Also something I did not know is, even though my back comb dreadlocks were tight they mostly loosened up but stayed in section. That is one thing that I never knew but I guess it's not unusual. You don't hear much about the things that happen a week to a few months after they are done. But out of anyone else I have seen you have gotten down the half way from started to mature, better then any other.

Today, I was planning out my backcomb dreads that will be put in on Saturday, I had one put in professionally today just to see how it will go and I started with about 6 inches of curly hair, it turned into a little less than four inches of hair but a pretty sick babydread.

Thanks alot for these videos, they are so helpful. I sectioned my own hair, it was difficult. I made my sections big because I wanted bigger dreads, but i didnt expect them to become so fluffed out and fat after i back combed them.

How do you maintain Backcomb dreads? I have 3, 1 month old dreads and was wondering if I should backcomb periodically. If not, how can I get the little hairs back into the dread and keep the tightness.

You can definitely put your back combed dreads up in a bun! Just don't leave them up in a bun all day so they can move around and get locked up :)

Is it a good idea to use rubberbands on the roots? I am only 2 weeks in but I noticed a lot of my dreads have either split or mainly straightened back out. Would you recommend splitting up all these sections with rubberbands or just re-backcomb the sections that need it and continue to let it be?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
Rubber bands hold things together - makes them look more "together".... but having hairs held with elastic bands is not the same as having hair held with knots. Elastics restrict movement and can rub on dreads forming weaker / thinner spots. Loose hairs can also knot over the top of them meaning they need cutting out.

Hey, I am looking into starting the dreadlock process in the next few months (allowing my hair to grow out a bit more first (6-8in)) I see that you recommend backcombing for shorter hair dreads so I will likely go with this method. Now you say the backcombing method is a starting method that you wait for 6-12+ months or so for the dreadlocks to form but are there scenarios that you would need to re-backcomb a dread?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
Sirref If there are not enough knots initially formed the dreadlock can fall loose and wash out, in this situation the hair would need re-backcombing to ensure the hair locked up in the desired section, but other than a complete wash out you shouldn't re-backcomb.

Might sound dumb but I'm aiming for a hairstyle similar to Tim Minchin (kind of a mix between dreads and regular hair), how would I go about this? Would back combing be the healthiest/cleanest method and the easiest to wash out/remove if they look bad? Cheers :)

Luke Dehnert Tim has been asked a few times in interviews about his hair, so it's probably not too difficult to follow exactly what he does. Since the info is out there somewhere.. I just can't off the top of my head remember what he does, I wouldn't want to just guess as I might be wrong. I don't think he washes it as often as "normal", but I'm not sure whether he backcombs it - if the hair is knotty already, it becomes quite difficult to actually backcomb through.
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
Luke Dehnert I stand corrected as far as the backcombing goes - " I get my hair permed straight, then put a bit of muck in it, back-comb it chunky style and spray it with hairspray. After a few shows I don’t have to do anything to it; it just stays like that".

Would it be a good idea to neglect my hair for a couple of weeks before backcombing? Until i see some sectioning i can use to backcomb?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
If you neglect the hair, it'll start to knot together into sections. However... once it's started to knot together... you won't be able to backcomb through it because of the knots.

hey i was wondering if backcombing the ends ove already dreaded dreads is a good idea, so far i havent seen much result but have pulled alot of dead hair out of the dreads
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
SVCKMY DICK Backcombing is used to hold hairs in place so that they are more likely to interact with hairs within a desired section. If you try and rebackcomb hair... it's still combing and will undo any progress that is already present in the part that you brush through and simply backcomb it up like day 1 dreads. Dreadlocks that are already knotted at some point along their length do not require rebackcombing because the knotted part already holds the rest of the hairs within the section.

hey man ive been researching like crazy and watching all of your videos. ive been trying to grow my hair for dreads for months andi have about 5-6 inches of thick afro like hair im thinking about usung the backcombing method myself but in this video you say they would stick up and out but i have a labor job and have to wear a hardhat all day. how would that effect the backcombed dreads?? also what could i do to keep mynhair from getting dirty?? ive been wearing a bandana to keep it back and somewhat clean but it will still get a little dirty. please respond man id really appreciate it i dont want to mess them up. also really like your vids very informative - dante
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 жыл бұрын
Hi dante a Young backcomb dreads can often stick up and/or out because of how the hair is teased during the process. They are not solid - they can be laid down under a hat, it's just that at first they will often not lay flat on their own. Having them under a hat/bandana all day won't be particularly beneficial to the locking process, but that's just a balance that has to be made between what's best for the hair and what's actually practical in real life. With regards to keeping them clean you can really only go so far - covering them with a bandana etc can protect them somewhat from dust/dirt but obviously not from sweat etc. It's mainly just an annoyance while they're very young - as time goes by you'll be able to wash them at a frequency that suits you and your situation and so you'll simply be able to wash them when they get dirty should you need to.

@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 жыл бұрын
Any fine-toothed metal comb will do the job, but you want to make sure that it's not at all sharp on any of the edges - it's worth spending an extra $ to get a decent comb rather than ending up with one that chews up the hair or breaks.

6 inches or more. Obviously longer hair will result in longer dreads.. but it's better to start them and wait for the hair to grow while you're locked.... rather than waiting for the hair to grow before starting them.

Once the hair is long enough, you should start. If you wait until your hair grows longer in the hope of getting longer dreadlocks... well they will be longer.. but you'll have wasted all the time in between in which the dreadlocks could have been progressing - the hair would still be growing while locked.

How long should I only shampoo my hair for, before beginning back combing? Is it important?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 жыл бұрын
Kyle Stoppard It's not massively important, so there's no strict rules on it - but it is helpful - hair that's still conditioner-soft will be less likely to hold knots and therefore more likely to fall out - so backing off the conditioner beforehand can have an effect. I would say that it's more important to swap the shampoo early though, rather than just dropping the conditioner - swapping the shampoo for something dreadlock-friendly will ensure, for one, that you actually already have a shampoo ready for when it's time to wash the dreadlocks, and secondly that you're sure you've found a shampoo that works well with your hair/hair type etc.

Ok so i started my locks like 4 days ago via backcomb... I kept bands in for the first two days bc i was afraid they would come out... I sprayed sea salt in my hair and it all got matted in big globs so i separated them the best i could but its hard to see a definitive pattern to it. They kinda just afro'ed out... I can still feel knots around the roots and i when i grab a hand full they separate themselves but they just look like a knotted half afro mess... It kind of looks like Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria lol but with out the wavy frizzy look.. My questions are should i wash them? If i leave them be will they still form dreads? And is it bad that the length is very knotted anymore? Thanks in advance, my anxiety is killing me bc idk whether to leave them alone or straighten it all back out and start over. Also my hair looks like yours before you dreaded it just not as thick... Same look and the ends kinda curl a lil when long. But pretty thin. And my hair is about 9 in. Long when straight
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 жыл бұрын
Necro666Mole When you wash it you find out whether they were started effectively or not. Washing will loosen young dreadlocks, but you'll see whether they loosen but stay separated, or loosen and turn to nothing. If they stay separated off into lumps of knotted hair - those lumps should go on to form dreadlocks... if they fall to nothing then, well, it'll still form dreadlocks naturally if you leave it long enough - but it'll need starting over if you want to keep some sort of section control.
