Crazy that we ship banana from Ecuador. We can grow them here. We could easily grow all of our own produce. Proteins/grains may be a different story. It would take a change in diet preference. Lots of ag land isn't even used for ag. Maybe force people to grow food on ag land or make them sell? That would probably solve a lot of problems, including foreign real estate speculation.

My brother does his part. He drives 50 miles to Waialua to grow apple bananas and cooking bananas for the Hawaii Asian markets. People think he’s financially crazy because he’s a medical doctor and could make way more money practicing medicine more but he makes $200 per truckload after 6 months of growing bananas. He also needs to pay for his farmland and water. It takes a special kind of crazy to be a farmer in Hawaii.

Great thoughts Chris, hope the governor sees this. I especially appreciate the support for tourism, I think you had 4 or 5 suggestions all which were spot (for tourism). There’s a lot of necessary government functions as enablers, hopefully they will focus more on them. Unfortunately the surplus is going to go to skyline rail I suspect.

I'd like to see a dividend at least discussed. I know that there are other mechanisms to help low-income families, but a dividend would go a long way since it's directly tied into tourism, at least in name.

Dr. Green needs to figure out what his legacy will be. There is no reason that we couldn't have the best schools, best infrastructure, best agricultural output, best tech hubs, best healthcare etc. Even though times have changed and our Islands have become more gentrified, I still believe in the Aloha Spirit and our Kama‘aina to move our Islands forward while respecting our culture, people and ‘āina.

I do agree about teaching financial literacy, though as you mentioned there is the issue with lowering teacher retention, so I do wonder who they could even get to teach it, and if they could teach it well enough. And I say this as someone who thinks economics in general might be worth considering as a required course. If not in high school, then in college. It's so important and prevalent in everyone's life, and with crypto on the rise and inflation continuously eating your wages/savings, I think econ is becoming increasingly important to learn. There was a Civil Beat article last year in May about the BoE finally taking a more serious look at the topic of teaching financial literacy, though it sounded like we're still a ways away from having it as grad requirement.

The one thing that I wish the State of Hawaii would do is to take the State Auditor's reports more seriously. Back in the days when I was working (I've been retired for 7 years), DAGS would audit other state departments for their business management practices. From my perspective as a middle manager in the Department of Transportation, State Auditor Marion Higa's reports summarizing weaknesses and inefficiencies were spot on. Unfortunately, no one bothered to pay more than lip service to her critiques. Oh, departments would make a big show of responding to every point ... contriving ways to justify deficiencies and promising to implement "meaningful" improvements ... but sadly nothing ever really changed. In part that was because it was in the department's best interest to protect its own image, rather than to accept criticism. In part, that was because effecting meaningful change was very difficult in the process-oriented bureaucracy.
@HelloFromHawaii
@HelloFromHawaii 10 күн бұрын
That's a great point. I'm not sure how those auditor reports are perceived, particularly if it makes the State look bad. But it's interesting stuff and maybe it just takes the media and others to highlight what are in those reports.

Actually I don’t think they should teach finance in high school because (drum roll) they kind of already do. From my understanding for my entire long life, I remember my class talking bout that financial stuff. I think it was actually in a history class(?) where our teacher tried to show us various charts of salaries and what is the estimated take home pay, expenses, interest and retirement. But at 15 years old, kind of in one ear and out the other. We also learned about interest in high school math but in one ear out the other. I even was given financial advice freshman year in college but I still couldn’t pull off the financial advice. The reason for my failure was advertisements. If we can get rid of need for students and families to keep up with the Jones then we have a fighting chance of people moving towards more financial freedom. If we cannot get rid of our desires for nice things then telling 10,000 middle class/poor public high school seniors that they should set aside $500 a month in a 401k for the next 30 years of their life is meaningless. They actually probably already heard that in high school and will hear it again in their 20’s but they’ll be like me and say, I can’t let my $500 a month disappear for 30 years and get it back later. If you can teach students to be frugal first and be vigilant against the material world then they have a fighting chance at being financially secure. Most of their struggles will be at losing in the shopping psychology game when they make credit card purchases and losing at the game of buying a car they shouldn’t have purchased. I am certain every single Hawaii high school student has been told several times that credit cards can be dangerous and don’t waste money on cars you can’t afford because cars are a horrible investment. Yet a truckload of young adults make the same mistakes over and over. They need to overcome the emotional side of their decisions which is that they don’t want to look poor. Actually, looking poor is that actual solution that would have fixed 80 percent of their troubles and they can then throw that 20 percent into their 401k then their financial problems will be truly solved.

I don't think financial literacy is an actual priority. I remember they taught us about the stock market in the context of the Roaring 20s and then the Depression, but that was it. I know that STEM gets a big push, but again, without basic financial literacy, all that STEM salary with disappear.

About 90% all produce bought and consumed in Hawaii are shipped in. Some 83% of Hawaii's ag land (873,241 acres) are dedicated to cattle pasture. In 2021, Hawaii's ranches had a total of 144,000 heads of cattle, a 1.4% increase from the previous year. And about 44k heads of cattle are shipped annually California, Texas, where they are made into burgers, BBQ, tacos, burritos. And the _Paniolos,_ dockworkers, truck drivers are happy to keep it that way -- if anything, expand the system.

I love you, but I only agree with you on teaching financial literacy in schools and agriculture. Everyone else I don't. Sorry dude, no disrespect to you man, but most of your ideas only look good on paper, but are terrible for our state. Implementation of AI would only raise our absurd electricity costs even more and overwhelm our power grid (which really needs to beef up). If anything, our state needs to lower our electricity costs by completely eliminating that dangerous all renewable energy by 2040 or 2050 bill that David "Kermit" Ige signed when he was Governor and bring back the coal plants. The Climate Change agenda is only scam/crooked infomercial to sell solar panels, windmills and electric cars made in China to make them rich and screw us over. The Tourism dividend disguised as Universal Basic Income that just makes people enslaved and dependent on the government. If you really want change in our state, lower and cut as many taxes possible, eliminate the state income/personal income tax & property taxes, work with congress to eliminate the jones act, beef up agriculture and establish manufacturing for us to grow and produce our own food and goods, make our state a business friendly state by lowering the fees to start a business and build up and establish the film/tv/entertainment industry and the cryptocurrency mining. Both complement and help strengthen the tourism industry. Again, please don't take this as disrespect or anything, just stating my opinions on what will help our state. That's all. Love your content and what you do. Really do mean that. Keep on doing you and producing content. I'll still watch and support you whether I agree with you or not.

Focus on a department example: Department of Education State Office - Curriculum, Fiscal, Technology, Human Resources, Facilities, Student Support Services, etc District Offices- Oahu - Honolulu, Windward, Leeward, Central Neighbor Islands Each district has components similar to the state office School level Support Service- Administration, Teachers and Staff Finally the “student “ @@@@@@@@@@@@ Do a Paradigm Shift! Flip the top down chart and the “Student “ is at top Support by: School District State Do the same for state offices The “Citizens “ at top! How to support citizens?
