Also would 2 packs work better than one for a starter
@CityscapeBrewing Жыл бұрын
If you are making a starter, only one pack is necessary. If you're not making a starter, you can definitely pitch two packs in your wort instead of making a starter.

Even though I have dry yeast it’s a little old but not out of date . I do canning so your video on canning yeast starter was right up my alley . Have several mason jar of wort now so might as well use them. Thanks for reply

Can I use a pkg of dry yeast in place of liquid?
@CityscapeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Yes. Dry yeast has more active cells than liquid yeast in most cases, So you don't necessarily need to make a starter unless your gravity is over 1.070 I would say.

Just a question, I bought abt 500 conditioner tablets that I have changed my mind abt using. So they don’t go to waste is it possible to use them in place of dme for a ready to use yeast starter ?
@CityscapeBrewing Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do that. I'm not sure that it's made for that kind of thing. It's just sugar for a carbonation for your bottles, the sugar that you get off the malt is different. If you're not going to use them, just hang on to them. Sometimes when I keg beer I have a little bit extra after the keg is full, and put a few in bottles and the carbonation drops work perfectly for that having them on hand.

I was just wondering bc it’s not just sugar says it has dme in it. But you probably right don’t want to waste my time

Dennis, Thank you for the simple straightforward video. Being new at this, for ales, do you usually make this starter then add this rather than "pitching" a packet of yeast?
@CityscapeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Good question! It depends on the size of the beer and the type of yeast. If I am using liquid yeast, I almost always make a starter no matter the size, but definitely for a beer with an original gravity over 1.050. Dry yeast tends to have a higher cell count, and can typically handle beers with an original gravity up to about 1.060. If you don't have time to make a starter, you can always pitch two packets of liquid or dry yeast too. However, there are other benefits of making a starter though, it "wakes up the yeast" and you'll see faster fermentation activity and less chances of off flavors from stressed or under pitched yeast.

Is the flask necessary? Could this be done in a Mason jar? I was looking at the yeast cake from the brew I did today, thinking that I could reuse that if I was more comfortable with the entire process. I mean, isn't basically the same thing as what you are doing here?
@CityscapeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Short answer. Yes, you're doing the same thing on a smaller scale, but your beer will have more trub and hops In it. With that said, I do reuse the trub sometimes when I don't do a very hoppy beer.( I should make a video on that) But you have to use it within a few weeks. Again. The benefit of doing a yeast starter is starting from a new vial of yeast, you can replicate only the yeast without much trub and hop particles.

Also, you can do it in a mason jar as long as it can handle hot liquids... But the flask really helps with the wide base for spinning on a stir plate. If you get one and it holds a lot more volume than a typical mason jar. I like to do 1 Liter starters minimum.

Oh I forgot to ask. My friend is all excited about me brewing beer and he insists that we should get kegs. He even went so far as saying he would get them. I mean, how can I say no? lol What are your thoughts on a decent setup? What kind of kegs should I be looking for?
@CityscapeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Ball lock Cornelius kegs. You'll need at least a 5 lb CO2 tank, a regulator, and two hoses. With the ball lock connections. You can buy a kit that has everything together usually for a bit cheaper.
@CityscapeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
You can pick up a 5 lb CO2 tank from your homebrew store or call around for a place that might sell them or refill them. You definitely don't need a new one. Other than that, here are the other items you'll need to get started. Hoses with ball lock connections amzn.to/3pBszGK regulator amzn.to/3pC2RBN and used ball lock keg amzn.to/3pAVzyk
