If the ball you are using does not have a flat bottom, just trim off a small amount after you make the hole so your ball will have a flat bottom so it will sit on the lid better.

Is styrofoam safe for the birds? My concern is they may eat the bits that may break off. Maybe use a plastic softball or wiffle ball.

i love these. i would also recommend finding a solid colored lid and bottom. It helps keep the algae from growing since it can be a pain to clean :)

Or maybe set it inside of a larger tub that is a solid color and that way you could probably put some fake plants around it or fill it up with extra rocks

Make sure to change the water every day! Bleach all the plastic and throw away the plastic ball. Birds that congregate in small areas pass diseases so quickly. I won’t use styrofoam!

@@SkeensSeattleUSA I would think their beaks would get stuck in the styrofoam. I need to buy some tubing so that the pump sits at the bottom of the bowl. Was thinking of a stainless steel bowl with the plastic plate on top.

You could also paint the bottom of the plastic shoe box with easy dry acrylic paint, maybe red to attract them more

Thanks soooo much. I ran across your channel several months ago and bought a hummingbird feeder, for the couple of birds that were flying around here in winter, because of it. It's been up ever since and is so fun. Placed right outside my living room window on my small patio. I've had several birds feeding from it. (Now it appears one is 'protecting' it and shooing off anyone else.) Anyway, it so hot here now I thought they could use some water. The pie plate with a liner and bird bath I tried were a fail. The amazon types like this would splash water everywhere. I am definitely off to the hobby store tomorrow to set up this bath. Perfect! Thanks for my new hobby!!!!
