Aren't the pocket holes supposed to be on the outside?

It depends on the application. This is the rule I follow from Kreg tools: "2. Determine where you want to drill your pocket holes. If the outside of your box will show, like on an entertainment center, you’ll want the pocket holes on the inside faces. If the inside will show and the outside is hidden, such as on most kitchen cabinets, you can place the pocket holes on outside faces." learn.kregtool.com/learn/7-simple-joints-with-your-kreg-pocket-hole-jig/ In my case, this is a rolling storage cabinet for which the back can be seen. Therefore I didn't want the pocket holes showing, but did add glue to the joint for extra strength. Thanks

If you want any sort of structural integrity yes. This method is a little bit stronger than brad nails.

@@evanross9404 it depends on the application. This is the back panel on a rolling storage cabinet for which the majority of the load is vertical through the panel. I didn't want the pocket holes visible externally, so placing them on the inside made sense. The joint is also glued. This is the recommended approach from Kreg (see link in earlier comment). This cabinet now has a 40kg drill press mounted on the top, has been wheeled all around my shop and is holding up just fine.

Nice jig but wrong way to set the Kreg screws. Going from the outside of the corner creates more bite for the screw

The rule I follow is: go from the outside in (like you suggested) if the pocket holes won't be seen externally. Go from the inside out (like I did in the video) if the pocket holes would be seen externally. Kreg actually recommend this approach on their website: learn.kregtool.com/learn/7-simple-joints-with-your-kreg-pocket-hole-jig/ "2. Determine where you want to drill your pocket holes. If the outside of your box will show, like on an entertainment center, you’ll want the pocket holes on the inside faces. If I go from the inside out, I usually also add glue for extra strength. Thanks for commenting

If this build was for an internal kitchen cabinet, I would put the pocket hole screws on the outside too. This build was for a rolling storage cabinet and I didn't want the screws external where they would be seen. This is the approach recommended by Kreg tools: "2. Determine where you want to drill your pocket holes. If the outside of your box will show, like on an entertainment center, you’ll want the pocket holes on the inside faces. If the inside will show and the outside is hidden, such as on most kitchen cabinets, you can place the pocket holes on outside faces." learn.kregtool.com/learn/7-simple-joints-with-your-kreg-pocket-hole-jig/ Yes, you could also align the panels with a square, but in my experience there is always the chance of the panels moving when inserting the screws. The two panels will remain perfectly aligned if clamped during assembly. It's quick and easy to do with this jig so just makes sense to me.

The miter saw would be enough for the cuts I made. I usually use the table saw if I want a cleaner cut.

And what about the bottom? 🤦🏻‍♂️
@kiwiworkshop
@kiwiworkshop Жыл бұрын
I use the same jig on the bottom too. It works by sliding the cabinet slightly over the edge, so the base panel and side panels can be clamped. I'm working on a full length video for this cabinet that will show the corner jig used in a few different places.

The jig is good but the screws run the wrong direction. It would be proper to run the toe screws from the opposite side into the thick of the opposite board.

Hi, this was discussed earlier in the comments. This build is for a rolling storage cabinet and I didn't want the pocket holes exposed on an outside face. When the pocket holes won't be seen, I go from the opposite side like you suggested. If the inside will show and the outside is hidden, such as on most kitchen cabinets, you can place the pocket holes on outside faces." Adding glue to the joint where the screws are on the inside will make it strong enough for most applications. Thanks

You drill and screw from the side that won’t show

@@paulciley3727 before doing something ass backwards just to satisfy another condition isn’t ingenious. Sometimes you take a trip outside the box and let dowels and glue do the trick.

I only took the time to mention it because I’ve seen Kreg screws ran the wrong way fail time and time again. Run it right and use plugs. Maybe structural continuity isn’t important to you. Good luck

@@Swifty7361 project much? Seems like you’re stuck in a box. If you take issue with the product’s approved usage take it up with the manufacturer as they recommend this method for certain applications. In regards to “structural continuity” I assume you meant structural INTEGRITY. There’s plenty of material there for the correct plywood screws to bite into. But all aside, he’s just demonstrating a method not a particular recommended application. Maybe just appreciate the content... or don’t. And keep scrolling instead of asserting something you think you know but haven’t taken the time to research.
