it.

Hi AeroSTUFF FPV - ingenious idea your construction ! I'm trying to build a replica - but you never (?) show how you build the rudders (on the wings or on the V-tail) in detail ... Do you cut before or after ? Do you cut halfway into the foam ? Do you glue afterwards with tape ? => Could you give a reference to one of your videos (or even create a small sequence) ? THANKS !
@michaelwhinnery164

Nicely Done, You are a skilled builder and I love this design, I think I'm gonna build one.. only smaller. One question though. Why not cut halfway through the foamboard and then crush / open it like the main wing wing with the ruler corner and fold it to the inside instead of the outside then there won't be a gap that needs filling I'm thinking way less finger burns with that hot glue.

Thanks for the fantastic video, I have a question please. in the video, u said showed on the screen for a 71" wingspan ---> use 33.75cm V-Tail but when u build ur V-Tail the wingspan was 63" and u did the V-Tail 35 cm??? is not the ratio should increase with the wingspan so how the V-Tail of 71" is shorter than V-tail for 63". thanks
@AeroStuffFPV
@AeroStuffFPV 2 жыл бұрын
It is all recommended (Minimal V-Tail to Wing ratio)
@AeroStuffFPV
@AeroStuffFPV 2 жыл бұрын
If your V-Tail ratio is shorter than the recommended, you could add additional vertical stabilizers between the V-Tail and wing. This compensates the yaw stability

Per 0.2m increase in total wingspan, you’ll increase 3.75cm of the V-Tail (per side) - I mentioned it at the beginning of the video as well.
