I have a couple of No 46 planes and blades. I’m sure you can make them from 1/8” tool steel with a bench grinder or even an angle grinder, a torch and a jar of oil.

Great project. I’m going to steal some of your ideas particularly the epoxy + superglue. I have a concept for a box to store my plow plane with that type of blade storage around the inside perimeter. Everything in one place and protected from condensation in my cold garage shop. Keep’em coming!

I got a few various sized cutters for my Veritas plow plane including a few sizes of tongue n groove blades and ever since you convinced me to get my files stored separately instead of a drawer looks like I'm gonna have to make a plow plane cutter box... tks a lot 😆

I just used the CA glue trick not more than an hour ago. I just did a mitered half lap joint (say that three times fast). I didn't want to risk the miter sliding during glue up at some point. as the liquid hide glue has a much longer time as compared to PVA. As such, a dab of CA glue and activator to keep all firmly in place while the liquid hide glue dries. Was super fun joint to cut and will be super strong.

James, have you thought about making the irons? You could buy some annealed O1 in the thickness you want, cut them out with a hacksaw or whatever, and then harden/temper them. I've always wondered why people didn't do that more often with some of the more obscure irons. Unless what you're after is the actual, historical iron, I think it'd work really well.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
I have thought about it and if I ever needed one I might but it would be a LOT of work as they need a bevel on all 4 sides.

No-one ever seems to mention the #50 in the list of plough/combination planes. (Which is what I have). I have the original iron box but it’s soaked extensively in motor oil from spending ~50 years in the Ute of the old tradie I bought it from. I hadn’t thought of recreating the wooden box myself.

James, would you consider doing a video on doing inlays by hand? I imagine straight line inlays would be done similar to a mortise and tenon. How would you do curved inlays with hand tools?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

I've done a few videos on that. With curved ones you just use carving gouge tools and do it the same way.

Sweet little project, James! I have some irons that could do with a case. So I'll keep this in mind. Quick question though: don't the irons slide down into the box like this? It would be annoying if you have to keep tipping them all onto your table top, just to get to the one that has slid down. 🤔 I was sort of expecting separate slots for each iron.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
My box hold them so they don't slide around. But usually they are made so that the full set you have fills up the box so they can't slide around.

I just inherited a 45 that was in hard shape. I cleaned it up and restored it and it now works brilliantly, but I've only got a 5/16" blade, and this thing is supposed to do much more. So where are the blades?

Interested to see you using a miter saw. I have a Disston made for Stanley that I picked up for a song that I used as a sash saw or a deep tenon saw. The only problem is that is a beast. Considering shortening is to save weight as I don’t use the whole length. What do you think? Good or bad idea?

Hmm. If the Irons are so rare and expensive, Maybe it was a good idea to reproduce them. I think it could be done by hand with grinding and filing or for example with Waterjet.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

Yep. You can make them yourself. They are a bit more time consuming than most as they have to be angled on all four sides. But it can be done

Very nice work! Did you use 1/8" stock for it? I was having a hard time estimating. :)
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
The stock was whatever they had on hand. I just laid it beside the iron and found something that was slightly thicker than the iron. The outside pieces are a little thicker than that. Probably somewhere around 3/16

Yes. You can relatively easily make them but they are time consuming as you have to file all four edges with a bevel.
