My mum made made Balm of Gilead salve every year. When she passed away in 2004 I kept all the jars of liquid that had not yet been made into a salve. SEVENTEEN years later I am still using it and it smells divine.

I just looked it up out of curiosity. Do you mean the song “There is a Balm in Gilead”? There are some beautiful choral arrangements :)

If your oil separates when you mix your bees wax, it means that your infused oil has lots of water in it, which is not very good as your salve would go rancid quickly. You need to dry your buds a little bit so there isn’t so much moisture in it when you infuse the poplar buds, or you need to evaporate the moisture out by infuse it for a lot longer in higher heat. Normally beeswax and oils never separate as they’re both oils unless you add water into the mixture.

Oooh, good tip! I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't stirred them. I've always done it for good measure, but now I wonder if there was any extra water in there. Will definitely keep this in mind for future batches! Fortunately, no rancidity in my batch yet.

I figured out what happened thanks ti your tip! At some point along the process I spilled a littler water into my oil and I guess I wasn’t able to siphon it all off. The good news is, my balm from that year is still going strong! :)

The Name Balm of Gilead comes directly from the Bible not from Dungeons and Dragons. Jeremiah 8: 21-22 Since my people are crushed, I am crushed; I mourn, and horror grips me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people? Genesis 37:23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe-the ornate robe he was wearing- 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. 25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt. Genesis 43:11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift-a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. There is an old hymn about the Balm . kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH-ce3SChreAmJI
