Interesting. In the south our HVAC vents are on the cieling. My grandfather built furniture for Frank Lloyd Wright. It is cool to see his tags there.

That's far more common there isn't a full basement. In that case the HVAC unit is usually in the attic.

Very nice, James. My former house (built about 1920) had a couple of wooden vent covers. As I recall, the gridwork was about 3/8 wide but an inch or more deep. And even then each cover had some damage. I think you were wise not to fasten the vent covers down. Good video.

I actually went looking for a curved saw a few years ago for making those folding book holders out of a single piece of wood. The japanese saw i wanted is called Azebiziki. You can get this at musical instrument making supply stores. I found a place in California that had the saw.... but it was during the first bit of covid so i wasnt going to rely on international shipping at that time (ditto for a Japanese source.) I ended up with a veneer saw from leevalley tools. I will be looking for a flooring saw in the future though since the veneer saw is a bit delicate for this work. Good video. The more hand tool work i do the less i enjoy pulling out my circular saw for home repairs, since a little plunge cut does it almost instantly as long as you have enough experience with the tool to not kill yourself.

Will be very interested in how long this lasts. I built something similar but it was wafer thin and surface mounted. It didn't last nearly as long as I hoped it would. This inset application I know will last much longer!! Great video of a very tedious build.

Considering the state of the vent being replaced, did you consider a mitered half-lap joint, or a splined miter? I made a saddle square accidentally while setting up a make a number of repeated halving joints. The final test joint went together perfectly, it was square as well. It is now nearly 20 years old.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

I had thought of making a more structural joint, but there was no need so I just stuck with the easier rout.

Gorgeous vent cover! I wonder how difficult it is to remove this for regular vacuuming out of pet hair, dust clumps, legos, etc. And if you wanted to remove it for regular cleaning, would you make it differently, like with a thumb notch, or some ither modification?

Beautiful proportions and execution! If someone wants to educate an ignorant European - floor vents in ordinary house? What are they for? Heating? With air?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
around 80% of the houses in the US are heated and cooled with Forced air systems. so there are large vents that run through the house and run hot and cold air to each room. Then the central unit also filters the air. but that is because most of the homes were made in the last 100 years and had the space built into the floors, wall and attics for the 300mm pipes
@groggjoggarn
@groggjoggarn Жыл бұрын
Ok, cool. Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I’m from Sweden and have only ever encountered waterborne heating in housing. New and old alike. Just to quench my curiosity, is it a method still being installed? Instinctively, it would seem as a less efficient medium to me? Though, my knowledge about those things are rudimentary at best…

That would be a bit on the thin side. But you can change the pattern to be whatever you want. The more sticks you put in the stronger it is.
