Lighting is so important in any space and when you live in a rental apartment, your options are often limited, not to mention the fact that you don't necessarily want to invest a whole lot of money for custom lighting. My NYC apartment had no lighting at all in the living room and even with a couple of table lamps, the space still felt too dark. I didn't have much floor space to work with so I knew I wanted to have wall sconces but when I looked in stores or online for plug-in wall lamps that would work in my rental, I realized there were very few options out there. Plus the ones that I did find were well over $100 and didn't fit the look I wanted. So I tapped into my inner MacGyver and set out to design wall sconces I could easily make in my apartment with just a drill and a few hand tools.

Great Project Video! the only thing I would do differently is to fasten the Panel Material with Velcro, so if you change your interior design, it would be easy to switch it out by just making a new Finish Panel you could make several beforehand to have a selection you can change out to.

Great tutorial. Thank you for sharing! Its impossible to find plug-in or battery operated wall sconces (not task lighting) that look really nice and are the right scale. I need 7 for my long hallway. If I could even find such a thing, to buy them and have a electrician hardwire, would cost a small fortune. Your tutorial will let me diy, save a tonne and get exactly the shade/look/scale I want. Thanks!!

id like to do something very similar to this to cover my wall mounted heater. i want to use this same frame but use perforated sheet metal as the "shade". it would be mounted with the openings on the side and maybe mounted to a picture frame (11x17) with hinges on the top and a magnet at the bottom to keep it closed. do you have any ideas on the construction method i could use?

What if you wanted to attach this to the wall more securely? I want to adapt your idea to another sconce but it is heavier than yours. Will that aluminum frame hold more weight? I'm thinking I need a mounting bracket or a way to screw it in (if its not hard wired)
