Nice job! I like the idea of filling in the gaps after staining. Best mantle vid I've seen.

Thanks! It wouldn't matter as much for a wood with clear grain but for oak, filling after staining made a big difference!

love the use of the french cleat, which in hind sight I would've done for mine. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Thanks! French cleats have become my go to for hanging large or heavy things. Out of curiosity, how did you mount yours?

Excellent video! However, I'm a bit mad because now I'm gonna have to up my game a bit from what I was planning to do. 😄 Actually, I'm glad that you did such a solid, easy to follow build. Great work.

Haha thanks! Sorry to give you more work!

I wish I had of seen this video before putting wood filler on one of my projects. The filler did not stain anywhere close to the wood after I stained it. I like the tip to fill cracks after staining. Looks great!

Thanks! The filler never stains the same, so I was glad to find something that worked a bit better

Could you please tell me what stain color you used? Is it Minwax brand
@ProjectBilld9 күн бұрын
Yes minwax dark walnut. It and everything else I used is linked in the video description

Awesome. I still can't figure out why so many guys use all these screws. Am I the weird one with just my bottle of glue?

You're probably the smart one. I typically overbuild things, but it's likely not necessary

I was wondering if you passed the 320 paper after each of 6 coats of polyurethane. Thanks…great work!
@ProjectBilld8 ай бұрын
Yep a light pass with 320 on the direction of the grain between coats. Just to knock down any air bubbles or dirt that gets in the coat. And thanks!

Nice work! Would you ever build to order?
@ProjectBilld Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. If you search etsy you can find similar beams for sale but do look around as the prices can be pretty different between sellers

Once worked for a company that made mantles out of solid oak, we used an angle grinder and 80 grit to sand, they looked terrible, they looked like someone had used and angle grinder.

But you can charge extra because it's 'rustic'
@privatechannel84622 ай бұрын
@ProjectBilld we did... still looked bad
@ProjectBilld2 ай бұрын
Haha I was being sarcastic. I know what you mean, so much stuff labeled as rustic that doesn't look particularly good and doesn't fit into most people's home design
@privatechannel84622 ай бұрын
@ProjectBilld I have massively gotten into woodworking, but I have a brand new build house that "rustic" would look out of place in... ho hum
