Comment on the short you made about a strop - on wood or free-handed. As a shoemaker, and, as did all barbers for ages, the leather strop had a metal grip in one end with a leather tie attached, which you tied to the end of a solid support - like the work bench. The other end was shaped as a sort of handle. One would grip the handle and pull the strop tight, and then begin stropping. Additionally, there was sometime a piece of thick waved canvas the same shape as the strop, that one would turn to the front/top and use to remove any final burrs. Just FYI, thanks.

Rob Cosman, the great chinese tool pusher
@timberanvil3788
@timberanvil3788 Жыл бұрын
@@kz.irudimen I'd hardly consider him a "pusher". He demonstrates that you don't need to spend several hundred dollars on a Lie Nielsen when you can get very acceptable performance from overseas variants. I always strive to buy American...but I simply don't make Lie Nielsen money and if that's the type of tools he "pushed" his videos would depict a substantial barrier of accessibility to the craft of woodworking reserving it only for people who have significant disposable income.

@timberanvil3788 Жыл бұрын
I'd also like to add that Rob's video on hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery was absolutely priceless - I went from never making such a joint to building a display table for my mother with 16 exquisitely clean and snug mortise and tenon joints.

@@timberanvil3788 What's the reason not to recommend Veritas then ? Except for the fact he's had a lawsuit against them and his lawyers told him not to mention them ever even though he's canadian. I don't care about US made, I just find it sad that because of Woodriver's NA exclusivity agreement with Qiangsheng you guys are paying twice as much compared to the prices in Europe/China, where there is competition and those tools are sold under 4 or 5 brands. And instead of realizing you're getting scammed by people like Rob Cosman, you're cheering and asking for more.
@timberanvil3788
@timberanvil3788 Жыл бұрын
@@kz.irudimen dude people can buy whatever tools they want. I personally own zero wood river tools. I've got a veritas dovetail saw and Mk-II honing gauge. Everything else is antiques I've restored. I'm not trying to make you like Rob Cosman but in the scope of the Purple Heart Project, I believe Rob has had a profoundly positive impact on the lives of a lot of veterans. As a veteran myself, I sincerely appreciate his dedication to the cause.

Hey, i'm a long time viewer that is finally able to return to woodworking! I have been slowing re-buying the larger shop tools I had to unfortunately get rid of a while back. (example: just got a 38" wooden lathe today for a b-day present(so, so, so excited lol)) I was wondering if you had an opinion on what are a couple tools that you suggest I should make now that I have a functioning woodworking shop. skill levels needed are not really an issue either. I made a table saw sled, i threw together a crappy little router table, i set up a corner work brench with wrap wround pegboard, ect. maybe you have some suggestions on some hand tools I could make and kill some time with? i would really appreciate it, I need some small projects atm, i'm going through a low time in life right now.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

usually my answer is make the tools you don't have but would soon need. a hand router is a good one. you could make some hand screw clamps. you can never have enough of those.

Sorry to hear your NAS got hacked. I did a bunch of research a while back and landed on using a password manager called DashLane. It’s not free, but it makes having high security and unique passwords for all your login manageable. The family plan is affordable and keeps those on your home network secure so they don’t accidentally creat security issues. There’s also a nice password sharing tool. It’s worth the cost and effort IMHO.

Is there a way to do things like this if u don't have a vice or bench???. The only space I have to work is on a table outside and I have a wood stump from an old tree with a belt over it to use as a clamp for small things. If there is, can u make a video please showing diff ways to hold down pieces so they can be sawed and chiseled.... Thxs

@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
Where there is a will there is a way. There are lots of interesting ways of workholding without a vice. But you may want to think about making a bench on bench. It's basically a small bench top you can store away but you can take it out and put it on top of a table or countertop to do woodworking on. It is all possible to do without the bench but the bench really makes everything so much easier
