"How to Make and Eco-Print a Nuno Felt Scarf" shows how to make a soft, fine fabric out of wool and silk using the wet-felting technique, and then eco-print and eco-dye it with leaves and petals. You will see how to lay out the wool rovings onto the silk chiffon so that when felted you have a lightweight scarf that has areas of see-through chiffon as part of the fabric. After that you learn how to add natural prints and delicate colour to the details already embedded in the felting process, by using rose leaves and petals. I have included materials used and handy affiliate links for the complete project for you below.
MATERIALS USED TO MAKE NUNO FELT SCARF:
Bubble wrap amzn.to/3g5EatB
Nylon netting or old net curtain amzn.to/3mzoRL2
Towels amzn.to/3a1RJ9F
Soap, water (Soap used: either olive oil soap bar amzn.to/3uDXeDi
or dish wash soap amzn.to/3wP2170 )
Spray bottle amzn.to/2PMBSoG
Half a pool noodle amzn.to/3tcOlQI
or you can use a ribbed pool noodle amzn.to/3wP3nyC
Elastic bands amzn.to/3g21rNg
Glass with a patterned base if you have one
Piece of silk chiffon amzn.to/3taWuVR
Wool amzn.to/3a1ZRab and silk rovings aka tops amzn.to/39YPEvi
Silk Hankies amzn.to/3mDAK2H
Variegated yarn amzn.to/3mB3KrA
Dimensional yarn amzn.to/3mzuM2I
Vinegar amzn.to/2Qcw5bF
Rinsing bowl, bucket or kitchen sink amzn.to/3mKqcig
THE MATERIALS USED TO ECO-PRINT THE FABRIC:
* Nuno felted scarf - semi-dry - in the rinsing vinegar-water
* Vinegar water to soak the plant material - and felt if it is dry amzn.to/2Qcw5bF
* Rust/iron solution - gives dark definition to the eco-prints amzn.to/326E5O0
* Rose leaves and flowers amzn.to/2QeWaXA
* A stick and twine amzn.to/3seX8Ra
* Scissors amzn.to/3wM4cbi and rubber gloves amzn.to/3uHQTH6
* Cling wrap amzn.to/2PMG4oq
* Dye bath made from hibiscus amzn.to/3d4nG34 and onion skins amzn.to/2ODbnkO
I used geranium leaves for the first time in this eco-printing process, but these did not print, although they acted as a resist creating a non-coloured area.
I hope you enjoy "How to Make and Eco-Print a Nuno Felt Scarf".
If you keep watching to the end of the video, you can view some other nuno felted scarves I have made in different colours, with various layouts - and one on a cotton open-weave scarf - to give you some inspiration for your own designs.

Have you done anything that looked more universal? Ie: 2 sided maybe or something larger that when flipped inside out have different colors. Umm you see how military have a green, brownish tones then if in winter can change to the lighter white with accent blownish tones. My ex was military and could get away with most anything mid Eastern looking but.. You know what a Ghillie suit is? It's what snipers wear.. or as little as tossing a mesh net over their head. I thought of a scarf that could be worn with the greens then again in winter. Both able to be tossed over the head to blend in the snowy terrain. Could be sections of an open webbing to view through until needed to target. Maybe silk in ripped pieces or ?? Then over the holes put webbing/mesh .. then wool to meld it together as 1.flip to change colors of wool. The mesh also helps cool in summer yet block wind in winter if using it over head or ?? Make sense? It can be creative..

Wow thank you Isabella! Silk is an amazing addition to felt when you make it, as this gives the lustre to wool which in itself is matt.

I really enjoyed making this scarf. I am thinking of making something similar only leaving the bundle to simmer longer for more definite prints. What do you think? Or would you rather see me make something else?

Lovely quick question. Iron Water? How did you get that. If something you mixed into water what n how much per quart. What could be a good substitute. I'm on the USA in a fairly large city in the south. Thanks in advance.

how long will the print last? I feel it will fade away after couple of washes. Have you experimented it? Thanks
@AannshaJones
@AannshaJones 7 жыл бұрын
Malki Erandi, Hi. This depends on lots of factors including: the strength of the print, what plant material you have used, the type of laundry detergent used, temperature of wash, how often you wash the item and even the amount of strong sunlight it's exposed to. I wouldn't be washing a scarf often and usually scarves are worn when the sun is less intense. With eco-printing, a part of the fun is in experimenting. I have.found even in sunny Australia using regular washes, that tee shirts I've printed last a long time. And when they fade I simply re-print!

Thank you for this video and the great idea for natural dying ;-) You talked abou dipping the leaves and pétales into vinigar but what was the light Brown liquid you dipped in the flower ?? Thanks again I will experiment that for sure . I love hydrangea and will try with that at fall time ;-) TY ! Great spring time ;-)

Manon Baril Hi and thank you for letting me know that this has inspired you! The brown liquid is rust water which gives the prints a darker / more defined look and acts as a mordant.

OK TY !! But what if I don't have rust water . . would tea do ?? Or something else to replace the rust water with ?? Thanks again ;-)
@AannshaJones
@AannshaJones 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Manon, You can make iron water easily enough. Just throw a few rusty nails or iron into a glass jar that has 1 part cleaning vinegar to 2 parts water and leave covered for a couple of weeks. When the solution has turned orangy-brown it is ready to use. However, if you don't want to do that, give tea a go! It does contain tannin which is a natural plant mordant and is used to pre-treat vegetable materials (cotton) before mordanating with aluminium potassium sulfate. I haven't used tea myself, but do try it. As with any dyeing, or eco-printing, it is good practice to write your results in a journal so you can repeat the process if you like it. Printing with plants often gives mixed results, because the leaves will contain different amounts of colour depending on time of year, whether it has rained before collecting the leaves, and even the water that you use, as different areas have varying amounts of minerals in the water, which can affect the results. Do feel free to share your results here so we can all benefit from the wisdom of your experiment, we'd love to hear from you again! :)

Thank you. You could try that. You would need to be aware not to damage the fine thin chiffon or other gauze material you are using.

Hi again! Have you tried Dahlia leaves? Also, stone fruit leaves i.e. plum, apricot, peach etc., gives green, although I think you would probably need to use mordants (like alum and also iron). Ivy leaves will give green too. I would suggest a couple of books on plant dyes - and Jenny Dean or Sasha Duerr do have books on the subject that are worth reading.
