Great guide! But if I understand that correctly, you can convert GoPro HERO 2 by just removing the lens, removing the filter and putting it back, hence making the process much easier and cheaper?

Yes that's exactly right. It is that easy.

The listings for the GoPro Hero 2 lenses say they won’t fit the 3+? Ragecam says I need to order the one they make. Are they only saying that because the IR filter hasn’t been removed??

Yes it will work. It is still the same device. The plus is only extra features.

The camera started out as an RGB camera with a focal plane that has a bayer filter. The NIR filter that was removed may have been used to make the red a truer red band - by removing the NIR filter, the red band is seeing a broader spectrum. Is this correct?

Yes it is.

I can't figure out what's going wrong. I know I'm picking up IR light. I can see the signal from my remote. However, I have had no luck using an IR flashlight. If I point it directly at the camera, it picks up light coming off the LED, but only that point. I can not light up a space at all. Any thoughts?

hy...may i ask, i bought a cheap camera then i do like in your video, but there is no filter behind the lens, what should i do?
@SciTyeTech5 жыл бұрын
I need to know what camera you bought so I can help you easier. Ir filters can usually be in either two places. One behind the lens or two, on the sensor of the camera. I think for you, the Ir filter is on the sensor. Check out my other video on how I removed the Ir filter that is on the sensor of this camera. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnmUgKBrdruLaNk

@SciTyeTech2 жыл бұрын
Yes, all you need to do is turn the lens until it becomes in focus. An easy way to do this would be to link the gopro to your phone with using the gopro app and then you can see when it is in focus in real time.

Im sorry im french what does the 37mm lens in night vision ? It increase visibily or contrast?
@SciTyeTech Жыл бұрын
No you can use any size you want. I have the 37mm IR filter for another camera I modified and this was for a demonstration. If you find an adapter for your Gopro, you can fit it into a housing that I have for this camera that I used in this video and it is a 52mm IR filter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2eapmSwfc2rf7s

@@SciTyeTech Thanks for the reply. I read into a little since posting the comment and have been trying to find a cost effective flat or narrow field of view non-distortion lens made of glass for the spectrometer build most likely using Theremino software since is open source and can be viewed as well as potentially modified for further enhancements. Looks like the lens tubes are a M12x0.5 size for most of the cameras though the sensor size I'm thinking needs to be considered... i.e. 1/2.3, 1/2.7, 1/3 or 1/4... though most are lenses seem the smaller 1/2.3 so probably not a big issue. At one time reads like there were the non-distortion lenses on the market for under $20, though I'm guessing they were bought up, re-branded and are being sold for over $100's now. I did find what reads like a glass lens and I'm waiting for a reply back to see if the IR lens can be removed.

Hey I recently bought a Akaso brave 7 le it's a GoPro knock off, and when I took the lens off there was no visible ir glass so I ordered a new lens off ebay with one that can be easily removed. My question is, how do I know if the ir filter is infused in the lens or on the sensor itself? I can link to a video of someone that replaced the lens and you can see the sensor cleaner hopefully you can help thank you!

Do you know the type of filter that would replace the GoPro embedded IR?
@SciTyeTech5 жыл бұрын
That would be an IR cut filter or low pass filter. If you are planning on doing this and then reverse it after. I would suggest buying an extra lens that has the filter, so that way you have both options. Buying just the filter to place on the outside of the camera would cause too many lens flares.

Great video. Thanks for your efforts to share with us. I am looking for a DIY hobbyist solution to make a thermal camera to troubleshoot hot, failed components on PCB boards. I have a GoPro2. IIUC, all I need to do is to remove the IR lens. But the model 2 does not have an easy way to connect it to a laptop. Does anybody have experience with a model 2 that has been modified in this manner? Would it work for what I want to do? I understand that it is not going to perform as well as a Flir. How can I get it to output to a laptop? Thanks for the help.

Are you saying you want to make a thermal camera out of a GoPro by removing the infrared filter? If so, thermal and infrared are completely two different things.
@highwayrunner97713 жыл бұрын
why would u try an nightvision camera on daylight?
@SciTyeTech3 жыл бұрын
It works both day and night. It is a full spectrum camera where you can see things that the human eye can't see. This camera is very sensitive to infrared light, therefor you can use ir leds at night and see in the dark.
