how to make a simple little strong axle for any small utility or garden trailer.
i used wheels with bearings already in them .
the beauty of doing it this way is , if you abuse your trailer and some how bend the all thread sticking out of each end of axle tube , you just get a new piece of all thread and replace it. axle tube doesnt have to be cut or rewelded

Threaded rod is the best to use for an axel. When my old wheel bearings sheered off on my scooter. I had donor wheels which were smaller from an older scooter. I took the old rusted axel out, went to Home Depot, got threaded rod, cut it and screwed it on. The threaded rod coated $5.74 but it was 36 inches long. They didn’t have my size when I was looking for shorter length threaded rod, so I had to get the big one. In home depot they even give you a saw table where you can cut it there too.

Mine was 5/16 and the donor wheels were from a Razor Scooter.

I want to build a garden cart using what materials I have on hand which is treated lumber. Bout the only things I need are a couple of wheels for the back, an axle and some angle iron. The wheels I have for the front are small and I thought of using wheelbarrow wheels for the back. My one concern is setting up the front wheels for turning as they are already attached to an axle. I thought of copying the steering from a child's Red Wagon. The cart's bed would measure 40 in. by 26 in., big enough to carry 6- 5 gallon buckets I would use it for hauling 5 gallon buckets of stuff and for hauling firewood. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

i guess copying wagon steering would work . . its always hard for me to answer without being there in person . if your gonna pull behind tractor be simpler to leave front wheels off. if your hand pushing mostly maybe get wheels with swivels built in . i don't know buddy . lol but good luck with the project :)

@Posty2196 i have done that before but its not as strong . instead of using all- thread i used big bolts . i welded the head of the bolt right to the side of the cart . it really just depends on how much weight your hauling around and what you have to weld the bolt to . .

Im looking to make a cart but I only have standard bicycle wheels with loose ball bearings. Do you think it would be possible to use a similar axel design with these wheels without some sort of fork that supports the wheel on either side?

Can you explain the materials you used and the steps better? I'm doing a project for school and need to build and Egyptian chariot. There is little on how to do this and I have little mechanicals know-how. Thanks!

mig welding is the easiest to learn . but mig doesnt work outside . the wind blows your shielding gas away . you can buy fluxcore wire for some migs that will work outside. but in my opinion get a stick welder if your welding outside and get a mig welder if your inside . get the stick if your on limited budget , its harder to learn but works inside and out ..

@Vincerama if it was used at high speeds all the time i might worry about threads . but it wont hurt anything on a yard cart.

I'm trying to figure out how to build a cart for my 130 lb dog with bad hips and a bad elbow. I tried one of the premade dog strollers...to flimsy and hard to maneuver with a big dog. I tried one of the metal garden carts...it was too narrow, so it was unstable, and the wheels were too small to really effectively pull her on uneven ground. any ideas of a good place to start on designing a cart for her? I would need an easy way to get her on and off it it's too high. built-on folding ramp?

you could use a washer instead of the little square plates i cut and punched , it just wont be as thick and as strong. weld 2 or 3 thick washers together instead.

the metal sleeve resting on the threads shouldnt turn if the bearings are good and you got it tightened up enough. so i dont think the threads cant dig into it that much :)

i dont think this design is strong enough for a horse chariot . im assuming your project doesnt have to be period correct if your allowed to use modern materials . so my advice is maybe try some bolt on torsion axles like i used on my backhoe project , they would probably be safe enough depending on your design . good luck on the project .
