Hey🌝 I want to update you on my yogurt venture. My crockpot broke the only one temperature. turned it off early and went with it. My yogurt turned out OK. I went and got a new crockpot. My second batch of yogurt is quite delicious. . Right now I’m working on my 3nd batch. I eat 4 quarts each week. I freeze my yogurt in special containers and mix all kinds of blends. Thanks over and over again. 🌺🏡💃🌝🥰💕

@FromScratchFarmstead6 ай бұрын
So glad you are liking this! I've only ever done a half gallon. If you doubled it, you'd have to adjust the times so that the temperatures would be right.

Tried it with a thermometer and went with 31/2 hours to heat to 171 degrees and took about 41/2 hours to get down to 112 degrees, then added a cup from the previous batch of yogurt and covered overnight. Great, creamy, sweet yogurt. I sweetened 1/2 with vanilla, tish of salt, maple syrup and a little stevia and poured into jars they can grab and go. WONDERFULLY HAPPY with not just this one but all your recipes!

Hi. Have loved being able to make my own yogurt. Thank you ! Have been making this now for about 4 months, every other week. Changed from whole milk to organic grassfed Half & Half. Loved the consistancy better. BUT - made it today and Major fail! Only thing i can attribute its failure is - i forgot to save 1/2 c from my last batch to add the culture. So i had frozen some Whey from a previous method - i used that. I don't think it was good. Im not quite sure What i can do now. I ladeled into my jars but it was like milk. Might try redoing it after i see what it looks like in the morning. But if i remake it i will use store bought plain Good yogurt. 🤞🏻

I'm so glad this has been working well for you!! Whenever that's happened to mine it's been because of the starter culture. I'd try buying new culture from the store and starting fresh!

@FromScratchFarmstead2 ай бұрын
Awesome! So one thing I've been doing lately that's been really helping has been actually reducing the amount of my starter a bit. Instead of using 1/2 cup, I've been doing a little bit less than that. Too much of the culture can interfere with the process and make a thinner yogurt. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

@@FromScratchFarmstead update - I made the yogurt exactly as you’ve shown and it came out so thin, more like a drink. I’m hoping when I use my own saved yogurt from this batch that it becomes thicker.
@kimwalter12695 ай бұрын
You can actually freeze some of your yoghurt in 1/4 cup ice cube trays then transfer them into a bag. Freezing your yoghurt wont kill the good bacteria and its always handy having it in the freezer. Take out of freezer the night before, take out of fridge about an hour before innocculating.

About to try this! Two questions .... can you use half the amount of the ingredients ... I think making two full jars every week will be too much for two of us! Would I use the same timing or shorter times? Also, can you add honey or something to it? When in the process would you do that?
@FromScratchFarmstead Жыл бұрын
Good questions! The times would definitely change if you only use a quart of milk but I haven’t experimented with it, so I’m not sure what they would be! Sorry!! Yes, you can definitely sweeten with honey. I’d just add it when serving :)
@twinny1200911 ай бұрын
So I tried making yogurt with 1 liter of milk. I adjusted the time to 1hr 15 mins stage (1st two stages) and incubated 8-10 hrs. The yogurt was not that thick so I drained out the whey to make it thicker. It tasted really good. I am going to try and up the timing to 1 1/2 hrs next time and see if it turns out a bit thicker. Hope this helps.

Great recipe, can't wait to try it in my slow cooker. Can you use homemade kefir as a cultured starter?
@FromScratchFarmstead11 ай бұрын
That’s a great question, I’ve never tried it but my gut says no because yogurt needs a thermophilic starter and kefir would be a mesophilic starter.
@twinny1200911 ай бұрын
@@FromScratchFarmstead Thank you. I am new to fermenting etc so not sure about the terms of cultures you mentioned. I didn't realise there was a difference😊. Can you recommend a book or could you do a video explaining the different types of cultures and their uses?
@FromScratchFarmstead11 ай бұрын
@@twinny12009 Yes! So yogurt is a thermophilic process or heat loving meaning that the culture is activated once the milk is heated. Kefir is kept at room temperature so it's a mesophilic culture meaning that it's activated at moderate temperatures. I hope that makes sense! My favorite book on fermentation is The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Katz.

@Yah1stp2nd367 ай бұрын
@@twinny12009 you can make kefir using what you get from the store. Look for those recipes. Add some kefir to your milk, sit it out on the counter at room temp for a period of time and you have kefir. It's a good ferment as well.

@FromScratchFarmstead11 ай бұрын
We use raw milk and I don't sweeten it but our kids like eating it with applesauce mixed in. You could definitely add honey or maple syrup and a bit of vanilla if you want a more naturally sweetened or vanilla flavor. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

@FromScratchFarmstead10 ай бұрын
Oh no! I'm sorry that happened. Every time mine didn't turn it was because of a weak or old starter culture. I think what you'd have now would be more of a buttermilk and could be used in baking or smoothies.
