How to make wooden door latches with wooden springs; in this video Mr. Chickadee will show you how to make lovely useful door latches out of domestic hardwoods using traditional hand tools and techniques.
We start with very hard and dry dogwood for our major components. Naturally elastic hickory makes the spring, and oak and ash wood finish out the pieces for the knob and axle rod.

Same. Haven’t seen any of his videos but I hope he has already shown the pull string knob. Works just as well and adds a lock to the end result too. You just pull the string in from inside the house and people outside can’t lift the lever anymore.

Delightful watching something so intricate being made with hand tools - the only sounds being the razor-sharp blades and drills eating into the wood.

You should make yourself a "shave-horse", (unless you already have and I've missed that video). Truly inspiring video, never thought of making a "wooden" spring for a door latch. As always, excellent video. Cheers :)

Dear Mr. Chickadee. Simply fantastic again and as always! I love good quality videos without any talking at all. The pure sounds of nature and working make them very meditational/meditative. Your impressive craftsmanship is very satisfying to watch additionally. Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health.

That’s awesome and then some. Especially since it will latch on its own when closing. My Dad made a wooden latch for an A frame fort we had as kids built over an old swing set frame. It used rope to operate from the inside. It was made like the barn latches he had growing up in Newfoundland.

traditional wood worker thinks more about finding a material thats as close the the finished product as possible. A modern worker can only make what his power tools can do, more about precision than hand working.

*Mr Chickadee* I have had a few ideas of some classes you could offer alongside the timber framing classes you already do. Firstly, why not offer tool specific, 1 day or 2 day classes in restoring tools ? Secondly, how to fell and hew a tree. Thirdly, how to do roofing in wood Fifthly, (it may have to be a 2/3/4 day course - you decide) how to Make your own treadle lathe Make your own sawhorse Make your own work bench Make your own (anything you can think of) I thought of these for several reasons : 1. It could increase your income without any major expenditure or waiting time (you wouldn't have to chop down 20 trees and hew them before a class could start, and in a felling/hewing class, this is done for you) 2. People love restoring things, especially tools, so the demand for such classes is already there 3. Having an expert like yourself on hand to help with any problems or snags that arise would be very beneficial - people very often start to restore a tool then hit a snag, can't work out how to resolve it then give up 4. The only thing you would have to supply is lunch, coffee and your expertise ! 5. All you would need is a frame and canopy to perform the classes under, not a large workshop - your next timber frame class could do the framing and roofing for you 5. For each tool group you are restoring (saws, planes, chisels, etc.) the people doing the class would provide all their own supplies from a list of what they need to bring e.g. for a plane you need to also bring a sharpening stone, a leather strop, lapping fluid. For chisels same thing (you get the idea) These classes could rotate (depending on popularity), be as big or small as you like, and could be customer driven e.g. put on your website an indicator for people to complete, which would tell you what people would like to do: I am interested in the following classes : A. Plane restoration B. Saw restoration Ç. Chisel restoration D. Felling and hewing E. Learning Roofing F. Making a sawhorse G. Making a bench H. Making treadle lathe You could then email all the people who ticked box "A" that this class is available on these dates, all those who ticked box "B", these are the dates and so on. I hope this gives you an idea or two and helps in some way. People are always looking for instruction and help with things and I am sure your expertise, especially being self taught would be of immense use to loads is people and be in high demand. Good luck.
