Reminds me of when I was a kid and an elderly neighbour taught me how to do this some 25 or so years ago. He also showed me a variation of this where you use a much thicker branch, cut the end flat, cut the "mouth piece" off, drill a hole in it, use a couple of small nails to re-attach it to the bark and now you have a water squirter :D

Sweet little craft Ben! Took me back over 60 years when my Grandpa made one for me when I was about 10. I couldn't remember how he did it. Now I can give it a try. Thanks for the great memory. Made one of these today for my son with one of your field knifes. I couldn't get a whistle from it but gave it to my son and I think his much slabbering in it probably took care of the wooly bits and he got it to whistle. Tomorrow we are going to use sycamore.

IsADasign that’s great. Yes clean cuts are important for sure to get it to work. Funnily enough I made one from sycamore the other day on a walk. The sap is flowing well and the bark came off easily. Hope you get good results with it. cheers Ben

You don't needs a license a UK legal knife is 3 inches or under non locking or fixed blade like a sheath knife special legitimate reason for carry a Lock knife would be your work or hobby in this case bushcraft ?😉💪🐺🐾👌💕

TimGames well if your trying to take it off this time of year you will struggle. Maybe soak it for a day in some water that may work. Best to wait till the sap rises again. 👍

amazing tutorial! thank you for sharing. question: would this method work on most types of wood/tree branches? thinking this could potentially come in handy if one found themselves in need of an emergency whistle while on a hike/backpacking trip..
