How to Make Baby Formula for the Day 🍼 | 24 Hours | First Time Mum UK
Hi guys,
I just wanted to share how I make formula for my baby over a 24 hour period. We use the Cow & Gate milk powder and the Tommee Tippee Anti-Colic bottles. I batch make the ones for during the day and then use the Tommee Tippee Prep Machine for the night. This is just what works really well for us so I wanted to share.

Abtaclub says the same thing as you That you can prepare the bottles and store them in fridge for 24hrs And once you warm them in warm water to room temperature or perfect enough test on your wrist you have to use within 2 hours. Thank you for your video 🙏

Yeah, I’ve always known it to be safe. Maybe there are some new guidelines out that say it’s not recommended anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️ . I know a lot of people microwave the bottles to heat them up which is something I don’t feel comfortable, that’s not recommended either but they still do it and you’ll find a lot of these people who say you shouldn’t pre-make bottles will microwave a bottle if they ever have to. Honestly, I think just do what works for you. There are so many do’s and don’ts with parenting, I don’t think there is a right and wrong. As long as our children grow up happy and healthy. Thank you though, makes me feel better about having done it this way cuz I was getting some backlash for it.

Hi, you have to descale the kettles regularly to get rid of the limescale build up. It happens to every kettle due to the hard water but it's more noticeable in clear kettles because you can see into them. Sorry, I didn't get the last part. Leave the kettle to stand for 30mins after it has finished boiling.

As mentioned in the video, if you keep it out, it is only safe for 2 hours but formula can be kept up to 24hours as long as it is refrigerated. Read the part that says "Use Quickly, Store Safely" www.cdc.gov/nutrition/infantandtoddlernutrition/formula-feeding/infant-formula-preparation-and-storage.html

Haha You just got to do what you’re comfortable with. I feel funny about using the prep machine day and night 😂. I always worry about the pipes being clean on them, that’s why they’re so controversial. So yeah, I stick to just using it at night so I’m not using it as often and causing a buildup. I clean/sterilise it properly every month and descale it every 4 months (before the light comes on). So far it’s been fine but yeah, still worry about using it in the day as well 😬. I see people microwaving their bottles, making milk with room temperature water (below 70C), using bottled water, not sterilising the bottles! All sorts, things I wouldn’t dream of doing but they’ll always say their babies are fine too. I’m sure in a lot of other countries around the world, their hygiene around feeding baby is not the same and most babies are fine. We’re just extra cautious which isn’t a bad thing.

Hi, thank you that was a very useful video for me (a first time mum to be). Where did you purchase the Anti colic bottles from and did you buy as a set with the steriliser or individually? I have seen them as a complete set with an electric steriliser and individually too so wanted to know which is worth getting. Would you recommend them? I have seen mixed reviews about them. Thank you x
@RuksanaAhmed

Hi, I am so glad you've found the video helpful. I purchased the anti-colic bottles from he Tommee Tippee website. I got a pack of 4 (2 big, 2 small) for £20. I didn't buy the set with the anti-colic bottles because I was gifted the set with the normal bottles. That came with the electric steriliser, bottle warmer, insulated bottle bags etc. Personally, I've not really used any of it because my baby has bottles at room temperature and the bottle warmer takes longer to warm the bottle up then hot water in a jug. I've used the steriliser a few times though, it's good, I like it. It's great for hotel stays where you don't have access to a microwave, but needs descaling very often which puts me off using it as much at home. I tend to use a microwaveable steriliser at home. I love the anti-colic bottles, they really helped us with Diyan's gas. We didn't get any issues with leaking (you just have to make sure to put it all back together properly and screw it on tight). I will be using them again for baby #2 hopefully. I've heard good things about the MAM bottles but I don't like that they give you 8 bottles with only 4 teats 😕.
@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
Also, you can always take the microwaveable steriliser for any stays in a hotel and use it for cold water sterilisation (milton) instead so personally I don’t think the kit is worth it. Just buy the bottles and a microwave or steriliser. Hope that helps!
@rahbid121
@rahbid121 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if you've had your baby yet. If you did congratulations. I personally prefer the mams bottles, I feel it's very good for babies with colic. No steriliser is needed. It can be sterilised in the microwave for a couple of mins. And it's done. No faffing around, no huge amount of washing. Plus, the striliser takes up quite a bit of space. Quite pernickety, I feel. Having said that, not everyone finds the same thing convenient. Hopefully, you get to find the perfect ones for you.

Is there a reason you don't use the Tommee Tippee machine all day instead of prepping bottles and putting them in the fridge?
@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
I prefer not to use the machine all day and night due to increasing the build up of limescale faster so I prefer to use this method during the day. The other way you can do it is to keep some cooled boiled water in the fridge. Make your bottle with half boiling water and then once the powder is mixed, add half of the cooled water in the fridge to make it the perfect temperature to feed straight away

The formula milk contains the good bacteria which helps in the baby’s gut so not a good idea to kill them. Secondly they also contain proteins which can break when heated. It’s always safer to follow instructions on the box. Please pay attention to the ingredients and the temperature they require.
@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
If you watch my video I make sure to say to wait 30mins after the kettle has boiled to allow the water to get to 70C which is what they recommend. This is warm enough to kill the bad bacteria only. The nutrients in the formula are still retained if refrigerated. It does state on the NHS website that "stored formula should be consumed within 24hrs" which I have always stood by.

Stored in the refrigerator 24 hours or 48 hours I've heard these two different numbers throughout which one is it . I would be using Similac advance with iron I will be making bottles four days worth of using maybe even two days worth if it can stall 48 I know not to go beyond that I just don't know it can be stored for 24 or 48 Hours

How many scoops per ounce ? So if its 2 ounces how many scoops?
@RuksanaAhmed

Hi, it's different for different kinds of formula so you will have to read the tin. Most in the UK are 1 scoop per ounce. The Cow and Gate we used is 1 scoop per ounce.
@fariakhan7310

If you are using Cow and gate stage 2 formula in packet form then for every 2 ounces there is one spoon and if want to made 3 ounce then 1 and half as the scoop in packet form is bigger and equal to 2 spoons of the normal formula. If possible use cow and gate tins

Thought u put the water first
@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
Yes you would if you were using the bottle your making it in to measure the water as well. As you can see I used a separate bottle with no powder in it to measure the correct amount of water and then added that to the powder so that if kept my measurements right still. And then for the last bottle, I put the water in first. The prep machine will always deliver the right amount of water so it doesn’t matter for that tbh. The reason I like to put the powder in first and use another bottle to measure is because when you put the hot water in first, the steam from the water makes the powder stick to the spoon and it gets very gunky and almost impossible to measure the correct amount of powder. Do what works for you.

@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is water first powder second but I measure my water put in a separate bottle before adding it to the powder to make sure I am adding the correct amount of water. According to the NHS, the water needs to be 70 degrees Celsius to ensure the bacteria in the milk is killed when making the bottle. The bottle can then be cooled before feeding baby.

This is dangerous advice I work with young children and you shouldn’t prepare formula in advance. You can have the water pre prepared but never mixed with the powder. It even says so on the formula tins
@RuksanaAhmed
@RuksanaAhmed Жыл бұрын
This worked for us and our family. I had heard it can be stored in the fridge for 24hrs so that’s what I did and we’ve had no issues. The reason I posted this way is because it even says on the nhs website that if made up formula is stored in the fridge, use witching 24hrs. www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/formula-milk-questions/ section titled “what if I need to transport a made up feed”. Of course if I found it causing my baby trouble I would never have continued to do it nor would I have made a video showing what I do. I’m just sharing. I know a lot of people who warm their milk in the microwave which is also dangerous advice but they advise it cuz it’s always worked for them. I made the conscious decision not to do that so I would hope people would research into either situation themselves and decide for themselves.

While I can understand it worked for you it’s not the recommended advice and I believe you have slightly misunderstood the information. The website that you have provided states that you can store it for 24hrs in the fridge but that’s only recommended if it’s not possible for you to prepare the bottle fresh. They still recommend transporting water and powder for feeds separately and mixing when needed (while out) or preparing fresh, over pre mixing feeds.

Well mixed formula out only lasts 2hrs hence the advice of carrying water and formula. I'm not advising anyone to do it, I am just sharing what we've done. Everyone has the option to research anything before they go ahead with whatever they watch.

This is really outdated advice. Also formula goes off after 2 hours so waiting 2 hours before putting it in the fridge is really bad. No formula should be made in advance and stored. I've had 3 kids and even 14 years ago it was a massive no no. I use a breville hot cup set to 6oz straight into a nuby rapid cool add powder, shake, wait 2 mins and done its the perfect temp. Then wash out rapid cool and pop in cold water Milton to sterilise. Much less faff than a perfect prep with no filters :)

Storing made up formula for up to 24 hours is still mentioned on the NHS website. Formula should be offered within 2 hours but if that formula isn’t given, you have up to 2 hours before it goes off to refrigerate it so it then lasts up to 24 hours. www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/formula-milk-questions/

I have looked into this and it really does depend how you want to look at it. It’s a method that used to be recommended by the NHS and is still on their website as safe to do occasionally. It’s also still considered as completely safe in America. I have tried the flask method also however I don’t they maintain the water at the correct 70C (which kills the bacteria in the formula) throughout the night or when out so that doesn’t sound like a safe or healthy option either but you seem to think that it is. As mothers, I don’t think we would ever do anything to intentionally harm our babies and if I could see it was affecting him I would have stopped and would never have recommended it as an option.
@Hottyeyez1
@Hottyeyez1 8 ай бұрын
Of course we do not want to harm our kids but I had always used the flask method especially if I have to out during the day however, yes, my doctor did inform that I can make a few bottles for the night as long as I leave it cool in the room temperature. I guess we keep on learning ;)

Tbh, I found taking a flask and formula out too much to carry so I just bought the ready-made bottles when out. But yes, a freshly made bottle is safe to drink within 2 hours if left out so as long as you refrigerate it before the 2 hours it should be fine. I found an hour after being made it has cooled down enough. I always kept one bottle out ready to feed baby after an hour of making and then the rest I would refrigerate. Like I said, we never had issues. I never used this method when on holiday though cuz the electricity would always go and then the milk would go off. People do all sorts. I know people who use bottled water and mix the formula with that without boiling (need to check label on minerals before making formula with it) and others who warm the milk up in a microwave.

NOOOOOO.. NEVER store the prepared powder milk in freeze.. Not recommended in official websites or in the pack.. (only allowed for 200ml ready to feed bottles). So in urgency this powder formula becomes useless as a hungry baby can not wait for 45 mins or so to feed (30-35 mins boiling+ cooling + ~10 mins sterilization etc ...)
