Bath Bombs are considered a cosmetic product so you have to follow FDA guidelines when making them. This includes the colorants you use in them. There are 3 common types of colorants used in bath bombs: Micas, Lakes, and Dyes.
Micas are not regulated by the FDA, but if you want to use them make sure you read the description from your supplier's website to make sure they are bath bomb safe. If it doesn't specifically say that it is bath bomb safe or not, check to see if it is lip safe or not. If it isn't lip safe, its is NOT bath bomb safe. There are 2 colors of mica that you should stay away from and those are blue and green micas. Also if you plan on using a good amount of mica to color your bath bombs, you have to add polysorbate 80 to your recipe so that the micas won't stain your bath tub. You must use polysorbate 80 if you plan to use Lake colorants too.
My preferred way of coloring my bath bombs are with dyes. Dyes are water soluble and you don't have to use an emulsifier to prevent staining. When looking for dyes to color your bath bombs, make sure they are FD&C batch certified dyes. This only pertains to people who are planning on selling bath bombs.
