Hospital security here. I can attest that this a quality set up for a duty belt. (Our site even provides this setup for us at no cost to us) Some sites may prohibit certain gear or even the belts as part of your uniform. So just be aware of your company policies. But pretty much everything he detailed is stuff that I use on the regular. The only thing I purchased was a $30 Coast flashlight with a $6 Night-Ize holder that have both held up well. I also use a Night-Ize key clip as well. I haven’t had to replace much of anything since I started 3 years ago aside from upgrades. The radio holder was something I wish I had as a combative tweaker kicked my clipped radio clean off my belt across an ER Room one time lol I didn’t carry a holder at first even though we had them…until that happened…and it hasn’t happened since after that experience ;) Anyway this an ace of a setup and highly recommended for security! I understand some of you may not be provided this equipment by your company so if you have to go with a self purchase pick this setup! Good luck and stay safe!

Some more philosophy is in order. Sun tzu says when you are weak pretend you are strong. I agree. How do we apply that to security? A vest, even better load bearing vest implies hand to hand combat training, you are serious... But your belt should be base load out. So carry all pouches anyways and radio even if no one is on the other end... Even if you are not issued cuffs, baton, OC let people think you have it... a well selected light in a pouch looks like a baton.. empty OC pouch and cuff pouch should do the job.. stuff something in there so the pouch does not flatten.. You will look more profesional, and this will deter aggression... "LEAVE NOW OR YOU WILL BE ARESTED FOR TRESSPASSING" you may have no cuffs and no intention of arresting them. If they think you have cuffs in an empty pouch they will think you are serious.. My experience says ditch the huge maglight... a gmrs commercial looking radio will do the job.. Forget the velcro inner belt for sure . Even two belt keepers on each side keep it in place. A duty belt shows your employer you are serious. It could mean more money, better sites, better hours... Bottom line; set up your duty belt, have good cargo pants, boots, etc. Tinted and clear safety glasses.. I keep tactical tourniquet on belt, swat t in back pocket and IFAK in pant cargo pocket. Look at load bearing vest as extras as you may avoid it in hot weather.. Did I miss anything?

General rule of thumb I live by and encourage others to as well, Dont cheap out on the belt or the holster. (holster being if armed) but cheaping out on anything else is fair game. but the belt and holster are pretty much the heart of the system and i dont recommend cheaping out on them.

About 6 months ago, I purchased a SABRE flashlight/ OC spray combo. I work armed and unarmed sites, day and night shifts, it seems to have freed up some space on my belt. I haven't had to deploy any OC since I made the purchase, but the light is solid. Very happy with it.

I started with cheap gear when I first started security. If your going to be in for the long haul, than I suggest you upgrade. Buy something once so you don't have to buy it again. Streamlight/Surefire/Safariland/5.11/ASP/Monadnock/ are brands that you can buy once and never have to worry about it for a long time.

Not sure how it is in other states but in my state you need to have your current creds (Security/PI/LEO) to purchase\possess an auto lock baton. So make sure you read your local laws very carefully if you decide to upgrade from a friction (the one you have to hit on the ground to collapse) to an auto lock for personal/professional use. Another tip: Given that most sites make you write DARs still and very few employers utilize the site phone for report writing, carry whiteout in your backpack or car. And make sure it’s the tape, not the liquid. You don’t want to get whiteout on your gear, clothing, the shack, or patrol vehicle. Ask me how I know. Oh and for fuck’s sake, if you’re writing an incident report, do yourself a favor and submit the report without whiteout corrections or scratching out errors with ink. Just finish your thoughts on the one you already started, and submit a clean report with clear and concise thoughts (WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, HOW) using a new paper.

Great topic Tommy I have been in the industry for over 25 years. I wish someone had give me the advice that you did when I was starting out. I have gone from a full leather Sam Browne dity rig to a ballistic nylon. I am going back to a leather duty belt for safety at the site I work at there is a Fire danger. So I really don't want something that can melt. So I am currently designing an 1.5 in belt Sam Browne style and pouches I will be doing all the leather work myself.

Honestly when I used to work security for a really getto weed dispensary which only lasted a year for obvious reasons “my life” I didn’t have the money to buy a proper duty belt belt & set it up the way I needed it, but if you are working & it’s for your job/livelihood there is no damn excuse once you get those first couple pay checks that you still cutting corners or not wearing a belt at all after months working a security job. Sorry but that first pay check after bills should go towards something to make you look more professional. I’m not bragging by any means but I always been the type who might not have the best of things but my car is always clean, my clothes are always on point & at work i’m always as professional looking & playing my part no more or less as I can. It’s more just respecting what you do for a living or even a temporary job I play my part no more or less.

I agree too, someone who is new to security should start piecing the puzzle, piece by piece, buying a piece of equipment to add to their belt. I worked in a housing community where I had my uniform nice and cleaned, with nice shined 5.11 boots and a good belt and I instantly got recognized for it by the client I worked for. 👍

Show a set up with baton and x26 taser / mace handcuffs . ( NO FIREARM) That’s what I use some ideas on how to run it would be useful . Also idk if I may look goofy but I do wear an outer vest (safe life defense first response ) I do carry a bleed control kit in the big pouch . Keep in mind I work in DTLA so I feel it’s necessary to have the vest as it’s been getting crazy here lately . I don’t have a fire arm due to the post but this post is working for me at the moment

Been in security for over 10 years. Not a single guard I worked with or trained ever carried a flashlight at all. They'd use their cellphones for illumination. I knew a security guard who got upset because our agency wouldn't let him attach a weapon light to his issued firearm. He complained to me. I asked him if he carried a flashlight. No, he said. To which I pointed at some point you're going to pull out your firearm & use the weapon light to look for something you lost in the dark (or do paperwork) & start flagging everything & everyone & then bad things happen. My goodness, I was conducting a post inspection one evening & had a guard try to explain his firearm "wouldn't close". Huh? He removed it from the holster & pointed it at my stomach. I nearly felt sick in an instant. I sidestepped & wrapped my right hand around his trigger finger (which thankfully wasn't in the trigger guard) & slide & slowly pointed the muzzle towards the ground. Gently asked him to let go & cleared pistol. Surely, enough his issued glock would not go into battery when performing press checks or slowly closing the slide on a hot chamber unless you slapped the back plate from behind. Asked him if he ever oiled it because I could see was an older model Gen 3 that had been sitting around in storage for a while. He wasn't aware it needed to be oiled or maintained. Didn't know what a loaded chamber indicator was. Scary. Extra scary was that he said never cleared the weapon after duty. He left it loaded all the time. Wow.

@jtmcclure6998
@jtmcclure6998 3 жыл бұрын
Just my opinion, but depending on the site you work I think it’s more important to be humble. Be right…but be humble. This will keep you from having to be in a situation where an apology isn’t even needed most of the time. People can tell just by your demeanor (verbal and non verbal cues) and in your approach if you are there to hang authority over them or just be a good officer making sure everything is ok. It also is important to have SOME empathy when needed. At the very least make it known that you are listening to them. Sometimes people just want to be heard and/or vent. My site (as a Hospital security supervisor) has me in quite a few situations where patrons are more than likely in a physical/emotional crisis/mental health episode anyway. Very rarely has any situation been exactly like the previous one and it’s important to be adaptable with social skills. Again this is just opinion based on my experience. Hope this helps. Good luck and stay safe!

Note to my fellow security guards. Do NOT buy an Olight of any kind. If you have that kind of money do yourself a favor (one that I didn’t do for myself initially) and buy a Streamlight. Streamlights are more durable, longer lasting, and do not get NEARLY as hot as an Olight. They also have more candela (more important than lumens in most cases), they don’t lie about their lumen output, and don’t step down over time. Experience: Many burns and hundreds spent on wonky Olight colors

If you are armed security why not have less lethal options though

@@redtra236 Company I worked for saw it as liability. We were only allowed lethal options, as we could only use force to counter a lethal threat, therefore only a lethal response was required. I left that mess and now work for federal personnel security.

E-Bay is a good source for used duty holsters. Just stick to a common police service gun, the holster search is easier.

Stay away from ASP cuffs. At least the first generation. They are terrible. I've heard that the newer ones are OK, but the originals with the plastic double arm flex and do not latch when cuffing an uncooperative subject.
