That’s very helpful feedback! I’m also planning livestreams where I write and create synth based pop songs in real time after selecting a random bpm. There will probably be a ‘time challenge’ element to it - maybe 90 mins - but I’m still doing tests and trying to get the streaming tech to work ;)

I was watching some Dead or Alive documentary and they were saying about the demos of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" how they were good when listened but the demo itself wasn't ready to go live. Recordings then went to proper engineer and they created it the way we know it. You speaking of the mindset and the ways of creating basses (layering with those few parameters in mind) really hits the target. I got tons of ideas now, when I create and release them I hope I will remember to ping you. Cheers!

You did it again! You have the ears, which is the prerequisite to make great live knob tweaking. I like you keep it slow. It gives your channel a feel that you don’t find elsewhere. Content providers may be afraid that slowness could be detrimental to views, people skipping. But in your case, it encourages me to view your videos when I have time, and not skip a beat! You found a great format.

Just dropping a note on here to say how much I am enjoying your content. The algorithm matched us at the perfect time as I am just starting out on my hardware synth journey after many years of playing around with vsts. My music background is growing up in the 80's, started DJ'ing around 1996 a did that for around 20 years on and off and have been learning the Piano for the last 2 years, so now is the time to start applying the theory to the styles of music that i am most passionate about. The Curtis chip can be wired for 1, 2, 3, or 4 stages. Craig Anderton published a multi-mode switch configurable filter using the chip you could set it for band, notch, and low-pass.

You’ll find the Curtis filter in the Pro-1 is also 4-pole, 24 dB. It’s just different from the Moog-style ladder filter.

That’s fantastic! The Pro-1 is such a great synth and can do many thinks the Model D can’t. Have a look at my ‘Pluck Off’ video if you haven’t already seen it for an example, but the Pro-1 is probably better at plucks, drones, and of course hard sync sounds which the Model D can’t do at all! I’m working on a load of patch idea videos and will probably do them as comparisons. Do you have the Neutron or any other Behringer (or other) synths? I’m working on a Vox Humana video which involves using the Neutron, Model D, and Pro-1 all patched together…

@@DistortThePreamp That is very tempting. The thing is, I bought two GS Music e7's earlier this year, for 14 voice total polyphony, and each being 4 part multi-timbral. £3k, lol. They have MPE, but no Poly AT, unfortunately. The sound is top tier. Space is also an issue. It will already be a struggle to fit in the Model D and Pro 1! I'm trying to control the urge to get a CAT for £140.

Haha - I really ought to have a line mixer too! Not to submit because I’ve got loads of inputs. But a line mixer would mean I could add effects to multiple tracks but keep them dry on record. Although having said that I’ve got loads of inputs I’ve only got 16. And every single time I make a video I run out. 32 would be amazing. 24 would be great. But even an extra couple would help.

Hahaha! That’s hilarious! Although I’m not selling any of those that you list - they are all workhorses that I use on every session. What else do I have (thinks)… a Korg M1R, a Yamaha TX81Z, an E-mu ESI-32, a DeepMind 12R, a TD-3, and a MicroBrute… I think you might consider getting an analog poly like the Pro-800 instead of the D…

@@DistortThePreamp if I get a true analogue poly it's likely to be a UB-Xa but they missed the boat when I was looking for a "master keyboard that makes great sounds" - I gave up waiting and bought a DX7 IID which had the added bonus of bringing back the DX5 patches I created in the late 80s. Generally I'm happy with my faux analogues: Reface CS is my go-to when I'm in the flow (it has speed and buckets of mojo) and I've got a MicroKORG and JP-08 when the requirements get beyond the CS.

Oh the UB-Xa is extraordinary at any price, and at the price they’re selling it for it’s ludicrous. The poly aftertouch is ridiculous and takes it waaaaaaaay beyond the ‘clone’ it’s being marketed as.

So Im wanting to do some little live jams with my Push2 (as it feels Lew DAW like) and micro freak. Im recording clips of the Models 15 to free it up for more channels, but experimenting with workflow. When ive got it together ill post a video. But the model D would be great for Bass lines.

Amazing! I’ve actually spent the afternoon working on a ‘remastered’ version of this where I fix the audio. A lot of people complained that they couldn’t hear what I was saying on the early videos and it took me a few goes to get right. Meanwhile, I did a video called something like ‘The Sound of 1982’ which ostensibly is all about the Rio (Duran Duran) arps but has actually got a load of arp techniques, especially at the end where I do a live performance. It’s not ambient like this, but you might like it :)

Great demo and a very catchy arp/sequence to say all you have going on is a single monophonic synth and a bass drum. There is no wrong answer to this question as both sound great. From your demo the Pro One has the edge for pluck sound as having a separate Decay and Release control allows more sonic nuances in articulation than the Model D. The Model D has the fuller, richer tone with more weight in the bass end. I can listen to this track looping for hours. That ducking when the bass drum cuts in gives a great pulse to the beat. Thanks for the inspiration. The Pro One uses a 4 pole 24 dB/Oct filter not 12dB, although the Curtis CEM 3320 filter chip is a multimode filter. You make a great point about the different sonic qualities of each type of filter. Add Behringer's Odyssey, Cat, MS-20 and WASP alongside the Model D and Pro One and you have 6 very different sounding 24 dB/Octave filters, each with their own musical sweet spot and sonic niche.

I love hardware sequencers so much. I've still got an old Roland MSQ700 although I accidentally threw away the power cable (I kid you not) and it doesn't fire up wit the replacement. I'll get it fixed, but TBH it's days of being a workhorse are over now I've completely cut over to my Pyramid. Though it remains a beautiful thing...

Korg MS-20 is 2-pole(and 1 pole high pass) though. As was the original Arp Odyssey (later models of the Odyssey had 4 pole filters).

@@Magnus_Loov Thanks for the correction on the MS-20. I'm usually up on my filters, but not this one, even though I have the same filter chips in my Korg Delta (LN13600/LN13700). I once had a white panel ARP Odyssey with the 4023 2 pole filter you mention and loved it until the instrument died.

I am at the time unable to do dawless, am running Linux with MusE and Carla, have tried yesterday and today to use Cardinal with some sequencers, works well as far as i can see. Have designed a hardware with (by the time) up to 4 RC-servos to turn four of the 9 "Filter/Envelope"-knobs. Works, but takes time to be released as a project for rebuild.

All DAWless! Absolutely everything on my channel is DAWless :) Which is to say that it’s made DAWlessly but recorded into a DAW. Even the reverbs and delays were made on a rather humble piece of outboard gear. These days my main sequencer is the Pyramid Squarp. It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough and I’ve worked with worse! I don’t have anything against DAWs btw - I mix entirely in the box and would be lost without them!

That’s so well put. The Model D (played correctly) can sound like a warm hug whereas the Pro-1 is trying to get your attention like a needy synth.

That’s an interesting question. The answer is it doesn’t sound all that inspiring. Don’t get me wrong - I absolutely LOVE my Neutron, but I don’t tend to reach for it for this sort of sound. I don’t like the way the two oscillators have a mix rather than independent oscillator controls for a start. However there are a lot of sounds I can only make on the Neutron. Have you seen my video about Noise? Can’t do that on a Model D or Pro-1. And I love it for sharp percussive sounds, some ambient drones… I also have grown to love the built in delay and overdrive. And finally I patch a lot into my Neutron, so I borrow LFOs from my other mono synths and patch them in. But I wouldn’t recommend the Neutron particularly for this sort of sound…

I also have a B FX2000 multieffect and some eurorack so I will try to reproduce what you have achieved. Thank you for the midi file. It will come in handy to recreate the whole effect. I will also try to use it with synths like BARP 2600 or DeltaCEPA. Overall great video and helped me a lot in understanding some nuances. I have subscribed to your channel. @@eafy811 The Arturia keyboards have a good build quality, although they might be overspec’d. But don’t forget you could run arps very well from a DAW! In fact that’s what did in a way - I was using a hardware sequencer, but I was very much just sending the Model D pre-canned midi that I’d recorded earlier. So honestly, if you’ve got a DAW then I’d start with that! Make sense..?

Great comparison of the 2 filters and synths in general. The Moog is smoother and more dreamy and the SCI is more funky to my ears and a bit more difficult to dial in/more feisty. I actually love my pro-one for bass - I would say the Moog is better for the material in your sequence and the sound I think you're looking for here. Would love to see a comparison with a Roland SH-101 or Juno, or even JX8-P... My only 3 osc synth is the Erebus 3 and that has a different sound to the pro-one, probably closer to the Moog...

Totally agree about the filters. Ahhh, the JX-8P is such a lovely synth. I find it a bit weird to programme even with the programming module, but it’s two independent envelope structure is so unique. I once spent about a day trying to reverse engineer the ‘Soundtrack’ patch. My eventual conclusion once I understood how it worked was that it’s pretty much impossible unless you have two synths because you need the oscillators to fade in and out under each other. And even with two synths you wouldn’t have the same filter or, of course, Roland chorus. Regrettably the JX-8P left the studio a few months ago. It was very old and those voices are hard and expensive to maintine. Though I’ve got a funny feeling that one day I’ll buy another. I don’t have a 101 at the moment, although my 303 (clone) is surprisingly flexible. It’s not just an acid machine.

@@DistortThePreamp The JX is a fantastic machine, hugely under-rated, probably due to the sad omission of PWM. The cross mod can create some great textures and I agree it can be tricky to dial in. I should add that I do also have the PG-800 which is essential and which sells for more than the synth itself. Applying modulation or envelope to the tuning while in cross mod mode can create some great sounds, comparable to a Jupiter 8. For me, the JX is the best pad machine south of a Jupiter 8, for a fraction of the cost. Having said that, it can also make some amazing bass and lead sounds, as well as arpegs. It's a secret weapon of sorts and is a unique synth. It's not essential, but for anyone who has a Juno and Prophet already, it's a great addition. I don't have a Juno but I have the Dreadbox Nymphes, which completely scratched that Juno itch - it was my Juno killer and saved me at least a grand - another fantastic synth and incredible value for money once you get past the admittedly cumbersome interface. To your point about the Roland chorus, I also have a CE-1 and an Elkorus 2. The former is the holy grail of chorus and sounds amazing, the latter is arguably the most versatile chorus effect ever created, sadly discontinued. I could go on, as you can imagine 🙂 Thanks again for your videos and interactions and I look fwd to more from your channel.

I totally agree about the JX being hugely under-rated. TBH I even prefer it as a pad machine over the Jupiter. Yeah, you totally need the programmer and even then uou can’t really ride the filter or other parameters like you can on a more conventional synth (due to the small size of the programmer controls and the fact some of them are stepped) but I *love* the sound it makes. I wish it wasn’t gone.

Absolutely. It’s simply a Behringer RD-9 which is a 909 clone. It’s not processed, but I’m routing the synth through some outboard gear which is ducking the music under the kick. See my Kick Ducking video for more details!

Hmmm. I like the sound of pretty much all the Arturia stuff. I wouldn’t recommend learning on a MicroFreak - I think it’s too experimental. The MiniBrute 2 though (the one with the keyboard) is an incredible teaching synth and sounds good. And the PolyBrute is very good, though not cheap. I’m not gonna say a bad word about Arturia though - even if some of their products don’t always hit the mark with me, it’s all very good.

I’m not sure I can remember! I think I got them from eBay. They weren’t very expensive but they were a bit of a life saver as I store all my patches by taking photos and the Model D stock knobs just don’t show the settings properly!
