Is Propper Starter wort for yeast starters a good value?
Precanned wort for creating instant yeast starters! Is this stuff worth it?
What are the pros and cons of using Propper Stater compared to DME?

Watching you slap the yeast pack reminded me of a brew day when I slapped the pack too hard and the pack exploded all over my kitchen. I was right in the middle of brewing a batch, luckily my wife was able to run to a LHBS and pick up another pack of yeast.

I will never be able to smack the pack again without worrying about that. I used to be very concerned about that happening, but so far, knock on wood, it hasn't happened. Sadly, I should have smacked the packet a good hour or so before the video but I wasn't thinking about it at the time.

I like to make my own with a pressure canner (I have one for canning veggies from the garden) but canned wort is definitely my favorite method now even if I wasn't canning my own. Too many horror stories of shattering Erlenmeyer flasks from freshly boiled wort and chilling starters down is never a fun time

Ouch, as I hate broken glass. My wife is getting into canning a lot lately and although I know how, I might have her due it for me as it is always more convenient when someone else does the work. 😂

I always use the cans. Its just too easy not too. I also keep a small yeast bank and usually have packs of yeast as well. The closest LHBS is about an hour away so I can make a trip if I REALLY need to but prefer not to make a trip if its just something small like that.

Yeah, I just felt these cans were for the lazy, but honestly, life gets crazy, and they are beyond quick and easy. I feel like, eventually, we might not have an LHBS down the road as we used to have 3, and now we are down to one, and the owner is the only employee compared to a few years before covid when there were 3 sites, and every site had 2 to 3 employees.

I use propper starter every time. Used dme once and that was enough. I don't even use a measuring cup.. just dump the can into a flask, fill the can with water, then dump it in.

I swear, even lightly humid air causes DME to stick to EVERYTHING! It is messy, drives me nuts, and as mentioned, requires way too much time for the hassle unless you are doing a ton of yeast starters, it really isn't worth the hassle. I agree, dump the propper starter in with about 2 cups of water and rock on!

It was a great value a recently when adventures in homebrewing was blowing out their Propper stock for a little more than a $1 a can. Unfortunately my 2 case order was cancelled, lol!

WOW! That is a fantastic deal! Yeah, I've been down that road with a few companies including AIH where you order an amazing deal but they run out and cancel your order. Sounds like their web hosting database needs a better inventory control setup.

@@BitterRealityBrewing ha, yeah you got that right. AiH was getting rid of Propper to just use the Fast Pitch branded stuff since they are not in the Northern Brewer family. I think if I ordered only a few or ten cans, with a bunch of other stuff I might have been lucky... with 48 cans alone, it was cancelled. But great video and analysis. I do make my own starter wort and pressure can/jar it with old malt/hops. Not convenient per say with the overhead, but cheap in the raw materials and easy to make the starters.

I really like the proper starter from omega yeast and northern brewers fast pitch. Of the to if I had to pick I like northern brewers more. I feel like I get better results. With but I put wort from can in my sanitized flask. I fill the can with a bottle of water then that goes in the flask. Put in yeast then shack or put on stir plate for a minimum of 24 hours no more than 38 hours

I've been doing 1.032 yeast starters for years. Recently I saw info suggesting 1.020 can be beneficial for yeast growth and allowing for better attenuation. So now, I'm using these with 48 oz of distilled water doubling my yeast starters. I'll eventually do some more yeast counting with 1.040 vs 1.032 vs 1.020 to see how it is impacting yeast growth.

I just brewed a partial grain extract ipa last weekend. I used a can of the propper starter to help expedite the Safeale 05 yeast munchies from starting. I did not realize until watching this video that I forgot to add any water to the starter before pouring it all in my 5 gallons of wort. Just the can and packet of yeast. I am thinking I am ok, will tell for sure when I keg the beer in a few. Great videos…. Love them all. I know a little late, but congrats on the new brewery looks fantastic.

Thank you for the kind words. And yes, 16 oz at 1.080 diluted with 5 gallons x 128 = 640 oz of what ever your original OG was at might bump it up a tiny bit in ABV, but not enough to notice or worry about. I was wondering what what a can of this stuff would taste like fermented out with the added 16 oz water - 32 oz beer? Thinking mild pilsner.

I thought they were for the lazy, but I am sold on them now being huge time savers. I will still did DME yeast starters when I'm doing a large number of yeast starters for maintaining my yeast bank, but if it is for a brew the next day I'll use Propper Starter for my main and my backup yeasts.

DME has an "eternity" shelf life. Does Propper Starter have a shelf life? Whatever...I get convenience, but you can make (10) 12 oz starters out of 1 gallon of wort. You're not even using hops which is one of the expense components. I make up a bunch of starters in ball jars and just don't innoculate it with yeast until I need one. Take one out, innoculate it, drop in a stirrer and stir it for days. My worries come in with not knowing how many millions of cells I actually have in my jars. No worries...like canned starters? Use them. Knowing how to make your own in case you can't get any? PRICELESS.

The shelf life for the Propper starter seems to be about 1.5 years based on the ones I've received so far. I have thought about canning as I was helping my wife do that with some Blueberry Lemon Jam this last weekend. I will still use DME when I'm doing a ton of starters to maintain my liquid yeasts that I keep banked. I always thought this stuff was a joke until I was short on time which is why it won me over as it was beyond quick and easy (a lot less messy too). As for the Yeast Cells...I feel your pain as I have all the equipment for doing that and even went to White Labs for 3 days of training on yeast where we spent a lot of time looking through a microscope (that makes mine look like crap but it gets the job done). The problem I have with yeast counting (which I'll continue to do from time to time) is that it takes time, which I seem to be very short on these days.

@@BitterRealityBrewing I’ll say this I used fast pitch to make a starter for lutra yeast. Let it go for 26 hours on my stir plate. Once I pitch it within maybe 2 hours ,y air lock was going crazy and my Graham cracker stout tasted amazing. It’s not sitting in a keg aging for a month before it goes on tap

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to get into making yeast starters. I'm use to using dry yeast. Dry yeast for me is cheaper right now then buying liquid. I just don't have good storage to harvest yeast right now. I guess you can call me being cheap. LOL. Cheers!

It's funny you should say that, as usually dry yeast is my backup, but recently I pitched the dry yeast Baja from Cellar Science and after 3 days...nothing. I ended up pitching White Labs 940, which saved my future beer, which is now nicely fermenting. The dry yeast was in date and pretty fresh but a complete dud.

Making my first ever starter today using Propper, never attempted to before because it seemed like such a hassle so I just bought extra yeast when needed. Now that the price of yeast has skyrocketed in my area (for White Labs at least) I decided to make a starter instead. Two packs of WL yeast would have cost over $30🤯😭

I think you'll find doing the starters with Propper start will be a breeze. As for the yeast, I fully understand and hopefully White Labs will continue with the new initiative of producing dry versions. They are cheaper and last a lot longer. Lallemands has been producing some great dry yeasts also. Sadly there are still some amazing liquid yeast that White Labs still produces which sadly there are not alternatives that I like nearly as well. Like their Irish Ale yeast and their Dusseldorf yeast.
