Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have been waiting a long time to purchase a 45 and just recently found one that didn’t cost an arm and leg. I have found your videos very helpful for all my planes.

This video was great. I was fortunate two years ago to purchase a 45 at a yard sale, complete with all the cutters for $20. I couldn’t believe my luck. Wasn’t sure what it was or how to use it. Almost resold it until I did some research on it. Would have been a big mistake. I have since learned how to use it will not part with it. 😊. Really appreciate it. Thanks

@@justplanefun I have two 45’s (one pretty complete in a box), I have a 46 with cutters and a 55 in a box that looks almost new. In fairness, I hardly ever use them but you have inspired me to get them out and try. I also have a large collection of wooden planes that I enjoy getting them to work again. I’m also a KZbinr with my channel called Arborist Blair Glenn on trees and tree care.

That was a lot of fun. I use the cam rest for any cut where I want to stabilize the plane; helps keep it vertical. Slitter would have easily popped that wood off if you had done the other side as well. 45 is a very handy tool. Use mine all the time.

Videos like yours are great for knowing what to expect when buying or what to buy thereafter 👍. I received a Stanley no.45 in the mail on Thursday. Looks like a similar year with the SW logo as well. I negotiated down to a more reasonable price as it lacks the camber leveller, the two auxiliary depth stops and the cutters except one 1/8” iron that was in the tool. After an initial cleaning and oiling it appears to be mechanically sound. I have a set of no.50 cutters that I will notch on the side and use while I wait for a good deal to come around. It’s my preference to buy tools in needs of restoration to use. I would not want to use a museum piece and the tool becomes a personalised to my style of use.

I’m glad it was helpful! I have plenty of no45 irons available if you ever want to chat about prices and such.

Excellent presentation! Have you ever tried using Lee Valley's combination plane fluting blades in the Stanley 45?
@justplanefun11 ай бұрын
I haven’t tried that before. I have a contemporary Veritas plane but it’s the skewed version so the irons wouldn’t be compatible with a Stanley 45
@Mr_Rick11 ай бұрын
@justplanefun If you look at the LV site the blades look like they'd work in the 45. I've read from others that they'll work but wondered if you tried. LV is a good source of they do work. Cheers!

Great vid. Much help trying to get my head around latest purchase. It's missing a few bits and pieces that I will acquire over time. The one part I am curious about is the thread on part 86, the fence arm set screw on the movable fence. The other flat head thumb screws and the arm set screws all appear to be 1/4-28 not easily found in Australia where metric rules. Can anyone offer help with thread specs?
@justplanefun11 ай бұрын
It should be a 10-28 thread. I have reproduction screws available and I have 10-28 taps and dies available. I also ship to Australia regularly so let me know if you’re interested. I send one large box to one customer but there are smaller packages inside said box. The recipient catches the box and forwards all the smaller packages using your postal system

Do you have any pointers on how to sharpen the "slitter" that is used for veneer?
@justplanefun11 ай бұрын
The way I understand it is each of the 4 “faces” should be flattened separately in order to bring the edges to a point but I’ll be honest - I’ve never sharpened one before

Haha yeah the screwdriver would be nice, as well as the spares. I just got an almost complete 45 with the cutters for super cheap and the screw for the spurs are just barely useable to remove. Do the screws and spurs on a no. 78 fit on the 45? Still fun to use though! I’m planning on trying to make a couple hollow and round bases as an experiment since those are supposed to be rare.
@justplanefun2 жыл бұрын
The spurs themselves are interchangeable between the 78 and the 45 but the spur screws for the 78 are longer and won’t fit the 45. I sell replacement screws and/or spurs if you need some

Great video, just picked one of these up tonight for a great price, with the only issue being that the set screw for the adjustable fence was sheared off. You're a smart fellow on Stanley planes, so I have a question, but maybe not necessarily in your wheel house. I have asked a few people and no one seems to know answer. On Stanley later series (5 digit) plow combination plains not have a 3/4 inch cutter? For example my 12-250 has 17 piece cutter set and three others but goes from 5/8 to 7/8, skipping 3/4 and it is not listed as available in manual.Just curious to me.
