I have surely been wrong about some fire making techniques before, but the clear resin never burned very long for me. The real intensity and length of burn comes from the milky colored condensed resin.

My neighbors cut down several huge pine trees and those things bled like stuck hogs. I collected a bunch of the sap and smeared it on cotton makeup pads and they work really well. I guess between the fibers of the cotton pads...it overcame the moisture in the sap. This sap was fresh and very clear. I will have to remember the clear fresh sap has moisture in it. When the clear dries in the cotton it concentrates enough to be a good accelerant. Your fire starter should still be great.

Yes, I anchor the base of my Ferro Rod in amongst the tinder then strike down the rod. The punkwood would not have held together with that king of strike.
