With the toilet paper tubes, they're easier to work with if you flatten them, creating a sharp crease, opening the tube and flattening again, with the first creases lined up. You get square pots instead of round, and can fit more of them in your tray or bin, too.

In India, we make cups and plates from the large, dry leaves of the Sal tree (Shorea Robusta). The cups and plates are very readily available for very little. You can just as easily put soil in and let your seedlings burst out. Then you can easily bury the entire cup. You can also roll up and fold the plates to make longer / wider, biodegradable pots that can also be buried directly when the seedling is ready. These leaves are not only 100% biodegradable but also a great source of food for the young roots of your seedling!

@@chitrauttamsingh825 late to the party but still.... You could just find the tree pluck required amount of leaves and make cups out of them or you could also use banana leaves too (there are many tutorials on yt) Also i think if you're in india you could ask for “pattal cup” if somewhere else in the world you could ask for leaf cups or something along that . :)

Thx, for the video of multiple ides...love the tube pots! Just a quick note for US viewers... I used egg creates for years with outstanding success. They absorb excess moisture and wick it away,preventing damp off..or once seedlings are established they allow access to the extra moisture when the soil becomes too dry ,helping to prevent wilt. Edit: poke a small hole in the bottom of each egg cell bf filling... excess roots will find their way to the moist cardboard below and are easily detached and planted,giving your crop a boost. However, now that bio engineered trees are being used ( grown to reduce the tough substance that prolongs the process of turning pulp into paper) the egg cartons mold long bf the seedlings can mature enough to withstand it or to be up potted. Heavy sigh.. Also never allow any paper material to remain above ground, it will wick away ground moisture. Live and Learn. Happy gardening!

Great idea! So I don't have to by the pots. Just want to say, I used a little tin instead of a jar. About 5.6fl tin coconut milk 😉 the advantage of using a tin is that you can press the folded paper at the bottom against the edge of the tin. The bottom of the paper pot will be more strong and les wobble.

I have a tip I use egg shells to start my seeds and set them in the egg carton so as not to disrupt the roots I have had good success with the method. Just be careful to crack the egg just towards the top. The shell will decompose into the soil, you plant has an extra boost and all is well with the world.

From my experience- Newspaper pots work really well! You don't have to be fussy about making them- just roll the paper and smash the bottom flat while it's still around the tube you used to roll it up. I'm a little dubious of the paper towel tubes until I see the follow up video of the plants actually growing. I've found the egg cartons to be a bad idea and they never worked out for me. The plants sprouted OK ( but the dry cardboard wicks moisture out of the soil), and the roots never penetrated the paper egg carton- so I had to clumsily scoop them out and transplant by hand. So I'd say - either roll the newspaper, or reuse your old ( or scrounged up) pots. The plastic pots will last for years. Sometimes you can buy used ones from a nirsery- but I'd wash/bleach them before I used them at home.

I had the same idea, because I did not want to spend $ on seed starting pots. About a month ago, I started my seeds in newspaper, paper towel and toilet rolls pots. All handmade. Today as I was trying to transplant some of my plants found out that all those "paper pot" either rotted and desintegrated AND had very tiny white WORMS. I suppose they come from the paper material. Some (a lot) of the seeds have not germinated at this moment, its been longer than a month I suspect they might not. It is a fantastic idea to recycle, but seeds are pretty expensive and not worth the chance to use paper to pot them in.
@GrowVeg8 жыл бұрын
The pots can sometimes break down before they are planted. They do need careful handling when you plant them out. I find the toilet roll pots are sturdier, though still need gentle handling. I've never had tiny white worms. I wouldn't imagine they'd have come from the paper or cardboard, probably an external source. Sorry that you're having problems with them and that so many seeds haven't yet germinated. I hope there's enough time to make further sowings.

I tried both the toilet paper tube and egg carton tricks last year. They both grew mold & the tubes were actually growing mushrooms on the outside. Willing to try again as I've collected them, but would appreciate your thoughts. Zone 6b so have some leeway to await your reply with thanks. PS Had them in a sunny window.
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
I would use tubers and cartons for quick growing and/or sturdy seedlings. The toilet paper tubes worked really well for me when growing beans, which germinate quickly and are very sturdy. Yes, the paper sometimes gets mould, but this rarely affects the seedlings. I tend to peel away the paper at planting though, just to keep things neat. The paper then gets tossed onto the compost pile.
@FloorSugar3 жыл бұрын
The mold won't hurt them, and the mushrooms generally die off once you plant them again 👍

Roughly how fast do various bags decompose? If I wanted to create 3-4 paper pots for a no-transplant system, how thick and how big would each pot have to be in the soil?

Newspaper pots would decompose pretty quickly - probably within 2-3 weeks once planted. The toilet tube rolls would take longer - maybe a couple of months.
