I follow the same practice with compost. I don’t have a leaf shredder, so I put leaves in a large Rubbermaid bin and use my string trimmer to achieve the same effect. After covering veg beds with the leaf mulch the rest goes into the compost bins. I started doing this last year, and while I knew, academically, that it would speed the process I was stunned at just how much faster things broke down. In addition to adding water I also “inoculate” a new bin periodically with a couple handfuls of finished compost to jumpstart the microorganisms. Thanks for another great video. The music was so uplifting, it was just what I needed. 😊

Thank you for sharing your process for shredding leaves. It really is amazing at how quickly shredded leaves break down! It's definitely a great idea to add some finished compost when making a new compost pile. Wonderful suggestion, friend! 🙏🏼😊

If you can get ahold of one or two comfrey plants, they readily multiply tucked in somewhere on the property; put their leaves in the bin or make a slushy (mighty stinky!) by immersing them in a bucket a few days, great fertilizer to the compost

I wonder about covering the compost bin - air permeable like a heavy sheet, or waterproof like a tarp? Maybe some pine branches if handy? Or no cover…

Great idea of just running over the leaves with a lawn mower to shred and collect them. I hope you have some great compost for next season! 😊🌺

Would this be helpful to do in a raised bed setting as well?
@budgetgardeningvita15 күн бұрын
Hi there. Great question! For creating new raised beds or topping off existing beds that will sit a season, I highly suggest this method in the fall so that the material has time to break down. For beds that will be used the same season, I like putting finished compost in those. Here's another related video that you might find useful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bomci2B_ZrOUr9k. 😊🌸

All summer, it was impossible for me to find 1 single brown leaves. So this time I'm saving them until next summer.
