How To Make a Wooden Guest Book Sign || Alternative Guest Book

Hello!
Today, I'm posting this video to show you how I made my guest book for my wedding! I'll have a list of materials used below as well as a link to the pens I found to work the best for signing. List of materials:
Wooden Sign (Walmart) Jillibean Soup 12" x 16" Mix Media Pine Panel
Wood Stain (Lowes) Minwax Wood Finish Satin Dark Walnut Oil-based Interior Stain
-White Acrylic Paint (Literally You Can Find This Anywhere)
Paint Pen (Walmart or Hobby Lobby) - Sharpie Permanent Paint Marker, Fine Point, White
I would suggest fine point
Sealant (Lowes) Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane Semi-Gloss Oil-Based Polyurethane I needed about 6 coats of polyurethane***

Hi, when you sealed the guest book with the polyurethane, was it a spray or a paint on? And did you seal it before and after the signatures?,

Hi! We sealed it with the spray polyurethane and we sealed it after everyone had signed it!

Your sign is absolutely amazing! I found your video bc I've just finished staining my wood for my sign and was curious if the stain will be dry enough for signing later. I was thinking white oil paint marker, what did you use? Kudos on the hand calligraphy also, I'm a sucker for that but am cheating with a die cut basswood that I'm going to paint either black/white.

Hey! Thanks for the comment! All the research I've done says as long as it's an oil based paint pen, you should be fine!

I used a Sharpie oil marker in the color white! I have the exact one I used in the description below this video!

Do you need to stain? I plan on using cedar for my guest "log" and I don't want to change the color so to speak. Is there a clear primer I should be using? I have small pieces I can practice on before the big day.

If you like the natural color of your wood, I definitely wouldn't stain it then! I just stained mine because I used Pine Wood! I used clear primer! I listed the primer used in the description!

I’m making my own guest board, have used a water based stain and will be sealing it with Polyurethane clear coat. Would acrylic paint pens work on the polyurethane coat or will it wipe off/ bleed?

I think you'll be fine with the acrylic paint pens! Most articles I've read said it's needs to be an oil based paint pen but I work with acrylics a lot too and I think it'll be fine!

Can you use spray paint instead of using stain? I have a friend getting married and she wants a rose gold sign and black signatures. I have never done one of these before so just looking to get all the helpful tips i can! Thanks in advance!

Ohhhh that sounds super cute! Using spray paint, from personal experience, would need to be sealed before anyone tried signing it, because spray paint has a tendency to tear and flake off when written on. So I'm not saying it can't be done, but you would definitely have to seal it more than once. Once after you spray paint and then another time after all the guests had signed it! ❤️ Hope this helps!

were doing a live edge slab for my wedding... were hooping to have people sign it and then finish it to turn it into a bar top. do you think we should finish it with something first and then have people sign? do you think sharpies or acrylic paint pens? is there something we could finish it with after signatures that would make it stand up to being a bar top?

I would definitely treat it with something because live edge slabs tend to make the pens bleed. And I would definitely go the route of paint pens if you arent gonna seal it before. And for a bar top, it may be worth it to top it off with clear epoxy resin. It tends to hold up better than just polyurethane for things like tables and bar tops. ❤️

I have a list of products in the description below this video! I used the Sharpie paint pen with the fine tip in the color white. They worked the best out of all the paint pens I tried. From what I've researched, it's best to use an oil based paint pen. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks for your comment! My father in law used brackets and a wire to hang our sign! It was pretty heavy so he didn't want to risk it falling! So I would suggest heavy duty wire connected to the triangle hangers! ❤️

I have a list of materials used in the description below this video! I personally used a 12"x16" piece of wood, but if you have a lot of people coming to your wedding, I would get a bigger piece of wood. The pens I used were the Sharpie permanent paint markers! They worked the best out of all the paint pens I tried!

@@najiyanaji207 all of the articles I read say that it needs to be an oil based paint pen. Other markers that aren't paint pens won't transfer as well.
