+CertainlyCaroline hi how long do you bake polymer clay dolls at oven ? i made one 2 days ago.it had many cracks on it.i am so sad about it
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that. There's nothing more frustrating than spending time on a sculpture just to find it ruined by the baking process. Do you have a separate oven thermometer? Don't trust the thermometer built into your oven. Another possibility would be that the clay is old. I've had that happen to me and I ended up throwing out the clay because I knew I was baking correctly, so I came to the conclusion that the store sold me old clay.
@neslihan52788 жыл бұрын
+CertainlyCaroline :( i ordered oven thermometer .maybr my clay was old.i didnt know it.indeed i have no chance to order new clay cause my country imports it from another countries.i used sculpey ve eveyone says lt ls brittle. by the way thanks so much for your care

is this something that can be set outside in the weather? very beautiful work!
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Thank you so much for your interest and your kind feedback. I created the fairy bench to be placed in a house plant arrangement, so I wasn't thinking of outdoor use as I was making it. Polymer clay itself does very well outside, but I paint the polymer clay in the tutorial, which means it will need a varnish if it were to go outside. The epoxy glue should be good outside as well, and probably the fabri-tac. I would seal the faux moss and the painted polymer clay with a product called Varathane...amzn.to/29sMkXk. Varathane is known to work well with polymer clay. Some people don't like the spray kind with polymer clay, so you you might want to go with the can. You might find it at a local hardware store, though it may only be available in the US. Even with a few coats of varnish, I'd still bring it inside for the winter. Hope that helps! :)

Acrylic paint can be baked, no problem. It actually has a similar effect to Genesis Heat set, in that if you paint it on unbaked clay it bonds to your clay when baking.
@Certainlycaroline2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip JessTastic. When I was first starting out I was so careful about what went in the oven! Polymer clay art has certainly been a journey for me -- now that I've had a few years working with it I've found that most things can be baked right along with the clay.

can it be left outside bc of the faux moss? thanks
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested it outside. I believe the glues would hold up outside, and polymer clay does well outside, however the paint on the clay might fade. You could cover the painted polymer clay with Varathane outdoor varnish, you could even cover the faux moss in the varnish. That'd probably be your best bet, but I'd still bring it in for the winter. :)

@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
The green stuff is what I call faux moss. You could also use real dried moss, available at hobby stores. Real dried moss would look better but it will eventually dry out. I get my faux moss (or underbrush) from Woodland Scenics. Here's a more direct link than I have in my list of supplies in the description: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/U-MG/page/1 Thanks for your interest!

this is sooo cute. I love these little details and stuff :) Just one question: why can't you bake acrylics?
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Floraphine. I haven't had good luck baking acrylics. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but when I tried it, it came out kind of sticky. I prefer the heat set paints... seems there's less to worry about. I love your question, though, and I want to explore it further with a blog post. I'd love to pick your brain...What's your experience? What brand of paint are you using? Have you found it works with any clay brand? I'll be researching this kind of thing in the blog post. Thank you once again, Floraphine, I love, love, love your input.
@icecreamprincess0008 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your detailed explanation :) I just checked my sort of fairy candle I made a year ago, as I had put acrylics on it and then added more clay and baked again. And I have to say, you're right, it does feel a bit more sticky than the unpainted parts! I didn't notice that before you pointed it out so thank you very much. However, I'm wondering if the stickiness goes away if you put a matte varnish on top... what do you think? So far I've been using a very cheap brand of paint from a local store. Now I got a set of a bit better ones from a friend but I haven't tried them, yet. I'm really looking froward to your blog post though. I just love to get to know experiences from other crafters. This sharing is really nice, isn't it? :)
@Certainlycaroline8 жыл бұрын
I suppose you might try the matte varnish in a inconspicuous spot on the fairy candle just to see if it helps or hinders. I tried baking acrylics after reading that you could so I kind of think I must have done something wrong, or maybe there is a certain brand that works or doesn't work. I'm looking forward to experimenting some more and documenting it in a blog post since it looks like it works for some clayers and not for others. I'll let you know when I finish... it may be a couple of weeks though because my plate is so full right now. I might just set stuff aside and crank it out anyway though because I'm very curious. Thanks again Floraphine, it's been fun getting to know you.
