How to make beats by micro-chopping records

In this video I talk about micro-chopping - taking tiny parts of records and arranging them to make hip-hop beats. This logic should hopefully apply to all types of samplers and is quite an old-skool technique but its still just as fun on modern gear that has larger memory! Give it a try and see what sounds you can get.

Thats how I used to chop samples before I knew anything about chopping and all that. One of my first samplers was a yamaha su-200 and it worked really well for that type of sample chopping. Had a killer filter on it to imo.

Dope man. I like to make beats the same way on the 404. I sometimes reverse a few chops and vary the length of some too, playing micro chops with more lengthy chops in the arrangement. Great choice of samples too man, it's dope when the chops play so well together.

The biggest driver of microchopping is that back then they couldn’t digitally isolate a voice sample from a drum sample etc (not easily anyway) so you had to take the voice with the kick with the snare. It takes all of it and rearranges it in a beat. J Dilla was the master of it. See: “Don’t Cry”

@elmowilcox
@elmowilcox Жыл бұрын
@@kirankrishnaswamy8088 surely can. It’s just a Sampler-sequencer plus an audio source of your choosing...turntable if you wanna go full old school. Chop out the drums you like, taking whatever goes along with them. Record/Play/Stop recording. Tap sample buttons in different orders until it makes your friends’ heads nod. You’re effectively turning an existing song into a soundboard to be played.

Great video as always. I thought that you were going more micro then that. I mean, that's regular sampling for me chopping notes like that. For me getting breaks or loop is "macro-sampling". :) Micro-sampling for me is sampling smaller bits of sounds. A friend of mine (DSTR) did all his albums sampling each small sounds between drums and rearranged the small bits into beats. All that with an MPC1000. The good thing about this is nothing is unusable but the bad is that it's so much work to make a beat. I think that's what finally made him move on. You can still hear his stuff from a couple a years ago at Neferiu record (I won't post links because of youtube...).
@spvidz

Interesting man yeah guess you can take it as far as you want, for me this is very different from the style that i ususally chop. I'm usually sampling bass note to bass note in a progression. I think I saw a video of Dilla doing a similar thing where he chopped in between drums. Like you say very time consuming! Maybe fun for a beat but a whole album would be painful lol

Two ways this video could be better: 1. We need to hear the song you sampled so we'd get an idea of what to listen for. 2. You'd need to explain whether you'd chop the samples using adsr or ahd or one-shot sampling and why and whether there are circumstances where you do each. Other than that, not a bad tutorial.

One thing I get stuck on is expanding into bridges, choruses, etc. I come up with dope loops, bring different instruments in and out, and play with effects. But, I need some clarity and structure around the process of going from having a loop, to having an entire song, so that it doesn't get stale after a few bars.

You CANNOT sample music without permission, no matter how short or long the sample is. Copyright is copyright. And if the sample is recognizable (hell, even if it isn't recognizable), you're using another person's intellectual property in order to construct or enhance your own. You may have heard of "fair use," a copyright provision that permits you to use 10, 15 or 30 seconds of music without copyright obligation. That is, you understand that you can use a short section of a song without paying a fee. Yet, you're wondering how exactly this works. The short answer is that it doesn't work. Samples are an embedded part of hip-hop culture. Appropriation is part of the production process. ... But regardless of the arguable artistry of the sample, it's legal matter baby. There's always somebody who owns the rights to the original composition and/or recording, and those somebodies will be looking to get paid. Copyright protection can last for a very long time. ... The duration of copyright protection depends on when the song was created: Songs created on or after January 1, 1978, are protected for 70 years after the death of the individual author.
