How things cycle around! I am teaching book binding and found your site today. I'm going to have my students watch your video. You're still teaching me things. Thanks!

Great to hear from you! I am happy to hear these are helpful. Just be sure the mixture is well mixed. If you have any "clumps" you can strain them through a fine cloth or paint strainer. Stay in touch and stay well! THANKS for writing:)

Strange enough, I found your previous video to learn how to hydrate plant based celluloses. But I also love calligraphy and tome making so I'm really happy I discovered your channel. Thanks for the video!

What kinds of paper can you use for this purpose?
@jaescala4 жыл бұрын
Hello Riccardo. I made this video about 3 years ago. I am pretty sure that I used Yasutomo Simi Painting paper. I bought that since it is sold in long roll. My choice is thin to medium weight traditional Japanese kozo or mulberry fiber paper. Japanese style papers are sold in a range of prices. I use what I can afford. I prefer to use one sheet of paper to cover the cloth. You can use more than one sheet and place them side to side. I hope this is helpful. -Jim

I tried this today but the paper can easily be pulled apart from the fabric once dry. It seems the MC paste is to weak to bond to the fabric?
@jaescala4 жыл бұрын
Please realize I have not seen your project. I can think of a number of factors. One factor may be the amount of MC in the mixture. Not enough MC powder may be the problem. Also, what type of paper are you using to attach to the cloth. Feel free to send me a message directly at jim.escalante@gmail.com and include a photo is you like. I will try to help resolve the issue. Best, -Jim

Could I use tissue paper instead of Japanese paper?
@jaescala6 жыл бұрын
I have never tried it. I would like to know your results if you try it. I use Japanese paper since it is strong and holds up well when you put the paste on it. I fear that tissue paper will rip once I cover it with the paste. It might be possible to find thicker tissue.

Jim Escalante the tissue paper I’ve been using it the one you get in a fabric store for making clothes patterns with~ each pack come‘s with quite a few sheets and all sheets are massive ~ one pack lasts a long time ~ and cheap to buy, it’s stronger than the normal tissue paper from say a card shop!! So far it’s never ripped on me~ but then I always go just a little gentle with the laying on the fabric section ~ and now I’ve found using your glue gives me more time to shift and relay if needed!! I don’t know what it’s called where you are but here packet has Dressmakers Pattern Tissue Paper! Hope you can get it to try ~ if not let me know and I could send you it in mail okay

Good think to know! I see a trip to the fabric store in my near future! thanks!

Jim Escalante welcome ~ I’ve also now tried it with the tissue paper you use to wrap gifts with ~ and it works good too, and it you don’t want the mess of using glue ~ you can get a product on the market called ‘Heat’n’Bond UltraHold’ which you iron on your fabric at silk/nylon setting ~peel of backing ~ then iron on tissue or Japanese paper!

Hi! I realize that this video is 7 years old. It's still useful! Hopefully, you're still checking messages. Would you please tell me, is MC the same type of glue that you use to glue buckram to the book board?

Where can I get methycellulose?

Hello Mindy. Are you in the United States? Lineco is a brand that is sold in many art supply stores. I have not used that brand but I trust it would work as well as mine. I bought mine on line several years ago from Talas, a book binding supplier in Brooklyn, NY. It lasts a long time. Happy binding!-Jim

Jim Escalante Yes. I am in Springfield, MO. I will see if I can find the brand you mentioned. Thank you.

What a small world. I lived in Springfield from 1981 till 1989. It might easier to buy it on line. warm regards-Jim

Jim Escalante I thought you'd lived here but didn't know when. I'll order online. Thank you.

Running your hands over damp fabric stretches the fabric. Better to just dampen it and lay the paper over it. If you dampen it and wait a minute the fabric will adhere to the surface beneath without the aid of your hand stretching it
