Awesome tutorial! I'm so glad I finally have a place to hide my phone while wearing 18th century clothing.

Thank you so much for the wonderful sew alongs! After 3 kiddos, getting 2 back into school, this crazy year and lots of mask making I can actually sew for me! I love historical clothing and I’m super excited to make everything I need for a 1770’s ensemble.

Hurray. I am so pleased with my pocket and this series. Thank you for making 18th century sewing so approachable for historical sewing newbies. I am pumped for learning how to sew a petticoat. 😊👏🥰

I just had a "face/palm" moment... I stitched ALL the layers of fabric and bias tape together! 🤷♀️😆 It's my first period handsewn project 💪

Thank you. This item was on my to do list and another is a petticoat. I’ve got the layers beneath it complete so it is time.

I just found your channel yesterday, hence the reason I'm asking a question 2 years after this video was posted! Why use 2 different fabric colors/patterns for the pocket? Why not use the same? Is there a historical significance? Thanks!

Hi Rebecca! Great question. Pocket faces (the part with the pocket slit) are often, though not always, made from a more decorative or visually appealing fabric. It's also a great way to utilize scraps and cabbage to use up smaller yardages without needing to match both fabrics. We hope this helps!

Thank you so much!!! This is sooooo helpful :) Have you ever considered setting online workshops similar to the ones where you teach about bodice construction and other complicated concepts. I live very far and there isn’t anything in the way of historical costuming anywhere near me. Something like people are doing with online learning now that schools are closed or so? I would love to participate in something like that. Stay safe!! Blessings :)

your sew alongs are so helpful! I just finished my first petticoat yesterday :D one question about the fabric choice, could I use heavier cotton for the pocket, in terms of both construction ease and historical accuracy? Unfortunately I don't know the exact weight of the fabric that I have but I'd say it feels about as heavy as a tablecloth.

surgleam Is this a printed cotton?

@@BurnleyandTrowbridge no, it's woven white/gray checkers

Should I pre-wash my linen tape? The fabric is pre-washed, and I expect to launder the finished pocket.
@BurnleyandTrowbridge4 жыл бұрын
You could prewash if you want to be extra safe, but the linen tape usual holds up very well without it. It's nice and tightly woven and doesn't get much noticeable shrinkage.

The diamond petticoat at the end of the video! Does Burnley sell that material? Where can I find it?!
@BurnleyandTrowbridge4 жыл бұрын
Katherine Schaepman we don’t have it at present but you would look for pre-quilted cotton.

I am clearly behind (I just got my kit - woohoo!), but I have a question: would they have ever ironed the tape in half to make it easier to hem?
@BurnleyandTrowbridge4 жыл бұрын
Sure! I used a creaser to accomplish the same thing!

Hi, I have a question; I had a go at this project as a bit of a stash buster and used some medium weight denim (97% cotton 3% elastaine) so not exactly period correct 😅 but I am working with what I have at home. So I have used cotton twill tape (it is all I have) to bind the edges and used a back stitch to secure it as the felling stitch wasn’t feeling very secure on the thick stretchy fabric. My question is actually about the amount of weight a pocket can take if it is only held up on a cotton twill tape, is there a way to reinforce the waistband? As I hope to make this a pair of pockets, and my cell phone weights a 1/4 kilo on its own.

Christina daily puts her phone, keys, wallet, and other random things in her pocket (sometimes even lunch) and hasn't had any issues with the weight being too much. She finds that she sees the wear on her pockets happening moreso from the rubbing of the bulges of stuff on the fabric of her other clothes and wearing thin more so than the binding giving out. Your mileage may vary, though, as some fabrics ravel more easily and might pull at the seam before wearing out in the body, while others might last at the seams forever but will wear thin where your keys bulge and rub your petticoat.

I don’t know if you guys are still answering questions on this, but I thought I’d try! It seems to me that this method leaves the raw edges exposed on the inside of the pocket side seams, since the tape is gemmed over the outside but there is actually no seam holding the top and bottom lawyers together on the inside. Is that correct, and if so, am I right to be concerned about the longevity of the pocket? It seems like it would wear out fairly quickly what with those inside raw edges getting rubbed with your hands going in and out all the time.

*the tape is hemmed over the outside

You are stitching around the pocket then stitching thru the tape and two layers on each side so in essence the seam is triple stitched.
