@@krjraider Oh, my goodness! It took probably a week and a half. I had about 35 of them, so I would do a little bit each day, until my hand bones got too achey. It would’ve taken much longer, but I opted to cut them in half, like Christian of LazyDreads did! It’s been over a year since I brushed them out, and my hair is longer than when I cut it to brush them out. ☺️

Lazy Dreads Yes! I made my first one from reading around and decided to find a video to be sure I was doing it properly. I want very thin dreads so i started out with a tiny section and I feel like I tightened/knocked it much more than you did to the point it is at least 40% shorter than my un-knotted hair. My un-knotted hair is about the same length as the hair model in this video. Do you think I am doing it too tight, or is it just because I'm working with smaller sections of hair so it's going to compress more? Thank you for this video! You have the best dread information on the internet I've seen, and I've been looking for quite a while! :)

It doesn't necessarily matter about the method they do it with bc eventually you will get the same end result. They can do a combination of twist n rip and back combing. There's also even the chance tht they do use the back combing just don't have a name for it and just do whatever to form the dreadlocks.

Twist and rip makes things dreads that fall out easy you ;not wanna use that method iv been researching for weeks B4 I started to cover all my bases. As you said, they get shorter over time. These particular ones were not much shorter than the starting hair length - however they quickly lost length after they had started to be washed and so showing how much they'd lost at day 1 wouldn't have been all that representative.

Paul O Backcomb..... or T&R are simply methods used to hold the hair in sections - as long as the backcomb or T&R holds the hair into sections, then it's doing it's job. Long term it shouldn't make a noticeable difference which of the two is used.

I started new dreads 2 days ago using back comb method. It was suggested that I leave the nylon thread that's separating the sections in my hair for three months ... Or to just let them absorb into the dread. Should I cut these instead ? I'm afraid if they're too tight, they'll hinder the dread from knotting from the thread, up. Thanks !

Zack Dukes I would recommend trying out different dreadlock-appropriate shampoos so that you have found what works for you BEFORE you begin the dreadlocks. You will likely want to stop conditioning the hair as you get closer to starting backcomb dreadlocks - but you'll need to continue to brush it right up until the day you begin - if the hair has already started to knot, you won't be able to run the comb through it in order to backcomb the hair. kzbin.info/www/bejne/joOoeHV6Yq9rmLs

I am prepping for dreads. I have fine hair that tends to be oily because I do a lot of yoga and sweat a lot. I have hair about 10' or so and only on the top, so I don't a lot to deal with. But I am struggling with the technique. Both have pros and cons and I am leaning towards twist and rip. I really appreciate your videos. I keep watching them and think, yeah, twist and rip... then, yeah, back comb. Bit seem solid. But I noticed you tend to leave a decent amount of space close to the scalp and don't dread all the way down. Looks like is alleviates Side Show Bob hair a little. So what I am getting at is, I am close to ordering a basic dread kit, or is that a waste of $$ in your opinion?

I dreaded my hair yesterday using t&r method and i had let my bangs grow to about 4 inches before i dreaded it in hope that it would stay in place, when i was t&ring my bangs would not knot with the rest of the section i took, i wanted larger dreads on the top of my hair so i put my small amount of bangs and mixed it with a bit more hair from the top to make a 1 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch square when i was seperating but my bangs seem to be slowly unraveling while the rest of the dread is really knotted, how can i retangle my bangs back into its original dread, im thinking about backcombing which i why i went to this video but im not sure if it will work, thank you for any help and much appreciated!
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
+brendon hilliard I would not personally try to dreadlock hair shorter than 6 inches. At 4 inches you are going to struggle to get things to hold. I would myself only use T&R on medium to long lengths of hair. I think trying to use T&R on 4 inches of hair is not going to hold up so well.
@brendonhilliard38499 жыл бұрын
+Lazy Dreads my hair is about 20 inches long maybe a little longer in all, what i tried to do when i was initially t&ring was to take my bangs and take a little bit of much longer hair and try to dread my bangs into the longer hair and it did not work one bit, what i ended up doing after posting that question was taking it out and seperating my bangs from it and then dreading my bangs which i did with a combo of the t&ring and backcombing and its holding up beautifully, i only have one more question! How long should i wait to wash my hair after dreading it? thank you!

I do not recommend to do it alone, it is not so easy to work on the back of your own head. Different people will lose different amounts depending on their starting hair length and their hair thickness. Around 1/3 is the average loss I see people experience, but it could be more or less.

@WILD__THINGS9 жыл бұрын
So on the topic of crochet hooks, if I may ask, you answered another question below by saying they are useful but need to be continously used once you start and that they can be harmful to the locks. I've heard so many people say that crochet hooks will eventually make your dreads fall off. Is this true? And if you don't recommend crochet hooks for maintenance then what would you suggest to avoid too much frizzy hair and keep the locks as tight as possible?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
sakecity7 When you're using a crochet hook you're taking an object, pushing it through the dreadlock, collecting loose hair and then pulling the object back into the dreadlock. There is a certain level of risk that hairs will get damaged in the process - the crochet hook can't navigate it's way through the dreadlock flawlessly - it will break some hairs in the process - how much damage gets done will depend on how big the crochet hook is, how gently the process is done and how often it is done. Some people will have their dreadlocks many many years and maintain them with a crochet hook, never noticing a problem - whereas other people will only have their dreadlocks a short time before noticing problems and unfortunately you cannot really be sure whether you'll be one of the "lucky ones" or not because you can't tell whether it's working out until you notice damage - at which point it's a bit late. While I do not go out of my way to tell people whether they should use a specific maintenance or not - due to the risks, it's not something I'd be comfortable doing to my own hair and therefore it's not something I'd be comfortable recommending others to do to theirs. It's an "at your own risk" deal. I recommend waiting for the dreadlocks to mature and lock up on their own.
@WILD__THINGS9 жыл бұрын
Lazy Dreads Thanks for responding. Your advice seems very sensible. I've had people tell myself and others that they are an automatic death sentence for your locks that will undoubtedly make them fall out. Being that I personally know a few people who started their locks with hooks and still use them 10 years later with no breakage, not to mention all the people on KZbin., I know that is not necessarily always the case. That being said I don't believe it to be worth the risk. So then after backcombing, how do you get the hair to stay locked initially if you aren't using wax, hooks or rubber bands?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
sakecity7 if the hair is backcombed correctly it doesn't need anything other than the backcomb to stay initially locked.

@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
I would wait until the hair is slightly longer. If you want them thick then they will likely need to be larger than 1 inch squares. 1.5 inch squares will result in thicker dreads, I probably wouldn't go much bigger than that though. The thickness of the resulting dreads will be determined by your hair thickness.

Hey Lazy Dreads I really want dreads. My hair is about shoulder length. Which method would better organize my dreads? I want them to be neat. Also, should I let my hair grow longer to so that when I start dreads they won't be as short?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
D'Angelo Yates Each method has it's own set of pros and cons that can really only be weighed up by the individual. I'd recommend checking out examples of each method - the timelines section of the Dreadlock Truth Forum has plenty to look at - and then seeing which method you think would best suit your situation. I think time is better spent if you start the dreadlocks as soon as you can and let the hair grow while the hair is locking... rather than just growing the hair.

I just backcombed my hair and right after, I put a homemade gel in my hair that is called "sweet locks" (honey, coconut oil, and aloe vera) it looks good and I expect them to get better over time. Im just wondering if you think it was a mistake to put the gel in my hair right after I dont want this gel to affect my dread journey. If you can help, it would mean a lot.
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
Mark Zuckerburg Honey will stick the hairs together - makes them look more 'dread-like'... but will actually inhibit the movement of the hairs, stopping them from being able to form new knots and slowing the process. Coconut oil will moisturise the hair and condition it... something someone with older dreads may appreciate, but on younger dreads extra unbalanced oils can loosen knots.
@HaughtyClock610 жыл бұрын
Ah man, well I only put a little to keep all the hairs in their sections. At this point what do you suggest I do? Should I wait a few days and just wash it normally?
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
Mark Zuckerburg Not a lot else you really can do now.

i have semi thin kinda curley hair, can be really curly at times, im wanting alot of dreads. not very thick, but distinguishable from braids. whats the best way i should do mine, and can u section too thin? also do u think mane and tail would help them grow faster?
@supershroomgirl9 жыл бұрын
can u section too small i meant.
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
jane doe As the dreadlocks lock up they will be distinguishable from braids regardless of what method you use. You can go for which ever you feel most comfortable and confident with - but you will likely want to avoid natural/freeform if you're looking for a particular/uniform thickness. You can certainly section too thin - a section is too small if there is not sufficient hair within it to actually produce a dreadlock form. There is also the issue that thinner dreadlocks = a greater total number across the head, but also more that are able to knot into each other and therefore a greater number that will need to be separated - and thinner dreadlocks are harder to separate back out than thicker dreadlocks.

When you say, don't wash your hair, do you mean not to get the dreads wet at all or does that just mean applying soap and scrubbing? i'm just wondering if I should run my head under the shower with new dreads. Thanks!
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
John Derda There are no solid rules as to what you can and can't do, however I personally would not get them wet for the first 5 days or so (5 days really isn't that long). If you run them under the shower and get them wet... but don't actually shampoo them, you can actually end up making them feel more irritating - also if you're going to get them wet, you're going to have to spend the time drying them... so you might as well have shampooed them at that point.

Hey there! I am currently working on my 11 year old sons dreads. I am using the back comb method and I think they are going great so far! I do have some loose hairs, though, on each one. Should I be trying to make those knot in, or just palm roll them and leave them?
@miamilev19 жыл бұрын
lev levy This is the initial time just now creating the baby dreads. So I want to do the best I can so they have a good foundation.
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
lev levy There will be loose hairs - while some will certainly work to try and knot in every last strand, once you come to wash them many more loose hairs will surface - as is the way with dreadlocks that are still young.

Hey man I backcombed my hair today and I was wondering how long they stay large/poofy? Anyway to tighten them up? (caucasian, fine, straight hair)
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
They will settle after you've been sleeping on them and washed them a couple of times.You can sea salt them or wool rub them - or palm roll them to give yourself something to do, but in the end they're going to just need lots of time to lock up.
@denisekittymonster141910 жыл бұрын
You only need to backcomb once right? Like you don't have to touch it up once in a while or..?
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
You just backcomb the once. The backcombing is to group the hairs up. Over time the hairs then knot together and form the dreadlocks proper.
@ThatBethesdaGuy8 жыл бұрын
If I permed my hair to add some texture, would that make the process even more damaging?
@evebernard8 жыл бұрын
+That Bethesda Guy I did braids to get my hair started which provided lots of texture for my straight hair, and bonus your hair will be presectioned for the dread process and it will be a chemical free method to get your texture. :)

On your FaceBook page, you post photos of people who've combined methods. I'm a little confused on how they do this. Is there a video where you cover this topic, and if not, could you make one?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Paige Protonentis You can't use both methods on the same exact part of hair, but you start start a dreadlock with one method and finish it with another - or any combination of the two. Both backcomb and T&R use friction to encourage knots to form - you can backcomb the roots and T&R the body of the dread for example.
@paigeprotonentis29489 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh, well how would you go about using back combing and natural neglect? That one seems kind of different to me...
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Paige Protonentis It would, at least as I interpret it, mean that the dreadlocks were started with backcomb and then neglected. The information posted along with each picture is written by the person who sent in the picture, so how they describe their methods used may not be the same as how someone else may describe the same method.

Since i started my dreads with 5 inch hair how long should i wait till i take a shower so they dont wash out?
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
You should wait at least 5 days before washing new dreads, waiting 7 is better. Starting them short will certainly increase the risk that they will wash out... however waiting much long won't really help them all that much as they'll start to get greasy.

Okay, so almost every video I've seen I have commented on, but with every new video, I have new questions. So, I'm sorry if you keep having to answer my questions! Anyways. Since you've been saying it takes months to form and it looks messy, should I wait until summertime to begin forming them? Because I'm currently in a vocational school and they're very uptight about how I should look. Do you think (since I'm just considering right now) that I should wait (if I do do them)? Or that I should go ahead and do it so they're mature by the time I'm being interviewed for a job? Also, I wouldn't be asking this question, but we are not really allowed to wear any type of hat in school, or else I would get a tam hat to look more "professional," in my environment.

What do you do when you get to the tip of the hair? Do you do anything special or just continue backcombing?
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
Godly Rotter Just backcomb down until you run out of hair. It's not of great importance to get the tips super knotted up as they'll likely come loose once the dreadlocks get washed anyway.
@Parlay_Tv9 жыл бұрын
What method would you recommend for natural curly hair?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
***** Each method has it's own set of pros and cons and so I think it's up to the individual to decide which they think sounds right for them - with regards to the hair being curly - I believe hair texture and hair length are going to play a much larger role than whether the hair is curly or straight and so I will not usually take it into account.

So I've been working on my wifes hair for a couple days, and thank god for your videos. She has fine hair and the back seems to be staying in real good shape. However, the front has become a hassle. The biggest thing is how often do I keep doing this process? I dont mind doing it, but at the same time, I dont want to over do it. Also, she wants th hem to look smooth, and she wants to add hair "glue" or murphy buch wax to create that look. Whats your thought on that with baby dreads?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
faithunbound79 This process should only need to be carried out once. This process serves to keep the hair separated into sections - it does not create finished fully locked dreadlocks, it separates the hair out so that those separate sections may eventually lock into fully formed dreadlocks - but this takes months. In the mean time they may become loose and messy before they become locked and rope-like. I would not recommend wax, and certainly not a glue - attempting to hold the hairs in place will stop the hairs from being able to tighten and lock.

How do i know if im getting them tight enough? Also my hair is thin so how big do i need to make my dreads?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Necro666Mole It's difficult to say what is 'tight enough' because there's not really a scale of 'tightness'... you can only get them as tight as you can and either they'll hold up and you'll know you did a good enough job... or they'll wash out, in which case you'll know something didn't work out. How big you make them depends entirely on how big you want them.

Tristan Johnson If you have enough hair, you can. They're not going to look like great dreads when they're young though.
@tristanjohnson952610 жыл бұрын
Lazy Dreads i had them for about 6 months and i was able to brush the out.
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
While some people can get very strong dreads by 6 months, it's more common for it to take 12 months or more and even then it would be possible to brush them out if you wanted to. It's possible to brush out 7+ year old dreadlocks.
@tristanjohnson952610 жыл бұрын
Lazy Dreads they didn't form, and i was told if they are bigger they wont form. What would you say is the best way to get them done?
@LazyDreads10 жыл бұрын
There is no single best way, different methods suit different people in different situations... and it also depends on the end result that is sought. The three methods I recommend are Natural/Neglect/Freeform, Backcomb and Twist & Rip.
@hThemeZ10 жыл бұрын
