Great video ! Thanks for sharing all info. I just wonder about the teabags: most contain plastic and will add micro plastics to the compost and your garden soil. I suggest ONLY add teabags which do not contain plastic.

Can you just pour coffee out of the pot into the compost? Wonder if it would work as good as putting just coffee grounds in it?

I just wanted folks to know that I watch around 12 mins. of your video. Then, I started laundry & went out and made my compost bin. Also, I just mowed my yard - in an hour. Got some green to go in it now!! Now, an hour later, I'm picking back up on your video!! This is my first compost bin!!! You are so right when you say, "The most important thing to do it - Just get started." Thanks so much!!

I really appreciate the compost sack presentation. I’m retired and don’t have the time or energy for a huge 3 ft cubic bin. I don’t have any major trees near my house so I will probably go to my local state park trail and bring a big bag for browns. The compost sack sounds like an awesome idea! Now I know why my previous owner never had a garbage disposer! She did an awesome job on her garden. I hope to continue the legacy of her work and have it be a benefit to me. Thanks again!

For mixing and turning the compost in compost sack. Simply tie the loose end and turn it side ways, roll it around a few times then turn it upside down. Now, shake it around a bit by rocking it in all direction and flip it back the way it was. Open up the loose end and you will find that it is all nicely mixed up. Remember, we started with 5 feet tall bag, with 3.5 feet tall pile, some amount of compacting will take place. That will leave enough space to pinch the ends to tie them up and with still some place left for the stuff to move around. Another benefit is, the liquid/fluid which has moved to the lower portion will once again get mixed back into the compost in making. Nice video! Keep up the good work!

The perfect temperature for a compost pile is 160 degrees Fahrenheit. At 120, the microorganisms are just starting to work on breaking down the composting materials, as the temperature increases, the action happens much faster. Once you get to temperatures over 200 degrees Fahrenheit the temperatures are too high for the beneficial microorganisms and they will begin to die off, so you want to make sure it stays below 200 degrees Fahrenheit, I try to always keep mine below 180. My compost pile today was running at 169 degrees Fahrenheit so at that temperature I am ecstatic. At that temperature, it is breaking down extremely fast. Instead of using a tarp to cover mine, I had an old 10'x10' popup tent frame that I raise about 3 feet above the top of my two side-by-side compost bins. I ordered a clear vinyl tarp to go over the top of it that I use bungee cords to attach to the frame. This allows more airflow in and around the pile and allows the sunlight to reach the pile, while still keeping it from getting too wet from the rain. It is just tall enough for me to stand under it so I can even turn the pile in the rain without getting soaked. It was old and the covering was torn so it wasn't being used for anything anymore, so this was the perfect repurposing of it.

This is great! A note on tea bags: not all are made with organic materials, so you'll want to double-check the tea box. It should specify, “tea bags are compostable.” Yogi is my favorite tea company because all bags are compostable, boxes are recyclable and they're a B corporation (good for people + planet.)

I'm surprised to find out that I can do loads of beneficial thing from my kitchen scraps. This is very sustainable way of returning to what we get from the soil anf the environment. Awesome.

I did a compost one year in an area of my backyard. Started out with a smart area, and it ended up being 6X6 size. Basically, all I used was the garbage, leaves, and straw from my duck's coop. I did pretty well in turning it over until it got so big I couldn't keep up with it. I never covered it nor watering. I would start in the fall around late October early November. So, the rain and snow kept it most for me. When I was able and the grown was soft from the snow, I would turn it as much as I could. I would get such good dark compost without turning it once or twice a month. I leave in Central US and it gets pretty cold, and sometimes the grown freezes, but compost on the bottom would stay warm, not hot. and I still came out with rich thick compost. I didn't do one yet this year because of my back and having to turn it.

I just ordered 3 of the 5-gallon Smart Pots. I think I'll start composting in one of those. I already have a small pile of plant cuttings, so they've already got a head start!! I collect egg shells & coffee grounds for my garden friends, but I think I'll keep them now!! And the trees behind my garden complex have leaves under them making leaf mold! I'll add that, too! This will be fun! Thank you for consolidating these videos!!

Hi, I live in Canada and saw your composting method heading towards winter.Granted I’ll not be able to sow until late May the growing season being fairly short. This being said, I have used my lawn mower to chop up leaves in my yard along with a final lawn mowing for the year and got a decent mix of chopped up leaves mixed with cut grass. After putting it in black bags, I checked it out and although not super hot, I was amazed hot warm it got despite the temperature being only 5 or 6 degrees C - around 40 Fahrenheit. Will be saying more in later weeks as to how it’s progressing.

Yah, it is really cool! Go to my main channel by clicking on my profile pic and search for " How to Build a Strawberry Crate Tower" and you'll see how I built it. I learned it from Urban Organic's Best but modified some things for my needs. Very cool! Go for it and let me know how it goes - I hope you are subbed and following along, Suzaane! Keep me posted - Kim

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) if you are making a hot compost pile, do you have to wait until it fully cools down before it is ready to be used in the garden?

Watched this video before, no, actually, clips of this video and got the composting bug. Each season for about 3-4 years my hubby has built a new garden bed and I would fill it with all my saved compost and still had plenty to top off all my other bed. Love it and the food I am able to produce. Yet today, I learned something new - compost tea - mind blowing🤯.

Great video. I have a lot of plants and fruit trees in my back and front yard. When I plant something, I use 1/3 cut grass, 1/3 local soil and 1/3 soil I buy from the local nursery. It’s basically compost in place.

For the compost tea, I get my water from my rain barrels or do a water change on my planted aquarium who water is rich in nutrients. Also my pile started at 8 by 8, shrunk to 5 high in 2 days, no cover
