BONUS TIP: One thing I forgot to mention in the video is if you just want to take photos of Christmas lights or city lights without a subject in the foreground (like the snowman in the video), the trick is to first focus on something right in front of your lens, then disable autofocus. After you do that, anything that is about 10 feet away will be out of focus and you'll be able to see the light shapes.

Does it work with a kit lens 18-55 and how big should the opening be. Won't it block the field of view producing a vignetting effect?

Hi Moose, I brought my camera a long time ago Cannon Rebel T1i. I have always used the automatic mode for many years now. Until recently I noticed myself taking lots of photos of my daughter and I asked myself how do I get this wonderful photos like a professional. So I looked up for some tips on KZbin and came across your channel and find it really helpful. I've follow some of your tips and have a few struggles with low light and moving motions from the object (kids). I have a 4 year old son and a 5 month daughter. I was wondering since christmas is coming up, how do I take a photo in low light with a Christmas tree light on while the kids open presents and not get a blurriness in the movements or a streak lines in the Christmas lights.
@MooseWinans8 жыл бұрын
Hey Lisa! Yeah, that's a common scenario that beginners struggle with. I actually just created a video that shows you my exact setup for taking Christmas photos indoors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYPElX-Ee8t-ibs

Thank you so much for the tips and the video you just uploaded. I must say that this has definitely made my day because most of my photos over the years all turn out black or either blurry. It saves me from loosing all those precious smile photos of the little ones. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family🙂

how did you set aperture to 1.8 With kit Lens please ?
@MooseWinans8 жыл бұрын
Hi Salah, it's not possible with the kit lens. The lowest aperture is f/3.5 at 18mm and f/5.6 at 55mm. In order to get down to f/1.8, you'd have to get a lens that is capable of that. Like the nifty fifty, 50mm f/1.8.

aperture priority, then you need a wide aperture if possible - small f number, so that the lights in the background are out of focus. Standing further back and zooming in can help too

Moose, I tried this and for some reason i wasn't getting the same effect as you :( I have a Nikon D3200 with a kit lens 18-105mm. I followed your instructions and everything but it didnt work, please help ? :0
@MooseWinans8 жыл бұрын
Aakash Jey If you're not seeing the blur effect, make sure you're zoomed out to at least 55mm. Then try focusing on something right in front of your lens (like your hand). Once you acquire focus, disable it by switching the tab on your lens to M. Then look through your camera at some Christmas lights or city lights that are at a distance 10+ feet away. They should look like round circles. The final step would be to put the different shaped filters in front of your lens. That should do it 😀👍

@MooseWinans8 жыл бұрын
Just switch over to manual focus and make it so that everything is blurry. Once you do that, you can attach your bokeh filter and you'll be able to see all the awesome shapes :D

what happens if you move it front and back a few mm ? (to have a clean and sharp bokeh shape should not if be at the front focal length ?(i guess the lens internal aperture blades being at the back focal length of the lens) www.optics4kids.org/getattachment/8bc910d3-ed0c-4e9a-ae1b-e62df6f9551d/Focal-length-(f).aspx
