How To Make ANY Melody in DESMOS
~
This video is my submission for 3Blue1Brown's Summer of Math Exposition Pi (SoME Pi). This video is my very in-depth tutorial for making any type of music in Desmos Graphing Calculator. I talk about how to make melodies, harmonies, and everything else in between. By the end of this video you should be an expert at creating music in Desmos. Please show me any of what you create. Happy Graphing!

I've just started making the bad piggies theme! I used to make music in Desmos before tone was added but didn't really understand how tone worked. Really useful video!

This is really cool! I knew you could create music with the "Hear Graph" feature but that requires a giant equation and its also inconsistent with how you the graph centered. This is a far superior method that I will use if I ever find a need to learn this. Good luck growing your channel! :D

is there a way that you could find away to get more control over the exact tone of the notes in the octave? There's some out of tune notes. Other than that this is an amazing design!

All of the notes come from the equation I showed, and putting any number into the tone() function should give any note. One small thing I notice, however, is that because of that, Desmos is sometimes slightly off-pitch, especially with very high or very low notes. Hope this helps!

Hey, i have a question, how can you make the pause between notes shorter?
@BrainOfAPenguin
@BrainOfAPenguin 3 ай бұрын
Basically, you have to add complexity to your note lists by making them larger and then speeding up the whole song with ticker. What this means is that instead of putting four E4 and then 1 rest, you need to do eight E4 and then 1 rest. Then you need to double the speed of the whole song using the ticker tool. You double the speed by halving the number in the ticker spot (ie instead of doing t->t+1 every 200 ms, do t->t+1 every 100 ms). Hope this helps!

I don't know anything about musical terms like octave,chord,tone,note, etc. is this common for all musical instruments. All i know about is sound and its technical terms like frequency, pitch,amplitude,timeperiod etc. can i learn about those terms as mentioned before without any prior knowledge and where do i learn those technical terms ? Is this same for all musical instruments like ukelele,piano etc. how to contact you ? Do you like to teach me through gmeet ? If so, i will pay for the class

These terms are pretty basic when learning any instrument, except for maybe 'chord', which doesn't apply to some instruments. There's probably a lot of sources you can find online by searching up 'music theory'. What you already know about pitch and time signature should help you a lot, though, when understanding the new concepts. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to me with my channel email, which you can find in the channel description. Hope this helps!

2:00 okay, why not just have another list for the length of the notes and a 3rd for the rests?
@BrainOfAPenguin
@BrainOfAPenguin 3 ай бұрын
Thats actually another really smart way to do it, and it scales better for bigger projects with more complicated rhythms. For me though, most of what I did was on the smaller scale and it was fine to do it in one list

@@BrainOfAPenguinYeah. What you did is nice. But you had like 5 minutes of the video explaining the way the notes are split up. To be fair, it makes a lot of sense, since long notes are just sequences of short notes strung together.
