Interested in starting plants indoors? In this episode of House of Hacks, Harley shows how to make a window garden box. His wife setup a plant nursery in their window that needed a way to reflect light back onto the plants to help the plants grow straight. Harley attaches a white shade to reflect light back into the plants.

Thanks Rosh! Yeah, I find it interesting how ideas & concepts from different areas of our lives can combine in our heads. (Photo reflector -> gardening.)

Nice solution Harley. I have seen similar commercial systems where the inside is a reflective foil material but they were stupid money!

Thanks George!. Yeah, we looked at a couple different options. One was using that foil-backed, bubble-wrap type insulation. That stuff was not cheap.

i do about the same in winter to start my saplings for my garden. i made myself a 5storys rack with spiral lights beneath each floors and fluorescent tube on the sides. the whole rack is wrapped in aluminum bubble reflective insulation wrap. i even have hydronic? heating, a long tube spiral between each floor and has heated water running tru it with an aquarium pump and thermostat set in order to heat the soil to get faster germination. for watering i use a pesticide sprayer thing with the hand wand and the pump. i line my drawers with garbage bags so as to not drip water on the floor. if you do this remind to shut the heating and ventilate your plants after they get their first leaves. if you dont they will get lanky and weak.

Wow! That sounds like a great system that you've spent some time on refining!

@@HouseOfHacks i was getting desperate to start my plants and succeed. the worst thing is that after planting outside it rained for 2weeks and killed everything, and the year before that it was snow and frost. i am just not lucky with this. i think the one most important thing is to sow native plants to your zone. i actually found old forgotten sunflower potato plants that is extinct in my country and planted them. jerusalem artichoke is the english name i think, it is more available in the USA as i read. i think gardening is a complete science and very difficult to succeed it requires many times and understanding of various complex system. i wish you alot of good and happy produce. the must for me would be to grow alongside the natural composition of my backward. we are trying to much to sterilize and control everything in our garden. as the forest grows without our help so must our garden. it is in my idea that the correct plants and base technique could produce plenty to help the modern family without much work. i have found a wonderful video from a man that explain his understanding of the perfect garden. it is in french, but i will still give you the link as it might inspire you to try maybe a better way of gardening. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3qynGiqod2fqKc

Yes, there definitely is a science to it. My wife is trying to do things as naturally as possible and doing quite a bit of research on natural weed control, etc. I'll pass the link on to her. Thanks!

@@HouseOfHacks i dont want to press on you any longer, but i have found that radishes make a great sacrificial crop. all the bugs that eat leaves will attack it instead of your other plants. Thank you for all of your videos!
