You already know what happens when you drop dry ice into water, but what happens to the water itself when you do? And what would happen if someone tried to drink it? Have you ever seen dry ice drinks before? In this video we're making a big batch of all kinds of carbonated drinks and they taste amazing! Wondering how to make carbonated drinks at home? Think you have what it takes to make homemade soda with dry ice? We’ve seen experiments where you can make homemade soda pop, but we wanted to know if it was possible at home, if it’s easy, and if it tastes good. Grant Thompson has done some cool experiments in the past and in this video, we're just experimenting if it is possible to make great tasting carbonated drinks on our own. We dive into the chemistry of dry ice. Hopefully this gives you an idea as to whether or not you can make this at home.
This interesting homemade dry ice experiment is perfect for those wanting to try some cool experiments with this cool element: dry ice drinks, how to make carbonated water, carbonated drinks, how to make carbonated ice, how to make carbonated drinks, homemade carbonated drinks that taste good, how to make dry ice, how to carbonate water, carbonated ice cream, how to make soda, dry ice experiments, DIY soda, DIY soft drinks, and at home experiments.
If you want to test something creative and entertaining or do an activity such as: science experiment, STEM project, STEM science experiment, science fair project, science fair experiment, or a fun weekend project...watch the video to learn more.

Fizzy drinks is one thing. How about trying to make some fizzy fruit? Put different fruits into a cooler with some dry ice ( no water) and wrap it up really tight with plastic wrap so it forces the carbonation into the fruit. I've heard of people doing it and it's supposed to taste amazing.

Ozz that is not technically true. Orange juice is pressed and though the oranges have the skin on the skin doesn't get to the juice
@libbyfanaccount4609

Ozz juiced. Not blended. The orange peel doesn't come out in the peel. If you blend it with the peel, the peel becomes one with the "juice."

Ozz the skin itself doesn't the juice inside the skin does. If you don't believe me try a bought juice, juice some oranges yourself and then blend some oranges. Do a taste test and you will find out the difference

To properly carbonate your drinks, you have to put them under pressure. Otherwise the CO2 will not really dissolve into the solution at all. Next time you try this, put the liquid into a soda bottle and add some small chunks of dry ice. Plastic bottles can actually withstand a lot of pressure and as long as you don't put an unreasonable amount of dry ice in there, you will be just fine. After all of the dry ice has sublimated, shake the bottle around a bit, so all of the liquid can come into contact with carbondioxide. If you feel uncomfortable handling the pressurized bottle, you can always wear a face mask and some thick gloves. Hope you give it a try. Greetings from Germany.

Capturing the pressure is one tool. You need one more, Co2 will go into solution much easier if the liquid is ice cold. And yes, regular ice will cool a liquid down much more than dry ice, because, there is actual contact between the ice and water. Dry ice has a layer of Co2 gas around it. steve

You can also carbonate fruit . All you have to do is get a cooler put dry ice and fruit in it and wait a couple of days. Its best it the fruit is pre-cut. This happened to me on a camping trip. The fruit was even in a sealed container and it still got carbonated.

Grant, you could make your juices even more fizzy if you let a little chunk of dry ice inside a closed bottle with the juice. the evaporation of the dry ice will increase the pressure inside and effectively dissolving most of the CO2, try that.

So, as someone who has a homemade soda fountain... two things if you'd like to reproduce or do an update. 1) Super chilled (near freezing) water will help the CO2 to dissolve into the water more readily. So, if you use very cold liquids to start with, you'll get a better result with more fizz. 2) If you can "trap" the CO2 a little more, i.e., cover the container, it'll help keep the CO2 into the water rather than evaporating and escaping as it 'melts'.

It would make no difference because there is only so much carbon dioxide a liquid can dissolve. Cooling a drink down does make it able to dissolve more carbon dioxide, but the dry ice already does that (to the point where it's even freezing). Grade 8 science dude. Well, by Canada's curriculum anyways.

The main reason it wasn't as carbonated as the branded version was due to the fact that the branded one was carbonated under pressure. Can you try putting the dry ice into a bottle instead of a wine glass? If you did, I think you would get much better results! Just take care not to use too much dry ice (what you used here is probably way too much) as there is the hazard that the bottle could explode under pressure!

With the coke to make it fizzy again, yes. But what I was saying was that, especially in the case of the cider comparison, using dry ice in the bottle instead of the wine glass could have given him better results.

JekyllGaming99 surprisingly enough, I did pretty much the exact same experiment in my science lass in 7th grade. Did 2 experiments, one where the CO2 was not under pressure, and one where it was (had a valve that automatically released CO2 when the pressure became too high), unfortunately I couldnt set the pressure threshold too high of else the bottle would rupture :(

I'm not sure people thought their answers through. Drinks are mostly water. While, yes, the drink will go flat, but it will also entirely evaporate. So, while putting a "fizzy drink" in a vacuum-chamber, and try to pull a vacuum on it, will cause it to first go flat, then freeze, and finally sublimate until there is nothing left, simply having, and maintaining a vacuum in which you place your fizzy drink will pretty much cause it to instantly "boil" and leave only solids behind.
