LEGO has the “whip antenna” in translucent clear plastic in 3mm that you could use as a replacement for the hinge. The tops are even rounded like the original hinges. This way you wouldn’t need to sand and the hinges would remain clear! Awesome job!

@briansmith59214 жыл бұрын
While I liked the solution in this video, there are several other ways this canopy could be made and tinted. Polycarbonate is a thermo plastic and can be bent or vacuum formed after being heated up. A possible solution to make a canopy out of a single piece of plastic (polycarbonate or acrylic) would be to use a hot wire where you need to make bends. There is plenty of information online on how you can DIY this type of solution. There are also plenty of DIY solutions about how to create a small vacuum forming rig using common household items such as a shop vacuum, household oven, and plywood (or even a heat gun for small parts). You would need to make a form to pull the plastic over. As far as tint goes, Tamiya makes a polycarbonate paint called Smoke which can be used to "tint" plastic. It is Tamiya PS-31. You can find plenty of examples of how this paint looks if you search online for tinted R/C vehicle windows. The only issue with this paint is you must use very light coats. Another solution for tinting polycarbonate plastic is using fabric eyes such as RIT. Again there are plenty of examples online of this process. Most supermarkets in the U.S. sell RIT dye and all you need is to mix it in a pot of warm water. A short bath in a black dye and water solution should be enough for gray. If it needs to be darker, you would just let the part sit in longer.

There are plenty of ways to do this. The one I have shown is simple enough for most people to have a go at and requires little to no specialist equipment. No point showing a fix that requires you spending large amounts on equipment and tools if you can get good results with items most people will have already. Cheers

The good thing is, even if you're not confident doing the fiddly hinge, it looks perfectly fine without it if you're just displaying it with a closed cockpit.
@brianartillery4 жыл бұрын
Good fix! I was wondering if you had thought about using a Tungsten Carbide tipped scriber to score plastic? I've used one for many, many years, and always got good results from it. The tip is exceedingly fine, and not damaged by repeated use on plastics. I've found the control is better than a knife, too, as you hold it like a pen.
@tperson83472 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is, I prefer the Palitoy version of the X-wing over the the Kenner version due to the black on the engines and the lack of electronics. Someday I'd love to get a hold of the UK version as well as the grey (ESB/ROTJ) version.

Regarding the smoked glass...I believe Tamiya makes a smoked glass spray-on coating, so even if you used your hinge rod out of whatever plastic you could go back and give it the right look.

Starting make mine today. Must be the type and/or brand of poly i bought, cuz it bends really far before snapping. Holding it firm on the edge of my table, after scoring it 3 times with a brand new blade, it bend 45° without a snap. So i had to score 3 times on opposite side! I think im gettin the technique now.

Hi Dave, I have a tool that I use for my modeling it's called "Tamiya plastic Scriber II" I use it for engraving recessed panel lines in the plastic of my modeling projects. This scriber tool is actually from the Olfa company in Japan, and it's basically designed for cutting plastic like you are using. I'm not sure if you are going to be doing more videos making windows, but I think this tool could make the cutting and breaking aspect a bit easier.

Another great video! Very informative. Just saved me $200-300. (Which i can now use to build my armies,lol). Yes, ebay has these selling for $40-70 right now, and its ridiculous, since there are toy shops selling complete X-Wings for that much. Red Squadron is gonna be happy, they're no longer grounded! Safety note: As a contractor, i use a utility knife every day, please hold the straight edge down VERY FIRMLY or you could severely injure yourself. Im ordering materials today, thanks again!

Fairly sure you can get the sanded parts to become clear again if you pass the plastic through a flame. Atleast thats what we used to do in the wood- / mettal shop in school. The finer you sand it the less of the groves will be visseble when you pass it throug the flame.

Is Plastic Weld a sticky liquid like super glue? I just noticed that you didn't get any stuck to tour fingers when holding the cockpit (although maybe it's just me who constantly gets super glue on my fingers) and then I realised that its maybe cos it's a chemical reaction with the plastic rather than actually being a sticky substance?
@toypolloi4 жыл бұрын
It's a solvent that only works on certain plastic types. On anything else it just evaporates.
