The purpose of the grenade depends on what kind of grenade it is. E.g., a frag grenade explodes in shrapnels (not explosions) to pierce into people's legs or stomachs to cripple them. Simtex grenades are literally "sticky frags" that stick on a target before exploding in shards. Both kinds could come in handy.

Those are hand grenades they get activated from pulling a pin and releasing the handle the the handle will fall off and you have 3 seconds till it explodes releasing shrapnel everywhere
