I'd say optional for if you made it out using cement alone then you would most likely end up with a heavier pot that probably won't give that natural look of old bricks, I think. Then again when you think how bricks are made they're not just pure cement. There has got to be some other bonding agents and foam here is quite light and works fine just like sand.
