Great Diy idea, I might give this a go except for the part when I realized that the mid section is starting to glow red hot! You should put a variable resistor to control the heating coil otherwise you will end up with a fire.

I've done this years back to control power to a soldering iron which was safe even on full power since the iron was rated for it. A hot air gun is something quite different that requires a temperature feedback loop or it will easily overheat being both unusable and unsafe. Forget this idea, or put your local Fire Dept on speed dial.

In smd reworking there is no a specific temperature that melts the solder because the pcb itself acts as a heat sinker.So forget 200-300 celsius because is very low and go for 400 and up just because is air,while blows it cools also and pcbs are double or more layers difficult to maintain the coming heat.So heat it up until it solders or desolders and there is no need for any high accuracy in the temperature readings.

The reason the gun was red hot was he only used 12 volt supply, but they are a 24 volt fan hence not enough airflow gun over heats.

the voltage of heat wire inside of heat gun is 48V or 24V with high amperage. you connect the heat wire to the main ac voltage and it will make heat wire so hot and maybe melt the plastic cover! also reduce the lifetime of heat wire! DO NOT TRY THIS GUYS.

En teoría el vídeo es valido, pero el ventilador tira la mitad del aire que necesitas / debe (utilizas una fuente de 12v y el ventilador es de 24v) por esa razón la resistencia se pone al rojo vivo, hubiera sido mas practico utilizar una fuente vieja de PC y en paralelo obtener 24v para el ventilador y con un potenciómetro 12v para la resistencia, utilizas la misma fuente como caja solo agregando el potenciómetro para la resistencia. Pero me ayudo el vídeo ya que necesitaba saber si el mango servía sin la necesidad de la estación de calor. Gracias! Tomalo como un consejo

I don't recommend to do this, but its pretty simple, you need a dimmer and 12/24v source (12v + step up is smaller and it works ok) what he did at first is cutting the wires for the ground (ESD) and thermocouple (temp sensing) after that you need a multimeter to determine which wires are for fan and which for heater

Some years ago, I bought a Atten AT8586 rework station, and it has exactly this soldering gun. Well, I am going crazy, since the hot air "was not enough" to desolder iphone board chips... I was there, using that hot air gun for minutes... everything was MADLY HOT, but the chip remains there... and -of course- after that, the chip is broken. I thing this is the reason @hardwareboy used that gun with a different "controller"... I can understand the PID thing etc. But I think that if you don't make this modification, the hot air gun can be used only for heat-shrinking-tubes... It's no more, no less than a TOY
