I like this video! Especially due to how well it makes a seemingly and potentially difficult task easy enough for most anyone to understand. My compliments, very well done!!! The fact that there's no other technical BS (like building codes) to complicate things and still 100% code complient due to this application. Awesome!!! Nicely Done!!!

Excellent! Have a summertime RV with wood stairs. My girlfriend just fractured here leg, and needs a railing for a few stairs. The original stairs were home made by the previous owner, and a mix of various woods, so 2x4’s seemed the perfect option. Your Video showed me exactly what I need to do, including notching out the step. Well done, and I will do it with your tips in mind this weekend. Thank you

Very nice, simple solution for a railing any DIY-er can do. My only nitpick would be to use a 2 x 3 as the hand grip.
@158tonycat Жыл бұрын
Agreed, 2x4 is not to code because when falling, it’s too hard to grip; 2x3 is easier for the fingers to get around.

Pretty neat tutorial for a homeowner to understand. However, the railing is untreated wood with multiple penetrations through the top railing for water to get into. I see that you’re in Montana, would the railing even survive the first Winter?

Use your level with the length you need marked on your level , put the mark on a piece of masking tape if ya don't want a mark on your level. When measuring your top rail it will be very accurate rather than using your tape measure which is nearly always not plumb when measuring freehand.

It looks really good. Clean appearance and good proportions. My one concern would be longevity. I like the look of this conventional wood better, but i think it would last longer if made from pressure treated wood. Your thoughts?

A clear sealant, stain or pressure treated woood could be used. All these options would provide more life to railing.

Dig a post hole adjacent to the front 2x4 post. Put a 4x4 in it and about a bag of concrete to anchor it. Screw the front post to the 4x4. Also always drill pilot holes.
@ironlog16 жыл бұрын
simple, cheap, and neat. However it doesn't meet code! Spacing between vertical slats can not let a 4" diameter sphere (child's head) pass through. 5" spacing is too wide. Also the hand grip part ...a 2x4 laid across another 2x4.....does not meet code requirements. Sorry to rain on your very clear video demonstration.

I know this video was made back in 2016, but today's stair codes do not allow you to build it this way anymore. Be sure to consult a current copy of your locations code if that is a concern for you.
@marcogeraldis71178 ай бұрын
Whats wrong with it?
@sethd11258 ай бұрын
You have to have a graspable handrail. Perhaps a separate handrail was added after. The vertical 2x4 used at the bottom instead of a 4x4 post is not blocked in the framing properly and does not use the correct type of fasteners. It will work fine the way he did it. Just would not pass inspection in most places. @@marcogeraldis7117

@@sethd1125 Im actual doing a handrail kinda similar to this now and because the deck isn't high enough of the ground no codes were really looked at. More so just a perimeter was needed.
