You need a mat, but maybe you can find a way to do without a mat with Cricut Joy and Maker 3.

That is the same question I have. Why do they choose to use HTV or Iron-On instead of just normal vinyl?

@@s0rr3lthe iron-in vinyl bonds to the paper, whereas regular vinyl can be peeled off and reapplied to something else if needed
