The Fire Nation was inspired by the Japanese culture more so than the Chinese in how they dressed, their names, and how the country was designed geographically. The Fire Nation is comprised of roughly 19-20 islands and has a pretty big handful of active volcanoes and Japan is made up of 6,852 islands and currently has 110 active volcanoes. Now, I'm not saying that the Fire Nation was inspired ONLY by Japan, it does draw some elements (no pun intended) from the Chinese culture. For example, fire bending was inspired by a Chinese martial art known as Northern Shaolin. Another thing is that on all wanted posters in the Fire Nation, the word "Fire Nation" is written in Chinese as 烈火國, meaning "raging fire country" Yes, I know, I'm a huge Avatar geek, but I am perfectly okay with that.
