How to Make Homemade Sledgehammer & Hatchet Handles!

Not many folks make their own handles anymore, especially when you can buy them from a hardware store for $5. But making your own is cheaper if you have the materials, resourceful, and gives you so much more satisfaction working with something you built yourself instead of something you just bought from the store!

Making handles was my Dad's winter project. He kept a piece of hickory hanging in the shop. In Kentucky,when snow was on the ground, he'd be in his unheated shop making handles for everything. I went thru a spell, around 11 or 12, where I'd break anything. Kept him and that drawknife busy! I learned how to make them too. 65 and can still do it!! Thanks,Jeff

You are helping a lota people out there . It is hard to find men these days that understand , hard work and common sense, makes the job a whole lot smother. Yet it is good entertainment to watch a feller across the way try and do some thing he hasent a clue fer. For example my neighbor the doctor, got himself a new jeep, we found him out on the hill side stuck spinning the wheels. Called him and he said he was going to call a tow truck, went over to see if I could help.he showed me all the wheels do is spin , the 2 rears , so I leaned in and flipped a toggle and said try again , he stomped the paddle to the metal and off like a heard of wild buffalo the little jeep learched up the hill and never even slipped another rear tire . Followed him to the dirt roads then showed him how to engage the 4x4. Smart guy like him and didn't know what 4x4 meant. This

Hey Jeff I agree with you 100%, I was a Millwright for 43 years in a manufacturing plant and I like to fix stuff myself and if I can repair it I don't take nothing to the shop. After getting stuck on stupid, TWICE! I attempted 2 handles for an old sledge head I have but both times I shaped the handle before the head. Like the first thing you say in this video is do the head first before you waist your time fancying up the handle. well after 2 failed attempts I went to KZbin and stumbled onto this post. After watching the video it truly is that simple and there is not much to it. thanks Jeff and I have subscribed and love your channel. I am a firm believer in don't buy it make it!

My Grandpa (and my Dad as well) taught me the value of things you make with your own hands. Most of the time it beats any store bought thing hands down. My kids and grand kids love the benches and cabinets I make for them. I still have several pieces (small tool totes and such) I made with my Granddad. I've taught my first granddaughter to hammer nails with the very hammer my Granddad taught me with. I have a great respect for your way of life and values. I just made a hatchet handle from scratch from Ash trees milled from my dad's farm I grew up on. Also, the hatchet head was my late uncle's so I agree with you.....it is about what it means to you and I learned a new skill. Thanks for sharing!

Hatchet handle end fix. Wrap the end with nylon cord (color of your choice). You can put a small loop under your wraps and tuck the end under when you are done for a neat finish. You can wrap over a bit of epoxy to make it hold solid - and you can seal the cord together when you are done with some superglue (soaking into the cord) or a bit more epoxy, to really seal it in place. (a bit like wrapping guides on a fishing rod). You can make fancy wraps for more texture or height, and use high-vis colors, etc. to really customize it. A good rainy-day project..

I'm not real talented with wood like that, but I understand the sentimental part. That's the way I am with growing things in the garden. A can of green beans from the store are probably a lot cheaper than raising and canning them myself, but the ones out of my garden just seem to taste a whole lot better. Cut scraped and sanded a short handle for a 41b sledge. Then proceeded shaping for the head end. Like you said, wrong!!! It was looking good too! Back to the drawing board. Appreciate ya brother.

i really like your video style you talk to the camera like you are talking to a friend (like you are talking to all of use personally). i know what you mean by the satisfaction of doing something the best way you can. i used to work at a large old fashioned familly owned lumberyard and filled in at the custom wood shop, we used to custom cut stair stringers, treads,i made a ton of hardwood transition strips for flooring, one of our customers was a block plant and they went thru a bunch of handles a month those guys were rough on their tools but they got the job done, i remember taking all the precut handles off the hook wall more than once to get their order done. keep up the good work and keep on doing the videos.
