Thanks for the Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Rassiff Amazing Woodwork Blaster (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a good one off guide for getting the best woodworking plans without the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my cooworker at very last got astronomical results with it.

Haha, love seeing others make the same type of mistakes that happen to all us woodworkers. It appears you glued the sides on before cutting the profile in the first part of the video. Turned out really nice though!
@dpmakestuff9 жыл бұрын
I'm the first to admit I make "those" mistakes. This one was planned though. I wanted the base to be made from a solid piece so I had to glue the sides on, then the bottom and cut the sides off that were attached to the bottom. That sounds confusing to me having typed it out. Thanks! It works great. I want to build another.

@dpmakestuff9 жыл бұрын
I use it for light planing. It doesn't have a big handle so it might not make a great jack plane. I don't know what number it would be. It's 10" long.

Hi Dustin...just watched your video. Your plane has a nice shape. I might do something similar. The Lee Valley/Veritas instructions for this plane kit indicate that it is supposed to be a bevel down design yet you appear to have mounted your blade in a bevel up orientation. Was this intentional? If so, you have a rather steep cutting angle of about 70 degrees. How is this working for you? Have you tried the bevel down orientation, which would give you a 45 degree cutting angle?
@dpmakestuff8 жыл бұрын
I assembled the plane incorrectly in the video and it cut terrible. I flipped the blade and it sings! I have plans to redo this video in the near future since I want to build another one. It's a great kit.
@MikeKapotsy10 жыл бұрын
Very nice work Dustin. What was the finish used and do you always bake it in with heat gun?
@dpmakestuff10 жыл бұрын
It's a great recipe. 2 oz beeswax and 1 cup mineral oil. Heat the oil in a double boiler, break up the wax and melt it completely, let it cool in a container. I use the heat gun to make sure it gets into all the tight spots and it just speeds the absorption up. You don't need to bake it, but it doesn't hurt. 100% food safe too!
@MikeKapotsy10 жыл бұрын
Aha, I have done that before for cutting boards. So you store it in a can after it hardens and continue to use it like wax?

ee Valley recommends the iron as bevel DOWN.I noticed you put it in bevel UP.How does this affect the cutting action.?Typically a bevel up is for a low angle plane but this has a bed of 45 degrees .That means you have a 70 deg cut angle instead of 29 deg .I could be wrong but it shouldnt cut very well..
@dpmakestuff9 жыл бұрын
738polarbear You get the hawk eye award. In the video, I installed it with the writing up (bevel up) and it didn't cut very well. After reading the instructions, I flipped it around and was blown away at how good it cut.

@alyriatutoring56977 жыл бұрын
question, how does a plane like this that has several pieces glued and laminated together hold up with weathering/movement? I've been considering making my own Japanese plane body (dai) but to mortise out the correct bedding angle is extremely difficult on a single block of wood. I would much rather make something like this and glue up some sides.

Beautiful work. I am using your video to create a similar plane for myself. Now, I have a question. I noticed that at about minute 1 you are gluing the sides and the sole to the core. Then at 1:37 you have only the core and the sole and you proceed to mark and cut it. Was the first glue up an error? lol Sorry to bring it out, but if you didn't edit it out I'd guess you didn't care us finding out.
@dpmakestuff8 жыл бұрын
Nope, not an error. I needed to have the sides attached to the sole and since they were 4 separate boards, I had to glue everything together before cutting it apart.
@lexugax8 жыл бұрын
+Ernest Wong Hi, well there are many types of planes for many different types of jobs, but in general they are used for controlled stock removal and redimensioning to (like in this case) smoothing to shaping. With a smoothing plane you can leave a wood surface smooth and ready for finishing without the need for sanding.

@@dpmakestuff you definitely glued both sides and the sole on at 1:30 then shortly after, the sides are gone.
@dpmakestuff6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Like I said, I need the base attached. I glue it on and then chopped it off so the sides and the base were attached. If you think about it step by step you'll understand why I did it. If I f'd up I'd admit it... that's not the case here.
@MrApru16 жыл бұрын
@@dpmakestuff did you attach it just to keep the sides flush? I'm a beginner.
@dpmakestuff5 жыл бұрын
I wanted contrasting woods and I wanted the sole to made from a single piece of wood. The first batch of glue ups was just to make a wooden blank. Imagine I skipped the blank glue up and just started with a solid piece of wood. The same steps would have to be taken.
