For everyone wondering, going from 75% resistance to 90% is like getting 60% less damage than before. Basic example, you would take 1000 raw damage which gets mitigates by 75% which means you get 250 damage, with 90% mitigation you are at 100 damage left. It's actually huge, since the game is mostly balanced around those 75% mitigation.

There is another, much more secretive function of Glancing Blows. The stronger a hit, the less your armor is worth. Taking 10 x 500 damage is absolutely not equal to a single hit dealing 5000 damage. That will go through your armor like an aura abuser through a T1 map but the 10 small hits will be mitigated by say 50-90% depending on your armor value. By halving the damage of every hit you increase the worth of your armor significantly.

True, also enemies often use some forms of resistance penetrations and Ailments which you both halve in effectiveness aswell. For example, Shaper's barrage of Cold Balls Uses alot of cold pen, but if you convert the taken dmg, you wont be frozen and you wont take as much dmg cause his cold pen is being halved.

@@Chronor007 I used a pathfinder with the reworked Darkscorm bow. Then maxed out my chaos res. I abused that damage conversion from elemental to chaos with Xibiqua Glorious Vanity over point blank. I was able to facetank nearly all of the mechanics at endgameonce I hit 5k life.

Block is rolled as the last thing, so it wont make armour more effective. It would also be over powered if it did :D

Pretty sure that's not how block works, you first take the damage minus the armour mitigation, if you block you take no damage, if you block with glancing blows you take half the damage you didn't mitigate.

TBH, this should be titled "How to make very niche builds tanky" since both examples are very niche to that specific char. If I play a lightning arrow deadeye a lot of the mitigation stuff mentioned is not possible unless I sacrifice a lot of other utility. Capping 90% chaos res on most chars isnt easy, you run two circles which makes it a joke. Needless to say I suppose the idea of what is possible is what counts.

A great thing about Glorious Vanity/Divine Flesh - the one that converts 50% of elemental damage to Chaos - is that the Chaos part won't be affected by Penetration. Bosses like Shaper and Atziri, have big elemental attacks with built in penetration of the appropriate type. So Shaper's Cold Balls have 25% cold Pen. Converting 50% of the Cold-Balls' damage to chaos means that 50% is completely unaffected by that 25% Pen. So if you have 90% CR, and 75% Cold resistence, then you are essentially reducing the damage by 40% Similarly, the "minus player max resists" map mod doesn't affect chaos resist, so again it's an excellent defense against that mod.

For the resistance stuff going from 80% to 90% you take 2 time less. if you take 100 damage, with 80% you take 20 and 90% 10 damage.

Thanks. That was an absolute great perspective on how to approach a character. Looks like you did a hell lot of work on t hose builds. There is just so much to know and tweak around, it feels like an abyss of time investment from which nothing ever comes out. The game is great. Nice graphics, even greater music. Content is a bit redundant for the proportion of customization/build of a character. It feels to me like there is a greater impact of piling numbers rather than having any particular skill at the game play. I don't know what it is I feel exactly but nevertheless, I am not trying to dis the game or anything, I have enjoyed quite many hours of gaming but eventually it's like a learning curve where you reach the climax quick enough and if you want to get any bit more out if it, you need a disproportional amount of time investment and in the end, it all feels so futile :P Enjoy while you still can !

blasphemy temp chains is my all time favorite defense! on a non-occultist, i use Corpsri's body armour which make it applie even to hexproof ennemies and u can even apply enfeeble since it lets u put 2 curses (mine is in either on cwdt or an herald).and yeah, as a base, evasion/ dodge are so fun to play because u can run a lont time without getting hit! nice. anyway. nice vid dude 👍

How do u creafted this chest? I want to try it in the next league. i know i have to craft using the awekener orb. What influence did you leave. For example, do I use the Awakener orb on the warlord chest base and apply it to The Hunter's base or the reverse? After I have the mods I want (less mana cost and resistance to physical damage as chaos damage), is it just using fossils? which fossils are they? I recommend using www.craftofexile.com/ I bought a double influenced base, used perfect fossils to get high quality, crafted more quality to 6 link it easier, then scour and spam Lucent + Pristine + Aberrant fossils until I got the mods I wanted

Just a tip I used. Instead of Witchfire & Rumi's flask I used a Jade and Stibnite. Still had near max block and despair on trigger wand, but was able to get 30k evasion with flasks up. I also used a Thread of Hope to allocate Phase Acrobatics and the block nodes down that way. Playing a tanky ED character is one of the most fun builds in the game. Thanks for the great video and explanation, really helping newer players EDIT: Just watched the second half. Your bow character is amazing. Really great build and I always wanted to try out Scourge Arrow. The defensive stacking is right up my alley.

I've used it on a coc vd bow char a couple of leagues ago, with precision- flask charge on crit and the life flask recovery every 3 seconds, you can have it permanently, and that's about 800+life per second with minimal investment. I still died to one shots, but it was great.

Sorry for the noob question, but could you explain to me how evasion with block works? If I have a toon with 75% chance to evade physical attack damage, and 25% chance to block it, does that mean the 75% chance to evade is calculated first, and the 25% that gets through has a 75% chance to hit? All I know is that it does NOT mean you have a 100% chance to avoid physical attack damage.

Evasion degrades with each hit evaded stacking block on gives you a shot of blocking the hit that gets through after your evade degrades and when you block it counts as getting "hit" so your evade refreshes and starts the degrade all over from scratch.

You can roll chance to blind on hit on abyss jewel, and use Dread banner too (nearby enemies have 20%reduced accuracy, and even more with CWDT+Enfeeble

I d rather used vigilant stike+fortify+duration (all 20q) on weapon swap for fortify. Around 40 seconds fortify with a jewel, and you can have other anointment and flask. And what about Kintsugi chest, for more budget option but still great defense. Great video, great builds

"How to make any build tanky", takes 2 builds that are already built tanky (and invented by other people), es on block kiloava ed trickster and divine flesh darkscorn scourge arrow with hardened scars I literally saw 2 days ago on reddit the same build just better because it had also warcries... Yes, you can make those tanky, same as you can make necro tanky, or gladiator, or champion, now I was looking for answers how to make builds that are innately squishy tanky, well good luck with that. Builds like iceshot deadeye or soul mantle spell totem hiero, they're kinda squishy (totem has mom, a bit of block and curse immunity, iceshot deadeye is pure glass cannon). Once I wanted to play ignite elementalist, but gave up because the build had no way to get any defenses, only thing it had was buffs from golems and they die all the time unless you play dedicated golem minion build. So yeah... the title is misleading, tl:dr is play builds that are already designed tanky and give up on the rest...

Im sure every build can build tanky, its just a question of how much you want to sacrifice. Ignite elementalist could have easily gotten 3/4 endurance charge through minimum endurance charge craft at jewellery or weapon swap with endurance charge shield fortify with shield charge or hardened scar anoint, MoM, eldritch battery and devouring diadem, Surging vitality for regen Defensive flask Block Divine flesh with 3 node chaos cluster jewel for chaos resist Pretty sure theres more option and most of these option can be stacked together.

the fact is many don't explain how and why it works. This vid for me wasn't something I didn't know but more like a reminder. Yes, he may copy the builds but one is to hear someone explain it and another is to look on Poe.ninja and try to figure it by yourself. Let me give u an example. A few leagues ago I played Bane and when I found my name on Poe.ninja, my dps was 300k while the top 10 was 1.5mil. The thing was most of my gear, around 90% was the same (was missing a Shavonne +1 all gems chest and a Watcher`s Eye) but these 2 items, I didn't believe will make my damage 5x better, so I didn't understand what the hell was going on. The answer came after I literally PM all the players in top untile one of them answer me, saying. Chaos gems have very high dmg scaling, you must push your Bane gem level above 30 (mine was around 24 and his was around 32 if I remember correctly). Now, how the fuk should I have this little info figured it out myself? And it was true, just a small change and pushed my Bane to 27 had busted my dps around 1mil. The point is, no matter how good you, some minor things will be missed and if there is no one out there to explain it, people won't get it, that's why I like this video and I don't agree with whit your statement.

Don't follow guides that are barebones pastebins and follow ones that explain the choices behind the whole setup (gear, abilities, passives etc.) In most cases if a new player has a question about something the good guides will have active author and / or community of players following that build that will help as well. Avoid guides that were made months / years ago and are no longer updated / abandoned. P.S. A chaos occultist guide that was created 2,5 years ago so before even bane existed, but it's updated to include bane: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1963181 Very exhaustive. Following a well written and maintained guide will also help when you can't afford to copy pasta 1:1 these 300ex+ poe.ninja builds, since good guides will have several gear levels from league start through budget to min max. I think these content creators who write them deserve more credit than they're getting.

If you crafted every single piece of your Pathfinder's gear, let me tell you are the luckiest guy in the world, or I am the more unfortunate maybe ... I had to craft myself also my gear in delirium for my scourge arrow pathfinder because basically there wasn't any decent gear at sale, only I found pretty overpriced ones with mediocre rolls and stats (ofc this is because no one played pathfinder last league). So I had to spend more than 10ex per piece trying to get something that worth with fossils. When I got some mods that worth, and I did an ex slam, the only I had is ALWAYS rarity, or T9 life, or t9 evasion and so (ofc all items I used had ilvl85+). So I finish with the same mediocre gear that I would bought in trade for half price ....

If you are already that close to capped block, NO WAY rumi's is the best flask to use. get like an armor or a phasing or some other mitigation flask over rumis, an extra 3 block chance or so is not even close to worth.

@@daath912 Ok Well first of all, lethal pride makes it so he still takes 1/2 damage even on block so all those values you mentioned should be halved. And second, with tempest shield, which he should always have up, he's at 72% chance to block attack and 74% chance to block spell damage, so rumi's gives him a net 3% chance to block attack damage and 1% chance to block spell damage. 100% not worth in any way.

@@daath912 Yea for sure. And yes you do still need to half the values bc math. For instance, you said at 50% block a 10% increase lets you take 20% less damage. In this case however, since you still take half damage upon block, 50% block only results in 25% damage mitigation, meaning you are still taking 75% damage. increase that to 60% block and you are mitigating 30% of incoming damage, meaning you still take 70%, which is the equivalence of only about 7% less damage, not 20% less damage like it would have been if you were taking no damage on block. I was actually mistaken earlier though, the math actually makes it so a 10% increase from 50 to 60 actually mitigates LESS then half of the 20% it otherwise would be if you were blocking all the damage on a block, not exactly half like I said.

next time show some gameplay... that pathfinder with pure evasion doesnt sound tanky to me, with 5.6k life and 75% lightning resist you just have to take 1 good hit (hand of god for example) to get a free ticket to the town. Evasion + dodge ≠ tanky , its like saying "if you want to stop dying, stop getting hit by the enemy" or even better "how to stop dying: never leave the city" :/ "How yo make any build tanky: get dodge, block, cap your resistanses and get as much hp/es u can get" there, 25 minutes of video in one sentence.

I'm not sure you've watched the video, but he also has permanent Fortify from using flasks, Aspect of the Crab, CwDT Temp Chains, 31% mitigation of all physical damage from hits via damage shift, and 30% mitigation of all elemental damage via damage shift. That's a lot, actually-much more than most builds have starting on that side of the tree. Sure, you _can_ do even better as a Pathfinder (e.g. using Stone or another form of permablind, an EC generator ring, some more involved CwDT setups, even more damage shift to elemental/chaos via Lightning Coil, stacking sources of reduced damage taken, and so on) but not _much_ better without crippling the clearspeed. He hit a very good balance there, and the methods he chose work well together.

I understand the mechanics but even than this video is useless to me. And thats with most of this kind of videos. Some builds are not focused on shield. This is an OP Shield/ES/Block build from a person who has seems to play 24/7 and has all the chaos and exalt to effort all the stuff needed. The main problem is that ppl who only play a few hours a wek wont come over a certain point in the game that about L80 and tier 5 maps... the reason for this is a lot of instant dieing without knowing why (because of no logs). I also run a es tank in this league but with no shield because i use two clayshaper i also have CI to prevent useless chaos damge which is way to op in my opinion. But I still die every second delve run and there are only monster L70 in depth 48 and my character is already 86... the more they programm the game the more usless its become for casual players... but this isnt the only game who only design and develop for 24/7 players... so... maybe time to go on and switch to another game... :(... balance in this one is totally bullshit

How ur dying at l70 48? I mean there's nothing at that depth - get all res capped it's like 5c investment, keep bleed-chill/freeze-ignite-curse-flasks constantly up, at least 4k HP pool, some damage to be able just run and 1-2 shot blue mobs and you'r good to go
