The casual moustache is unironically my favorite part of this video even with the gorgeous jacket. Made me smile

Stretch fabric is a total bar-steward to work with. Always has been, always will be. Congratulations for subduing it and bending it to your will!

LOL thank you!! I feel like there's a pun in there, somewhere, but my brain's too floppy right now to make sense of it 🤐🤣

This looks just perfect! Also, I find the shot just after you’ve finished the jacket and you’re jumping around in a massive, poofy Victorian jacket with the hairstyle and under shirt and the works AND a pair of 2010s leggings and boots, absolutely hilarious.

Wonderful coat and an excellent mustachio. As a fellow lefty, I feel your pain when it comes to finding tutorials that don't assume you're right-handed.

Thank you! 😁 And YES omg!! I still can't figure out the slanty style of pad stitching that the righties all do. It's like, un-translatable 🙄 They just never have to think about making things reversible for lefties, since they NEVER have to use their non-dominant hand... (are you as bitter as me? 🤣)

firstly, I'm absolutely loving the twirly mustache!!! oh dear god. better you than me!! I've worked with velveteen once, and never again, thank you very much! 😂😂bustial disproportions, I really have to remember that. I have this pattern, along with a couple of other black snail ones, and I have so many issues with the presumed 1.5" waist reduction, just so damn many. rather than using a hugely expensive velvet board, I was taught that you can actually just use a piece of the same fabric underneath, with the pile facing up. that way you don't crush the fibres. it's worked for me for the last 15ish years. I think Charlie at "the Stitchery" on YT, included military rolls on a video she did about pleating in general. love the end product, and serious kudos to you for tailoring with stretch velveteen. the sleeves are absolutely amazing, and it's the reason I was drawn to this pattern. hope you're doing okay!!

That's a great tip for ironing, thanks! I'll try it when I tackle the waistcoat. Which is also going to be velveteen, but not the stretch kind 😬 Thanks for watching!!

@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming hope it helps you as much as it's helped me through the years! And yeah, you don't want to be using stretch again.

You can turn the dial on the side, the one that lifts and lowers the needle and sew without the pedal. I find hand crank style sewing CAN make it through layers of fabric that my machine would never be able to make it through normally. It is slow going but is faster than hand sewing for me :) Your jacket turned out beautifully!
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming 11 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I don't mind hand cranking for small bits of fabric, but I would never have the patience to sit there hand-cranking through 2 HUGE sleeves lol. I'm left handed, and the crank is on the right. Not comfy! And I'm a pretty snappy hand sewer 😁

Thanks so much for explaining this difficult pattern. I find instructions on BS patterns very very difficult too. However I did have to slow down the video to half speed so that my brain could process your instructions because you talk fast…which is absolutely fine but my mind goes slowly as I’m much older than your lovely youthful brain 😂

Thanks for watching! I hear ya on the slow down, I have to do that with certain creators, too, if it makes you feel any better 🥴 I had a LOT to cover in 25 mins. But you can always pop down here and ask questions if something is unclear!

You did a great job, as always! I have bought several Black Snail patterns, and none of them have good instructions. Due to my 60" bust, my pattern choices are limited, but I don't know that I will buy any more Black Snail patterns. I have used tons of free tutorials/patterns online with better instructions, so I guess I expect paid patterns to be better. I ordered a custom sloper pattern from a dressmaker, and I am going to try drafting my own. I can't be more frustrated than I've been with the commercial patterns I've tried.

Thank you so much! I agree about Black Snail. There's one Edwardian shirt I made that was an utter failure--the bodice was supposed to be pintucked, and not a single place in the pattern did it have instructions to do so! It's a shame, because the finished garments are always pretty 😣 I can imagine you would be frustrated. Good luck with drafting from a sloper! It's more work up front, but I bet it'll be less frustrating in the long run! 🍀

The biggest problem with Black Snail's patterns is that they're German, so some things can get lost in translation. Some of the patterns I've used are better than others. I had a lot of trouble with the 30's undergarments but no trouble at all with the fantail skirt other than the inches taken out that I forgot to account for. Which was easily changed by cutting out a new waistband and loosing some of the pleating.

It looks great! I bought 2 black snails patterns last year, trying to figure them out is on this year's to do list. No way I'm wearing a corset any time soon so they need to fit me as I am. Great demonstration of pad stitching even for a confused right hander

Gorgeous jacket! Gorgeous colour ! Well done you! (Just curious: did the original pattern specify which direction the buttonholes were supposed to go? I thought shirt /jacket buttons are usually done horizontally?
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! No. It said "make the buttonholes." That was all the instruction I had. I've never heard that before, but even if that IS the rule, I'd never have done them horizontally with this fabric, because that's the direction in which it stretches, and the stitching wouldn't hold.
